Over the last 50 years, one of England's major roads has had its fair share of mysterious occurrences.
Constructed back in the 1960s, the M5 stretches 162 miles across the British countryside and connects the Midlands with South West England.

Over the years it has been linked with a number of strange events and sightings, many of which continue to remain unexplained to this day.

One such incident occurred in 2008 when a Royal Navy aircraft engineer had been driving near Weston-super-Mare when he spotted a strange object in the sky.

It hovered in the air for three minutes before disappearing.

"I work with aircraft and grew up next to Manchester Airport so I know exactly what a plane looks and sounds like," he said. "This was definitely not a plane. It was a circular disc which was glowing bright, hovering hundreds of metres up. Other people must have spotted it."Meanwhile, near West Bromwich, drivers have long reported sightings of a hooded figure that often crosses the road in front of them before mysteriously disappearing into thin air.

Some believe that the apparition is connected with the nearby Sandwell Priory.

Another ghost - this time a woman in a white dress - is also sometimes seen in the same area. There are stories of people stopping to help only to find that she, too, has disappeared.

Most disturbing of all however was the discovery in 2009 of human bones in a black bin bag by workmen who had been clearing vegetation from near Junction 14.

The remains were identified as those of Melanie Hall who had been missing since 1996.

Sadly, despite an extensive investigation, nobody has ever been charged with her murder.
