'Nessie-like' carcass found on Scottish beach

A violent storm that battered the UK this week exposed this monstrous carcass on an Aberdeen beach.
Found washed up on Balmedie Beach along Scotland's east coast, the mystery skeleton was discovered by a member of local community Facebook page Fubar News.

"Came across this weird creature today near Aberdeen," they wrote. "Any ideas what it could be?"

The image quickly generated a great number of responses including several making predictable comparisons to the Loch Ness Monster despite Loch Ness being over 100 miles away.

Some users suggested that it could be a saltwater crocodile, while others made tongue-in-cheek references to Falkor the Luck Dragon from classic 1980s fantasy movie The Neverending Story.
As it turns out however, this peculiar creature is none of these things.

According to Nick Davidson of the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme, the remains are actually those of a minke whale - a species of seaborne mammal that can grow up to 35ft in length.

It also turns out that the carcass had actually been on the beach since October and that the recent storm had merely removed the sand that was covering it.
