‘The Door is Closed’ On Sony & Marvel’s Spider-Man Deal
Tom Holland might be enthusiastic about Spider-Man’s future, but his fans are having a hard time mustering the same optimism. A very vocal group is still hoping for a speedy resolution between Sony and Marvel Studios that will allow the wallcrawler to stay in the MCU. Sony Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra is the latest to weigh in the studios’ recent split. And unfortunately, he pretty much confirmed that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up…at least for the time being.

Vinciquerra reflected on last month’s announcement while appearing at Variety’s Entertainment & Technology summit. He admitted that “for the moment, the door is closed” on renegotiating with Marvel. But he also remarked that “it’s a long life;” which sounds like another way of saying “never say never.” Additionally, he insisted that the critical and financial success of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn’t solely indebted to Marvel Studios’ involvement.

“We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies,” said Vinciquerra. “We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”

“Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well,” continued Vinciquerra. “I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”

The initial dispute reportedly stemmed from the studios reaching a stalemate over how much they both stood to profit from future standalone Spidey flicks. Sony allegedly balked at Marvel’s wish to increase their box office take from 5% to 50%. Other reports suggested that Marvel was willing to settle for 30%. But at the end of the day, none of us were in the meeting room. So all we can do is follow along with updates like these and continue to hope for the best.
