Spider-Man: Far From Home
Report: Sony May Have Pulled Spider-Man Out of the MCU
Considering that Sony’s deal with Marvel revitalized Spider-Man, it made sense to renew the pact. But only days after Spider-Man: Far From Home became Sony’s biggest hit ever, Deadline is reporting that Sony and Disney failed to come to terms for a renewal.

According to the report, Disney’s desire to co-finance future Spider-Man films and get 50% of the profits was the biggest stumbling block. Sony wasn’t willing to give up that share. Consequently, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige will have nothing to do with the next two Spider-Man movies. Tom Holland and director Jon Watts reportedly have two more films lined up with Sony. However, it’s unclear if Sony will go forward with a Far From Home sequel.

Presumably, this would allow Sony to bring Spider-Man into its own Marvel Universe films including Venom and Morbius the Living Vampire. Intriguingly, the report notes that Marvel wanted to expand its relationship with Sony to include the extended supporting characters like Venom. However, the latest developments make that outcome even more unlikely.

Sony has walked away from negotiations before, only to return to the bargaining table with Marvel. Because Venom was successful on its own, Sony may be more emboldened this time.

How do you feel about Sony and Disney failing to renew their pact? Let us know in the comment section below!

Report: Sony Believes Spider-Man Doesn’t Need the MCU Anymore

Report: Sony Believes Spider-Man Doesn’t Need the MCU Anymore
Earlier this week, the industry was rocked by the acrimonious end of Marvel/Disney’s Spider-Man pact with Sony. While Disney is said to have asked for as much as 50% of future Spider-Man movie profits, a new report may explain why Sony is willing to leave the MCU behind.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony doesn’t believe that it needs Marvel or Kevin Feige anymore. A Sony source reportedly told THR that “[Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom [Rothman] is thinking ‘Okay, we’ve learned everything we need to from Kevin’s playbook. We did Venom on our own and we did Spider-Verse.’”

If Venom hadn’t proven to be so successful at the box office, Sony probably wouldn’t have felt so emboldened. The animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, also went a long way towards Sony’s rehabilitation of its Spider-Man image.

RELATED: Jon Watts Isn’t Signed For Spider-Man Sequels
But few would argue that the deal to share Spider-Man paid dividends for both Marvel and Sony. Spidey’s entrance into the MCU allowed the company’s biggest hero to be a part of three blockbuster films. Sony’s two solo Spidey films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, went on to become mega hits of their own. Last weekend, Far From Home became Sony’s highest grossing film of all time.

There may still be a slim possibility that Sony and Marvel/Disney can return to the bargaining table. A few Marvel actors are already advocating for that. But in the interim, Spidey’s future is firmly back in Sony’s control.

Do you think that Sony doesn’t need the MCU anymore? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Stan Lee’s Daughter Takes Sony’s Side in Spider-Man Dispute with Disney

Stan Lee’s Daughter Takes Sony’s Side in Spider-Man Dispute with Disney
A new Marvel Civil War has reportedly started in recent days, and it sees Sony facing Disney/Marvel over Spider-Man‘s rights. More and more people are siding with one or the other, but now a very important player has taken the field. In a recent interview with TMZ, Joan Celia (JC) Lee revealed her dislike towards how Disney and Marvel Studios are handling his father’s legacy, the late Stan Lee.

“Marvel and Disney seeking total control of my father’s creations must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy,” Lee said. “Whether it’s Sony or someone else’s, the continued evolution of Stan’s characters and his legacy deserves multiple points of view. When my father died, no one from Marvel or Disney reached out to me.”

Then Stan Lee’s daughter took another hard shot at Marvel and Disney’s executives.

“From day one, they have commoditized my father’s work and never shown him or his legacy any respect or decency,” she added. “In the end, no one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney’s executives.”

Lee’s words came as a surprise because they revealed a serious fracture between Stan Lee’s family and Disney/Marvel executives. We don’t know if there were some things behind the scenes which caused the escalation of this situation. However, Stan Lee’s popularity has thrived anew among the youngest Marvel fans thanks to the work of Marvel Studios and Disney.

Do you think that Stan Lee’s daughter is right in accusing Disney and Marvel? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Jon Watts Still Hasn’t Signed On to Direct Additional Spider-Man Films

Jon Watts Still Hasn’t Signed On to Direct Additional Spider-Man Films
Yesterday, word broke that Sony would no longer share Spider-Man’s film rights with Marvel. Some outlets have reported that the studios are still negotiating. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the issue is getting resolved anytime soon. A few fans managed to take comfort in the news that star Tom Holland and director Jon Watts were still contracted for two more Spidey films. However, it turns out that this might only be half true.

According to Deadline it’s an “open question” whether Watts will return to the director’s chair for the two films Sony is planning. Deadline also notes that he’s currently “being heavily courted” for other directing gigs, so this might affect his choice to helm a third installment, even after Spider-Man: Far From Home just became the biggest earner in the studio’s history. Although Deadline doesn’t mention this, the standoff between Disney and Sony could potentially factor for Watts as well.

RELATED: Report: Sony May Have Pulled Spider-Man Out of the MCU
After social media users spent hours lamenting the news, Sony finally posted an official statement to its official Twitter account. The studio implied that Kevin Feige’s workload with other MCU projects is keeping him from overseeing any new films featuring the webslinger. Not surprisingly, this only seemed to infuriate fans even more.

If Watts doesn’t return, that will probably increase the backlash against Sony. After all, Watts’ touch of John Hughes-inspired high school melodrama helped make the Spider-Man series feel fresh again. This obviously wasn’t an easy feat, since Spider-Man: Homecoming marked the character’s third cinematic iteration in 15 years.

Should Jon Watts return to direct another Spider-Man movie even if it’s not set in the MCU? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!

Jeremy Renner and Ryan Reynolds Sound Off On Spider-Man’s MCU Exit

Jeremy Renner and Ryan Reynolds Sound Off On Spider-Man’s MCU Exit
Fans have voiced their displeasure over Sony and Disney’s inability to reach a deal to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But they aren’t the only ones that are upset with his exit.

Just hours after Sony expressed their “disappointment” in Disney not being able to make an agreement, Jeremy Renner and Ryan Reynolds weighed in as well.

Renner has played Hawkeye in the MCU films since in Thor way back in 2011. He recently posted on his Instagram account, with a picture from Avengers: Endgame. He begged for Sony to reconsider their decision and give Spider-Man back to Marvel.

A post shared by Jeremy Renner (@renner4real) on Aug 20, 2019 at 7:16pm PDT

Reynolds, who has become synonymous with his title role in Deadpool had something to say as well. When asked about his dream of a Deadpool/Spider-Man crossover film, he left the following response.

You can. But you can only see it in my heart.

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) August 20, 2019

Sony did note that they hope Disney’s decision “might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given (Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige) – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.” Of course, that’s total BS and disingenuous. It’s not Feige’s schedule that’s keeping him from returning, it’s Sony and Disney’s inability to make a deal.

RELATED: Jon Watts Isn’t Signed For Additional Spider-Man Films
Where Spider-Man goes from here is unknown. Sony does have Tom Holland – who hasn’t said anything on the matter – signed for two more Spider-Man movies. However, Sony haven’t announced its future plans at the moment.

For the time being, Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters, and an extended cut is set to debut on August 27.

Why Spider-Man’s future in the MCU isn’t as bleak as it seems
Sony and Marvel both benefit greatly from keeping Spider-Man in the MCU. Both studios know this.

Toward the end of Avengers: Endgame, Hawkeye is running with the Infinity Gauntlet, and asks Captain America what to do with it. To save the universe, they and their fellow Avengers need to get the Infinity Stones it holds to a safe place. But standing in their way is an army led by Thanos’s most fearsome generals, as well as Thanos himself.

Seeing as Hawkeye can’t get past all those foes on his own, the Avengers orchestrate a plan on the fly, passing the Gauntlet among themselves like relay racers headed to the finish line.

It just so happens that those who take a turn carrying the Gauntlet are all part of the next generation of Marvel’s flagship heroes. Black Panther takes it first, then hands it off to Spider-Man, a.k.a. Peter Parker. Next, as Thanos’s goons bear down on them, Captain Marvel comes in with the assist.

For fans, this scene is not just about defeating Thanos — it’s a literal handoff, as Marvel signals that Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Captain Marvel are ready to save the day and rule the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor did before them.

But this week, that symbolic passing of the torch hit a snag.

On August 20, news broke through anonymous sources that a deal between Sony and Marvel and gone sour. Because Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man even though the character originated at Marvel Comics, the two studios’ recent partnership is the only reason that Spider-Man joined the MCU. But news reports suggested they’d hit an impasse while discussing the future of their Spider-Man agreement, with both sides ultimately walking away. The result: Spider-Man won’t appear in any Marvel films going forward.

The news throws both the future of Spider-Man and that of the MCU into disarray. Each side has its grievances and complaints, and fans are right to be concerned. But there is also a case for hope. Here’s why both sides may eventually find a way to let Peter Parker keep hanging out with his MCU pals.

The news of Spidey’s MCU demise is likely about negotiation and brinkmanship
An important thing to keep in mind: The entire story of the failed deal is probably part of a strategic play by Marvel or Sony, or even both studios, to gain an advantage in negotiations. Leaking this kind of news riles up fans who have taken a liking to the MCU iteration of Spider-Man and actor Tom Holland’s portrayal of him, and whose interest has led to positive audience reviews and huge box office hauls for 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Both of those solo Spidey films were set in the MCU and co-produced by Sony and Marvel, and outraged fan reaction to the idea that there won’t be any more of them puts pressure on both sides. Perhaps Marvel and its corporate parent, Disney, will have to accept less than the 50-50 co-financing stake they reportedly want. Perhaps Sony will have to budge a little and offer Marvel more than the estimated 5 percent of its gross revenue it is currently said to be sharing. All in the name of keeping Spider-Man in the MCU.

Sony has responded to news reports of its clash with Disney/Marvel not by actively addressing the issue of money and Marvel’s plea for a co-financing deal, but rather by focusing on Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and placing the blame on Disney:

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film,” a Sony spokesperson said in an official statement obtained by the Hollywood Reporter.

“We hope this might change in the future,” the statement continued, “but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him — including all their newly added Marvel properties — do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

Sony’s attempt to change the subject to Feige’s busy schedule of upcoming Marvel projects could indicate that it was a Disney source who leaked the news of stalled negotiations and framed Sony as selfish in the process. By publicly assigning blame to Disney, Sony is effectively signaling to Spider-Man fans that it wants Spider-Man to remain in the MCU but Disney won’t cooperate.

Meanwhile, anonymous sources speaking to the Hollywood Reporter have created a narrative that Sony believes it “doesn’t need ‘Kevin’s Playbook’ anymore” and that Disney has historically taken the higher road when it comes to financial opportunities concerning Spider-Man.

“Just getting Spider-Man in even one of their movies at the time, that was a stem cell infusion for Marvel,” one of the anonymous sources said.

Another source who was cited as a Sony insider added, “Tom [Rothman, Sony’s film head] is thinking ‘Okay, we’ve learned everything we need to from Kevin’s playbook. We did Venom on our own and we did Spider-Verse.’”

Disney hasn’t officially commented. But realistically, it’s hard to believe that either Disney/Marvel or Sony would proceed with Spider-Man not staying part of the MCU.

Aside from Captain America and Pepper Potts, there is no character with a greater attachment to Tony Stark than Spider-Man, and by virtue of that relationship, Marvel has appointed Spider-Man to carry on Tony’s legacy. Marvel would have to rethink and completely reshape its future movies if Spider-Man can’t be in them.

And Sony can’t deny that it has benefited greatly from the Avengers raising Spider-Man’s profile.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is now Sony’s biggest movie to date (having earned $1.1 billion worldwide). It was considered to be the final chapter in Marvel’s Phase 3 set of movies. And star Tom Holland has publicly lauded and gushed over the chance to work with Marvel and be part of the MCU (Holland also appears to be among those who are unhappy with Sony in particular, as he reportedly unfollowed the studio on Instagram after news of its Spidey spat broke).

Losing its Avengers connection — Far From Home included elements and storylines introduced in Endgame — certainly won’t help the Spider-Man franchise. And whispers of a sad or frustrated Holland won’t be something Sony wants to deal with whenever a new Spider-Man movie comes out.

So it’s not in either studio’s best interest to let this deal fall through.

How Spider-Man and the X-Men fit into Marvel’s future
Sony’s statement about Kevin Feige’s workload gets at a question that’s been on fans’ minds since 2017. And the question could come up at Marvel’s forthcoming presentation during this weekend’s D23 Expo: When is Marvel going to start using the X-Men and Fantastic Four in its movies?

For superhero fans, the big exclamation point on Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox’s entertainment assets (which was set into motion in 2017 and finalized in 2019) was that Marvel would finally have the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four back in its catalog. (Marvel sold the film rights to those characters, along with the film rights to Spider-Man, after filing for bankruptcy in 1996.) And at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Feige confirmed that the mutants would be incorporated into the MCU.

Now eyes are on D23, and whether or not Feige will announce dates for any X-Men movies. Here’s Marvel’s confirmed movie schedule so far, which covers the studio’s plans until 2021:

May 1, 2020 — Black Widow
November 6, 2020 — The Eternals
February 12, 2021 — Shang Chi
May 7, 2021 — Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
November 5, 2021 — Thor: Love and Thunder
At some point, there will also be dates for the studio’s Black Panther and Captain Marvel sequels, as well as the third installments of Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. Add to that Blade (which was a surprise announcement at Comic-Con), and at least one Avengers-esque team-up movie peppered in somewhere.

As of this writing, if Marvel continues its recent pace of putting out two to three movies per year, its schedule is spoken for until around 2024, even if we don’t yet know its planned release dates. And, going back 2014, when Marvel announced its five-year film slate up until 2019, it’s conceivable that Marvel will reveal its 2022, 2023, and possibly 2024, schedule at D23. A surprise announcement that the X-Men or Fantastic Four are on the docket for 2024 or 2025 (an even bigger surprise would be seeing them earlier) could cap off the presentation.

As Sony justifiably points out, that’s a lot of projects for Feige to potentially be working on.

But there’s also historical evidence (perhaps to Sony’s chagrin) that Marvel values Spider-Man more than almost any other property it has. Not long after Marvel announced its five-year schedule of movies in 2014, Marvel and Sony announced their Spider-Man partnership in February 2015. Marvel then delayed the releases of Black Panther and Captain Marvel to open up space for Spider-Man: Homecoming, because of the name recognition of the character and Spidey’s importance to the story it would eventually tell.

Going by the two-year window between the first two Spider-Man movies, the next one should be due in 2021, possibly around the Fourth of July, like Far From Home — a spot that no Marvel Studios movie is slated to occupy (the studio tends to release its films earlier or later in the year, and all its current dates fall in February, May, or November).

But even if July 2021 won’t work for some reason, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for Marvel to reschedule Shang-Chi, the way it did with Black Panther or Captain Marvel, should a new deal with Sony come to fruition. And despite the anonymous reports and tales of impending demise, it’s a deal that Sony, Marvel, and of course Spider-Man fans, want to see.

Weekend Watch – Exploring The Ramifications Of Spider-Man Leaving The MCU
Welcome to Weekend Watch, a recurring feature where we highlight some of the best geek-related videos around the web. Whether it’s short films, behind-the-scenes clips, video essays, or top 10 countdowns, the only requirement is that they are about our favorite geeky topics!

In this edition of Weekend Watch, we’re exploring the ramifications of perhaps the year’s biggest news story – Spider-Man’s exit from the MCU. According to a bombshell report, financial negotiations between Sony and Disney have led to a stalemate. If this turns out to be accurate, Marvel will unfortunately no longer be creatively involved with the Spider-Man movies. There’s a lot to unpack here. If you’re looking for some context on the first 2015 deal to share Spider-Man, make sure to check out our retrospective on Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Starting things off, we have a video that examines the original report in-depth. Afterward, we’ll take a look at some of the twitter reactions to the news as it broke. Then, we feature a discussion that digs deeper into the nuts and bolts of the deal to try and figure out who is to blame for negotiations falling apart. After that, we have a video that explores the best and worst-case scenarios of this outcome. Next, we have a video essay that asks an intriguing question – can Spider-Man survive without Marvel? Finally, we close things out with a video that highlights the storylines that might be ruined if a new deal cannot be reached.

Sony Pulls Spider-Man Out of the MCU?

First up, we have a video from Midnight’s Edge that explores exactly happened between Sony and Disney. While this video seems convinced that the original report contains a “slant” toward Sony, it gives an excellent summary. It explores the break-up between Sony and Disney, along with what might come next. There’s not much new information about the situation in this video. However, it offers a helpful primer for those who are unfamiliar with the situation as it stands.

Twitter Reacts To Spider-Man Leaving the MCU

Our next video, which comes via Looper, rounds up some of the best twitter reactions to the news that Spider-Man might be leaving the MCU. When the news first broke, the Internet did what it does best with a massive story like this – react. Naturally, people drew their pitchforks toward Sony. But it’s not that simple.

Spider-Man Leaves the MCU – Who Is To Blame?

Next, this video from Collider Live features a healthy discussion about the overall ramifications of the Spider-Man deal falling apart. While the original report is covered here, the panelists also discuss who is actually to blame for negotiations coming to an end. Although it’s easy to blame Sony for this decision, Disney is also equally responsible for this mess. However, the more interesting question here is trying to uncover who leaked the story in the first place?

Spider-Man Leaving The MCU: The Best And Worst-Case Scenarios

This video, via Screen Crush, explores the best and worst-case scenarios for how this situation might unfold. On the positive side, the lack of Spider-Man’s presence might allow for new characters to take prominence in the MCU. It could also allow the filmmakers to tell a Spider-Man story where world-building isn’t the main priority. Obviously, the big drawback is that Sony is once again in control of the creative direction of the franchise. There’s natural skepticism about how the studio has handled the franchise in the past; which further emphasizes that Sony doesn’t know what makes the character appealing. This video does a great job of exploring the ramifications of this news, for better or worse.

Can Spider-Man Survive Without Marvel?

Assuming that no deal can be reached, this video from Captain Midnight explores an interesting question: can Spider-Man survive without Marvel? Since starting their partnership with Disney, Sony has gained a tremendous amount of goodwill from Peter’s inclusion in the MCU. Instead of jumping on the “let’s bash Sony” train, it offers a more optimistic approach to this scenario. Namely, if Spidey is indeed out of the MCU, where should the creative direction of the character be taken next? While this would undoubtedly be difficult, there are ways for Sony to continue this specific storyline. Ultimately, the studio needs to take some bold creative risks to make their version of Spidey stand out once again.

These Spider-Man Storylines Will Ruined By Leaving The MCU

Finally, this video from ScreenRant looks at all of the issues that Marvel will face without Spidey in the MCU moving forward. Considering that Far From Home positioned Peter as the new lynchpin of the MCU, this news will drastically change Marvel’s plans. Feige and company were undoubtedly planning future team-ups with Spidey. Those plans fall apart without Spider-Man. Marvel’s creative team will probably be able to write themselves out of this corer, but it’s tough.

What are your thoughts on the ramifications of this massive news? Make sure to let us know in the comment section below!
