The Trench Producer Wants to “Lean Into the Horror”
Brace yourselves. Next year, the DC Extended Universe could get even darker than it already is. Longtime horror movie director and producer James Wan has every intention to scare the hell out of the fans in the upcoming Aquaman spin-off The Trench. Speaking with ComicBook, Wan revealed that he will play hard with the “monster horror movie” card at the expense of the “superhero” one.

“We, you know, we’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much,” said Wan. “But definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film. But it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.”

The Trench — which is the canonical name of both the species and their place of origin — are the perfect subject for a monster horror movie. Since their first appearance in Aquaman vol. 7 #1, we’ve seen them killing, eating, and destroying people. Additionally, their carnivorous piscine humanoid appearance makes them look really dangerous and threatening.

From directing the first Saw ever to producing the recent The Curse of La Llorona, Wan has always delivered a more than satisfying take on his scariest projects. The first horror movie ever in the DCEU seems to be in the right hands.

Recently, Aquaman producer Peter Safran stated that they are taking “a page from our Conjuring playbook” for the upcoming The Trench. Their clear intention is to expand the Atlantean universe as they did with the Conjuring universe.
