‘Avengers’ Editors Cut ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ From 900 Hours of Footage: ‘Absolutely Hellish’

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Avengers: Endgame.”]

Making “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” was a mammoth task for directors Anthony and Joe Russo, but it was even more of a massive undertaking for editors Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt. The two editors spent two years editing the Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpoles back to back, and they recently revealed to Business Insider that in order to pull off both films they had to figure out what to do with 900 hours of shot footage.

“It was a massive amount of footage with three, sometimes four units working every day pumping out material,” Ford said. “And I’m not even including the motion-capture footage. But if you do a bit at a time you can get through it.”

In order to get both films done, the editing duo had to split up the duties on “Infinity War” and “Endgame.” The Russo brothers shot both movies back to back and the editing team cut together as much as possible in real time. While Ford was editing together “Infinity War” and overseeing the final stages of post-production, Schmidt assembled the first cut of “Endgame” while it was being filmed.

“We showed them a version of ‘Endgame’ [within] about a week, week-and-a-half of principal photography being done,” Schmidt said.

“We were cutting every day, we were refining, we were figuring out what we were going to reshoot, figuring out what we had to finish,” Ford said about the process. “It was a constant state of preproduction, production, and post-production all at the same time for almost a year straight. And then when we finished that year of insanity, we went right into an absolutely hellish, almost impossible post production period that lasted from January to April when we delivered ‘Infinity War,’ and that was one of the most intense periods of filmmaking I ever experienced, and I have worked on some crazy movies.”

Ford and Schmidt also revealed some parts of “Endgame” that changed in the editing room. One of the big decisions the editors were involved in was figuring out where the Avengers show up during the Battle of New York when they travel back in time. Ford said they played with having the superheroes arrive in the past when Hulk grabs Loki and smashes him around. A different entry point was written into the script.

“The script had us showing up right when Tony flies through the Leviathan and blows it up from the inside,” Ford said. “But when we screened it for audiences in test screenings we realized it took a few minutes for them to acclimate themselves. It wasn’t landing the way we wanted. So we tried other versions.”

Ultimately the iconic shot from “The Avengers” of the main superheroes preparing for battle as the camera rotates in a circle around them won out. “It was the cleanest and most epic transition back into ‘Avengers 1,'” Ford said.

“Avengers: Endgame” is now playing in theaters nationwide

Chris Hemsworth Had to Fight to Keep Fat Thor Throughout Avengers: Endgame
One of the more surprising aspects of Avengers: Endgame was Thor’s transformation from muscular behemoth to, as one of the character’s in the film put it, “melted ice cream” — a result of his mental breakdown after his failure to take down Thanos. Even more surprising, actor Chris Hemsworth had to fight to keep Thor in this new Lebowski-esque situation throughout the duration of the film.

“I enjoyed that version of Thor,” Hemsworth told Variety (via JoBlo). “It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own.”

The actor explained the original plan, as outlined in the script, was to have Thor revert back to his normal muscular self. But Hemsworth felt that would cheapen “Fat Thor.” He states, “We didn’t go, like, ‘Let’s chunk him up, it’ll be hilarious.’ And we leave him in that state at the end of the movie. Even though he’s emotionally resolved … We fix his problem, and it’s not his weight. I know some people are sensitive about some of the humor that comes from it, which I understand. But our issue that we wanted him to deal with was his emotional state that his mom addresses. And I think he is the ideal Thor at the end of the movie, and he’s carrying some weight.”

Thor’s resolution at Avengers: Endgame’s finale is one of the more intriguing character beats. We hope to explore it more once Marvel kicks off its next phase. Who knows where this character will end up?

Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all. He snapped his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Katherine Langford and Josh Brolin.

Endgame Creative Team Talks Alternate Fates for the Avengers
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!

Avengers: Endgame lived up to its name and gave a few of its heroes a definitive ending. However, things could have played out differently. While speaking with Empire, the Endgame creative team shared a few alternate fates for the characters.

According to co-screenwriter Christopher Markus, “Marvel as a whole said, ‘We think it might be a time [for Tony to die], but if you have a good reason not to do it, feel free – we’ll do whatever.’ But it really did seem like, particularly with what Tony experiences after the five year break – that he has gotten married, had a kid, and is living a very healthy, peaceful life for once, and he’s had five full years of no surprises – that there wasn’t anywhere left that he needed to go.”

This was a guy who had made his full journey, all the way to the end, had experienced a full rehabilitation of his character from being the ****…at the beginning of the first Iron Man. To have him make the sacrifice that Steve Rogers would have made had he had the opportunity at that moment, just felt really right.”

But with all this focus on Iron Man biting the dust, some fans were wondering…why not Captain America? There’s a simple reason for Cap’s survival, according to co-director Joe Russo.

“Once you kill a beloved character like [Tony], you’ve got to have hope at the end of the movie in some regard, and the only person to give you that hope is the other co-lead,” noted Russo. “Had we killed both the leads, I feel like people would have been walking out into traffic after the film. The intention is not to destroy people, it’s to hopefully tell a complex and dimensionalized story in a way, that makes them feel a varied range of emotion.”

You can read up on all of the additional details here.

What do you think about the idea of Tony making the sacrificial play for the Avengers in Endgame? Let us know in the comments below!
