Disney reinstates James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3
Deadline is reporting that Disney has reinstated James Gunn as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

The outlet says that Walt Disney Studios president Horn met with the filmmaker multiple times to discuss the controversy over Gunn’s firing last July. Horn reversed the decision after being persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and how he handled the situation. Even though Gunn signed on to write and direct the Suicide Squad sequel for Warner Bros. and DC, Marvel Studios apparently never considered another director to helm Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The studio plans to move forward with the third installment in the trilogy once The Suicide Squad is complete.

Back in July, Walt Disney Studios dismissed Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to Gunn’s past controversial tweets. Despite this, the Guardians of the Galaxy‘s main cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Bautista, who all still supported him and asked for Disney to reinstate Gunn as the film’s director.

Early in 2018, director James Gunn revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be released in 2020. Filming was scheduled to start this Fall in Atlanta, but will likely be delayed until after The Suicide Squad is finished with production. The third Guardians film is meant to be the final outing for the original team lineup, setting up future films in the cosmic arena of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

James Gunn Reacts To His Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Return
As noted earlier today, Disney and Marvel Studios have rehired James Gunn to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was fired from the film last July over lewd tweets he posted several years ago. Subsequently, Gunn took a long break from social media. However, in the wake of this latest announcement, Gunn broke his eight-month silence to thank fans for their support.

Gunn’s old tweets were unearthed last summer by two far-right personalities in retribution for Gunn’s criticism of the current President. Before taking his sabbatical from Twitter, Gunn accepted the studio’s verdict and apologized for his remarks. Moreover, he acknowledged that his tweets were jokes made in poor taste and insisted they didn’t reflect his actual views. Deadline’s report indicated that Gunn’s apology played a big role in Disney’s decision to bring him back for Guardians 3.

Gunn’s firing prompted several fans and celebrities to lash out at Disney and Marvel. The Guardians themselves–Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper–famously penned an open letter to the studio asking them to reconsider their position. None of the actors have commented on Gunn’s return yet. But given their fierce loyalty, it’s only a matter of time before they chime in with a response.

Despite his dismissal, Gunn had no problem finding a new gig afterwards. Warner Bros. quickly hired him to write and direct their The Suicide Squad sequel/reboot, which starts filming later this year. Gunn will return to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once that movie wraps production.

James Gunn rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Published By Tribute on Mar 15, 2019

James Gunn at DisneylandIn what is surely a surprising, but welcome bit of news, Disney has decided to go back on its decision to fire writer/director James Gunn. According to Deadline.com, which confirmed the news with both Marvel and Gunn's camp, Disney has rehired the director for the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

James Gunn was fired by Walt Disney last July after reports brought to light several of his less tasteful tweets, dated a decade ago. The decision to reinstate the director had apparently been mulled over and decided on months ago before today's announcement.

Disney's change of heart came as a result of meetings between Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn and Gunn. Horn was reportedly impressed with how Gunn had handled the situation, showing remorse for his past actions, and the manner in which he issued his apology.

Gunn never shied away from taking responsibility for his past "jokes" on social media, but instead emphasized how he has changed since then.

The surfacing of his old tweets and missives was also revealed to be a form of payback against the director for his vocal criticism of President Donald Trump, with many of the initial outlets that had reported the tweets leaning towards the right.

Gunn's return to Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was made a bit complicated by his being hired for Warner Bros./DC's Suicide Squad 2, on which he is serving as both writer and director. However, Disney and Marvel have decided to move ahead with production for Guardians 3 after Gunn has completed work on Suicide Squad 2.

It is also being reported that the decision to rehire Gunn was made easier by virtue that Marvel hadn't seriously looked into replacing him with another director, due to the fact that they were still using the script he had submitted prior to his firing.

Directors such as Taika Waititi and Edgar Wright had taken themselves out of the running and even reiterated their standing that Disney should rehire Gunn. Amongst the cast, none was more ardent a defender of the director than Dave Bautista, who must be the most elated after hearing this news.

With Marvel currently focused on the upcoming release of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, their upcoming road map is a bit more clear. With sequels to Black Panther and Captain Marvel being surefire projects, the only other films known to be actively in the works are Shang-Chi, which will see Marvel introduce its first Asian lead, as well as The Eternals, which will feature the first openly gay lead in the MCU. ~Paolo Maquiraya
