Kevin Feige Explains Captain Marvel’s Lack of a Love Story

Kevin Feige Explains Captain Marvel’s Lack of a Love Story
To paraphrase Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker in the original Spider-Man movie, any story worth telling is about a girl. However, in most superhero flicks, the girl is usually just the heroe’s love interest. Captain Marvel is poised to flip that convention by leaving out the traditional love story. Via ComicBook.com, Marvel’s Kevin Feige explained why Captain Marvel moved away from the familiar trope.

“It was always the story,” said Feige. “I don’t remember ever having a conversation saying, ‘There will not be a love interest.’ There was only a conversation, ‘We’re telling Carol Danvers’ origin story.’ And this was her origin story, and her origin story was focused on her growth and the female friends and mentors and inspirations around her.”

Instead of a romantic subplot, Captain Marvel places emphasis on Carol’s platonic relationships with Maria Rambeau and Nick Fury. The choice seems to have paid off. A number of early reviews have praised Brie Larson’s interplay with both Lashana Lynch and Samuel L. Jackson. But according to Feige, another character from Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel comic book series that almost made it into the film as well.

“There [were] a lot of discussions about Helen Cobb and bringing her in somehow,” revealed Feige. Helen Cobb was a fighter pilot in the comics who inspired Carol to join the Air Force. Although Helen didn’t appear the final script, Feige insists this didn’t hurt the movie.

“Ultimately, the story is about Carol Danvers, so everything had to focus and funnel through her,” said Feige.
