Netflix is Developing a Resident Evil Series
Nearly two years ago, Constantin Films announced plans to develop a reboot of their Resident Evil franchise with James Wan on board as a producer. Johannes Roberts signed on to write and direct that film last month. But now, it looks like the studio is planning to adapt Capcom’s popular video game series for a different medium. Via Deadline, Constantin is working on a new Resident Evil TV series for Netflix.

Deadline indicates that the studio is currently searching for a showrunner to bring the series to fruition. Apparently, their goal is to “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the mythology.” The new series will shed light on the “inner workings” of the Umbrella Corporation, the corrupt pharmaceutical company that unleashed the T-virus on the world and turned countless humans into zombies.

It’s not clear how the series will affect Roberts’ film reboot or if the two projects will be set in the same universe. Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first six Resident Evil films, which starred Milla Jovovich as Alice from 2002 until 2016. Although her character was created specifically for the films, Alice interacted with a several familiar faces from the video games. In her travels, Alice encountered Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and the Redfield siblings. The movies earned over $1 billion at the box office. Because of this, it became the most successful film franchise based on a video game property.

Meanwhile, the video games are still going strong. Capcom’s high-definition remake of Resident Evil 2 is hitting PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows on Friday. The revamped game is currently earning top marks from critics.
