SHEBOYGAN - Andrea Mullens of Sheboygan was charged with four felonies on Monday related to the overdose death of 30-year-old Matthew Mercure, whose body was found in a crawlspace last month.

Mullens, 29, was charged with felonies for maintaining a drug trafficking place, hiding a corpse, theft from a corpse and bail jumping. She was also charged with a misdemeanor for intent to contribute to the delinquency of a child.

According to the complaint, an officer from the Sheboygan Police Department was dispatched to the 1300 block of Michigan Avenue for a welfare complaint on Nov. 18. There, relatives of Mullens told the officer that they were concerned that someone had overdosed in the upstairs apartment where Mullens lived. The officer searched the residence but found nothing suspicious.

On Nov. 20, the Sheboygan Police Department was contacted again by an adult male who claimed that Mullens had wrapped Mercure's body in a blanket and hidden it in a closet. He also alleged that Mullens had plans to move the body again.

Officer Alexander Jaeger was dispatched to the home, where Mullens' father told him that he'd kicked his daughter out of the house several days prior. Jaeger proceeded to search the empty apartment, which he noted was cold to the point that his nose ran.

Jaeger moved a plastic shelving unit in the kitchen area to reveal a door in the paneling. Through the door, Jaeger entered a crawlspace where he found Mercure's body wrapped in fabric.

The complaint states that, according to a witness, Mercure arrived at Mullens' apartment on the morning of Nov. 17. After using heroin, Mercure appeared to fall asleep. When Mullens realized that Mercure wasn't breathing, she asked for Narcan. She administered it to Mercure, before beginning CPR. The witness said Mercure appeared to be revived, before Mullens injected drugs into his arm again.

After that, the witness said, Mullens tried repeatedly to contact her father. When she was unable to get in touch with him, she pulled out two pairs of latex gloves, giving one to the witness. Mullens had removed Mercure's clothes while administering CPR, so she began putting them back on. Next, the witness said, she hid Mercure's photo ID and debit card, before wrapping him in a blanket.

The witness said he helped Mullens move the body to the crawlspace, even though he didn't want to, because he was afraid that Mullens may try to inject him with the same syringe. After they moved the body, the witness said Mullens gave him Xanax.

According to the witness, Mullens' apartment was known as "the shop," because drugs including heroin, methamphetamine and Xanax were often available there. Another witness confirmed this, saying: "That house was my downfall."

On the date of Mercure's death, Mullens was out on bond related to another Sheboygan County case, in which she was charged with recklessly endangering safety and felony bail jumping.

On Dec. 3, Mullens' bond was set for $100,000. Her preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
