Margot Robbie Explains How Birds of Prey’s Title Reflects the Tone
The DC Extended Universe’s newest project, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is moving forward with its admittedly bizarre title. That name seems to hint at a more comedic story, but it’s not the only movie with a larger-than-expected name.Via Heroic Hollywood, Margot Robbie appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the film. While there, she offered her insight about the name, and the influence of her character, Harley Quinn.

When Fallon shared Robbie’s Instagram post revealing the title, Robbie said that the name ties into the film’s tone. According to her, it also represents the inherent humor of the story.

“It’s not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that. Like Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious, and that’s [the subtitle] kind of like Harley adding her ‘Hey, don’t worry, I’m in this, too.”

Despite the humor, Birds of Prey is still a follow up to Suicide Squad. It will obviously have plenty of humor with Harley Quinn in tow, but the story will also introduce new characters to the DCEU. Cassandra Cain and Black Mask may explore several darker elements. That said, it will be good to see balance in the script. Suicide Squad earned its scorn for it’s uneven tone. Hopefully, Birds of Prey will be able to flexibly shift between the drama and comedy.

Birds of Prey stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. They’re joined by Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and newcomer Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) hits theaters on February 7, 2020.
