17 Publishers Accepting Dark Fiction and Horror - No Agent Required

"First dates can be so awkward" (Wikimedia)
Here are seventeen publishers accepting dark fiction, horror, urban fantasy, military horror, and anything that goes bump in the night - including vampires. None require an agent, and all are traditional publishers.

Some of these publishers have been in business for a long time and have a great track record. Others are start-ups. Read their websites, look at the covers of the books they publish (do you like the art?), check out their authors on Amazon - in short, investigate before you submit your work. And be sure to read submission requirements carefully and follow them to the letter.

You can find additional speculative fiction publishers (including some horror) here: Publishers Accepting Unagented Manuscripts. All of these are traditional publishers. (No vanity presses.)

4 Horror and Dark Fiction Publishers Accepting Unagented Manuscripts

Please read all submission guidelines carefully.

32 Publishers Open to Horror Novel(la) Submissions
Posted on March 16, 2017 by MJENNINGS 6 Comments

So I realize I’ve neglected my blog quite a bit, and I’ve been a lousy responder to everyone else. I apologize for that. I’ve a free week coming up, and while I’ve tons to grade, I will devote some time to being a thoughtful blogger in the community. It’s work, primarily, that sucks my days dry, leaving me with little to no creative energy to write, let alone read, for pleasure. When I can though, I’ve been pouring what’s left of me into a horror novel, my very first. I’ve had the idea for over a year now. I just felt like trying something different. Anyway, my book is far from completed, but even still, I research the markets for open submissions because that’s what we do in academia, research. While these open submissions may be subject to change by the time I’m finished writing and editing my own horror novel, I decided to compile my findings for any horror novelists out there who may be reading my little blog here.

(Oh, a couple of things: These particular publishers accept unagented submissions, too, which is nice and all. Also, keep in mind that submission periods open and close, open and close, open and close, you get the picture. Biggest piece of advice I can give is to Have Plenty of Patience. These things take a LOT of time.)

Fantasy and Science Fiction Publishers Who Accept Unsolicited Manuscripts – 2018
Writing Resources.24 comments
Hey there! I know many of my readers aspire to publishing a novel, and many of them write fantasy and science fiction, so I put this post together to help them. I did a post like this a couple of years back, but it needed updating!

Many publishing houses won’t accept submissions except through agents. If an author’s hoping for a big book deal, it probably makes sense to try to find an agent first. (And don’t submit to publishers while you’re looking for an agent. If someone is considering representing you, it’s going to be awkward to explain to them that four publishers have already turned you down.) Signing with a great agent can feel like winning the lottery, but even then, it can be a long road to the contract of your dreams.

But what if you haven’t been able to find an agent? Or you suspect what you’re writing is a little weirder or more niche than what agents are looking for, or if you’re just in a hurry?

Here’s a roundup of publishers who accept unsolicited manuscripts. Most of them are smaller houses, but a few are pretty big names. I’m including publishing houses that have open calls now and again, even if they’re not open to unagented submissions at the moment.

I haven’t done extensive research on these houses, so you should do that yourself before signing anything with them. If you know of a reason I should not include a publisher on this list, or if you believe I should add a publisher, please notify me via a private message at bryndonovan@bryndonovan.com.

The name of each publisher below is a live link to their submission guidelines. If a publisher isn’t asking for your type of work, don’t bother submitting. For instance, if they say they want novels of 80,000 words or more, don’t send them your 20,000-word novella. It’s a waste of their time and yours…and a writer’s time is precious!

If you’ve got what they are looking for, follow the submission guidelines exactly! This will set you apart from about half of the submissions right out of the gate.

Angry Robot
Although they don’t take unagented submissions most of the time, I’m putting them on the list because they had “open door” periods for novels in 2016 and 2017. Keep them on your radar!

Aqueduct Press
If you write feminist science fiction—novels or novellas—check them out. They’re also interested in seeing poetry and shorter work.

Baen Books
They publish science fiction and fantasy novels, 100,000 – 130,000 words, and say their pay is “very competitive.”

Bookfish Books
They publish young adult and new adult novels, including science fiction and fantasy YA and NA.

Carina Press
They’re the digital-only (actually digital-mostly) publishing arm of Harlequin, and I’ve published with them in the past. They aren’t interested in straight fantasy or science fiction, but they do publish fantasy romance and scifi romance.

Cosmic Egg
This UK-based publisher of fantasy, scifi, horror, and paranormal fiction is upfront about their terms on their website.

DAW Books
These guys are a big deal in the fantasy and science fiction genre. Although they’re closed for unagented submissions at the time of this post’s publication, they say they’ll be open to them again later in 2018, so check back with them! They aren’t really interested in novels shorter than 80,000 words.

East of the Web
This is a little different from getting a publishing deal, but I think it’s interesting. You can submit a science fiction short story to be published on their website, which gets pretty good traffic. I don’t think they pay anything, but they don’t take exclusive publishing rights, either. For newer writers wanting to find readers and/or make more of a digital footprint as an author, they might be worth checking out. They do note that they recommend filing your US or UK copyright for your work before it’s published online.

Edge Publishing
They publish both science fiction and fantasy novels of 75,000 – 100,000. Occasionally, they’ll publish YA speculative fiction.

Entangled Publishing (Teen Crave)
They’re looking for science fiction, fantasy, dystopian, and steampunk romances, 45,000 – 60,000 words, with main characters who are 16 to 18 years old.

Harper Voyager
This is another big-deal publisher: the science fiction and fantasy imprint of HarperCollins. Although they aren’t open to unagented submissions right now, they do open calls sometimes, so bookmark their page and/or follow them on social media.

Jolly Fish Press
If you’re writing middle grade or young adult science fiction or fantasy, these guys might be an option.

Montag Press Collective
This is a California-based publisher of science fiction, urban fantasy, and speculative fiction, among other things.

Oftomes Publishing
If you’re writing young adult or new adult fantasy, this UK-based publisher is an option. Their covers are gorgeous! They’re looking for novels between 50,000 and 120,000 words.

Severed Press
This small publisher of horror and science fiction is open to both novella and novel-length fiction, and they have some pretty specific needs listed on their site.

Tartarus
This is a small UK-based publisher of literary supernatural and horror fiction. They print distinctive hardcover editions, and they’re open to submissions of both short stories and novels. They aren’t looking for sword-and-sorcery type fantasy.

Third Flatiron
This publisher often has calls for fantasy and science fiction short story submissions for their quarterly themed anthologies. They’re usually looking for stories of 1,500 and 3,000 words. Check in on them now and again! And maybe check out a past anthology to understand what they’re all about.

Tor Books
A big, big name in fantasy novels. Scroll way down to find the submission guidelines. I’ll say that I’ve had the experience of submitting to them and never receiving a reply, but surely most people do hear back.

World Weaver Press
They’re sometimes open to submissions of science fiction and fantasy novellas and novels. As I’m writing this post, they have open calls for short fiction for anthologies: check that out here.

OWS Steampunk Anthology
What they want:
Between now and January 28, we’re accepting short stories in the Steampunk genre. We’re looking for stories that cover a wide range of Steampunk topics.

Though many of the works in the Steampunk genre take place in London during Victoria’s reign, don’t let that limit you. The steam era happened all over the world and with different consequences. The “scientific romances” of the 19th century are a wonderful place to get inspiration, and those stories take their characters into the center of the earth, into outer space, and through time. So get ready to spread your pneumatic wings and let your imagination fly!

One of the amazing things about Steampunk is how it can be mashed up with a variety of genres. So bring us your horror, your romance, your adventure, and everything in between. Deadline: January 28, 2019
Length: 3,500-10,000 words
Payment: Royalties + ebook contributor copy
Submission Guidelines: https://ourwriteside.com/submit-annual-anthology/
Moonlight: A Queer Werewolf Anthology
What they want:
This anthology is a small collection of comics and short stories about queer werewolves.

Whether your werewolves are in space, school, or ruffing it in the outdoors, it doesn’t matter to us! We are looking for stories that span genres and tones. Your werewolves may be moody or the life of the party. All that matters is that they are openly queer and that there is an engaging story around them to be told.

Content creators do not need to identify as queer and/or LGBT+, however preference will be given to own voices and/or LGBT+ creators.Deadline: November 30, 2018
Length: 1,000-2,000 words preferred
Payment: $0.07 CAD/word for short stories
Submission Guidelines: https://moonlightanthology.tumblr.com/submission
The Worlds of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Vol V
What they want:
Original - (previously unpublished - NO REPRINTS) genre fiction that explores as well as entertains. Readers like to get involved with bright characters and strange worlds. They like to be frightened and unnerved and they like to see magic and fantasy worlds that are not a slightly different Tolkien or Martin. Read the FREE anthologies published in the previous 4 years and get a feel for what can get across the line. I have no set taste pattern, as the anthologies will show, and I try and not stamp my preferences over the work selected. The material simply has to be good and it has to be the best you can offer. Deadline: October 15, 2019
Length: 5,000-10,000 words
Payment: AUD$75
Submission Guidelines: http://www.robertnstephenson.com/anthology.html
Vampires, Zombies and Ghosts
What they want:
We welcome stories involving all types of supernatural beings… and mixing and matching of different types of beings in the same story is acceptable. There is no requirement as to genre; stories can be sci-fi, mystery, romance, adventure, etc. Simultaneous submissions permitted, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. Reprints are accepted as long as all rights have reverted to you; please identify your submission as a reprint when you send it in.Deadline: December 15, 2018
Length: 1,200-6,000 words
Payment: $20
Submission Guidelines: http://smokingpenpress.com/submissions-2

Vex Me No More
What they want:
We want your witch stories! Though they do not necessarily have to be female-centric, they do need to be tales of powerful, unique beings. Remember, this is a horror anthology, so while you can have elements of other genres, we want to be scared. Deadline: December 31, 2018
Length: Up to 5,000 words
Payment: 0.02/word + contributor copy
Submission Guidelines: https://www.thehorrorqueen.com/submissions
