Bryan Singer In Talks To Helm Red Sonja Adaptation
Bryan Singer In Talks To Helm Red Sonja Adaptation
X-Men director Bryan Singer is reportedly in talks to helm a Red Sonja adaptation for Millenium Films.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singer would direct the film with Ashley Miller penning the screenplay. Previously, the two worked together on X-Men: First Class with Singer producing and Miller writing. Following the success of Wonder Woman, Millenium is aiming to spawn a new franchise that would exist in the current rise of female-centric comic book movies. Attaching Singer to such a high-profile adaptation such as this would certainly help get his career back on track after multiple negative stories in recent memory including sexual misconduct allegations and being fired from the upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Red Sonja was made into a live-action film in 1985 that featured Brigitte Nielsen in the title role and reprising Conan the Barbarian star Arnold Schwarzenegger as Lord Kalidor. Critics panned the film and it currently sits at a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Shwarzenegger himself said it was the worst film that he had ever worked on. This new adaptation has been in development Hell for quite a while. Robert Rodriguez was attached to direct in 2008 with Rose McGowan slated to star as Red Sonja, but that version got scrapped in 2009. Millenium revived the film in 2017 with Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta producing.

Millenium has not made an official announcement on their decision yet but it would certainly be an interesting choice considering Singerís experience with other Marvel properties. The biggest question we have is whether or not the iconic steel bikini would make it into a modern adaption of the 70ís heroine. It seems many female-driven hero stories are pushing for a more conservative look so it will be interesting to see if they keep the two piece armor set or adjust it for our modern society.
