Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie: Actor says new project scares him

In a move that still has fanboys baffled, Warner Bros. is moving ahead with its previously announced Joker origin movie. The film will be separate from the DC Extended Universe and will feature a new actor playing the role, with Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) signing on earlier this month for the role. Phoenix recently sat down with Collider to discuss the film and his feelings on the role.

Phoenix, who considers himself very careful when it comes to choosing which films he works on, found himself impressed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover)’s script and vision for the film and the universe he creates, calling it “unique” and admitting that it “scares the f***ing s**t” out of him. The 43-year-old actor also discussed ideas he had similar to this film not too long ago.

“Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?’” Phoenix said.

Ironically, he also discussed how he thought the Joker would not be the right character for this concept, as this character study has been done before for the popular villain and it wouldn’t be right to revisit it. Phoenix also described his feelings on the expectations coming from the role, saying he always feels anxiety when he takes on a role from a writer/director for fear he might not have met their expectations.

“But it feels magnified because it’s not just one person’s expectations, but what you’re telling me is that there’s at least a dozen,” Phoenix said.

In discussing the film itself, Phoenix said the genre is indescribable, landing not in one genre or the other, but rather feeling like a purely unique feature and that the most important thing about the film is Phillips’ passion for the project. He finds Phillips’ want to dive into the “real life struggles” of comic characters that is often left unexposed in the film, and that he always felt these comic characters deserved to be studied and that Phillips finds this idea “appealing.”

Phillips will be directing the film on a script co-written by him and Scott Silver (The Finest Hours) and though no release date is currently set for the film, principal photography is expected to begin this September.

Robert De Niro in Talks to Join Joaquin Phoenix in Joker

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Robert De Niro is in negotiations to join Joaquin Phoenix in Warner Bros. upcoming Joker stand-alone movie. If a deal is made, De Niro would appear in his first comic book movie playing the role of a talk show host instrumental in the Joker’s origin. Zazie Beets (Deadpool 2) is also in talks for a role in the film.

De Niro has won or been nominated for his work in such classics as The Godfather: Part II and Raging Bull, appeared in crime dramas and thrillers such as Goodfellas and Heat, and even comedies such as the Meet the Parents series and Analyze This. While he has occasionally dipped a toe in fantastical or fantasy fare with The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle or Stardust, he has eschewed the material and has certainly avoided comic book movies.

Under the direction of Todd Phillips (The Hangover franchise), the new film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Phillips will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter). The film will be produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff and executive produced by Richard Baratta and begins production later this year. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Joker is set to debut in theaters on October 4, 2019. On that release date the film will go up against Paramount’s Gemini Man from director Ang Lee and Fox’s thriller The Woman in the Window starring Amy Adams.

Warner Bros. is also reportedly in development on a separate Joker feature film which would star Jared Leto as the villain, reprising his role from Suicide Squad.
