Theosophical teachings conceive of our present race being the Fifth, or Aryan Race.
The Fourth Race was the great race of Atlantis.  Catastrophes such as those experienced by the Fourth Race have not as yet made their appearance on Fifth
Race horizons, although many people (other than Theosophists) are of the opinion that we will shortly be bidding a fond farewell to the period of stability we have en-
joyed since the Old Country went down.  The Theosophists opine that the destruction of Atlantis was accomplished by a series of catastrophes varying in character from great cataclysms in which whole territories and populations perished, to comparatively unimportant landslides of the type that occur on coastlines to this day.

Four great catastrophes are conceived of: the first took place in the Miocene Age, some
800,000 years ago; the second, which was less important, occurred about 200,000 years ago; the third, which destroyed all of Atlantis except the island of Poseidon, mentioned by
Plato, 80,000 years ago.  The fourth, and final catastrophe, they see as having occurred around 9564 BC.



                        Colonel W.Scott-Elliot, to whom the task of presenting the Atlantis and allied data seems to have fallen in the 1890s, included in his book four maps that purport to show the world prior to each of the four events.

 Where the worthy  gentleman
obtained these maps we are not told, but I am inclined to suspect that they have been 'put together' by early scholars within the Theosophical movement to illustrate
their beliefs.  Scott Eliot tells us:


"The first map represents the land surface of the earth as it existed about a millionyears ago,
when the Atlantean Race was at its height, and before the first great submergence took place
about 800,000 years ago. 

The continent of Atlantis itself, it will be observed, extended from a point a few degrees east of
Iceland to about the site now occupied by Rio de Janeiro, in South America. 

Embracing Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, the Southern and Eastern States of America, up to and including Labrador, it stretched across the ocean to our own islands - Scotland and Ireland, and
a small portion of the north of England, forming one of its promontories - whileits equatorial lands embraced Brazil and the whole stretch of ocean to the African Gold Coast. 

Scattered fragments of what eventually became the continents of Europe, Africa and America, as
well as remains of the still older, and once wide-spread continent of Lemuria, are also shown on
this map.

 The remains of the still older Hyperborean continent, which was inhabited by the Second Root Race."
