Florida city sends out zombie alert message

Lake Worth residents were shocked to receive an alert warning them about zombies earlier this week.
The unexpected notice, which was sent at 1:45 a.m. during a power outage on Sunday morning, referred to 'extreme zombie activity' in both the Lake Worth and Terminus areas.

The complete message, which was sent in all caps, read:

"POWER OUTAGE AND ZOMBIE ALERT FOR RESIDENTS OF LAKE WORTH AND TERMINUS. THERE ARE NOW FAR LESS THAN SEVEN THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY CUSTOMERS INVOLVED DUE TO EXTREME ZOMBIE ACTIVITY. RESTORATION TIME UNCERTAIN."

Unsurprisingly, it turned out that the zombie references had been sent in error.

"We are looking into reports that the system mentioned zombies," said Lake Worth's public information officer Ben Kerr. "I want to reiterate that Lake Worth does not have any zombie activity currently and apologize for the system message."

Earlier this year, Hawaii accidentally sent out an alert warning everybody that a missile was inbound. It firmly stated that citizens should seek shelter immediately because "THIS IS NOT A DRILL".

People took it extremely seriously. Panic and, ahem, "other activities" ensued.

It was a mistake, a human error. No missiles were inbound, and everybody was safe.

This week, a city in Florida sent out an even more terrifying warning, during a freaking blackout. Lake Worth used their push alert system to send out a message warning residents that zombies were headed their way, at 1.45 in the morning.

Residents who received the alert would have been woken by the message, in all caps:

"POWER OUTAGE AND ZOMBIE ALERT FOR RESIDENTS OF LAKE WORTH AND TERMINUS. THERE ARE NOW FAR LESS THAN SEVEN THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY CUSTOMERS INVOLVED DUE TO EXTREME ZOMBIE ACTIVITY. RESTORATION TIME UNCERTAIN."

The alert, as you've guessed, was not linked to any zombie outbreak. If it was, you'd be hearing about it from international news outlets, the screams of strangers as they clamber for a bunker, or some guy saying "brains" over and over again as they try to get into your house.

It must have been pretty alarming for people waking up at nearly 2.00am, because the power outage really was real.

The city's public information officer, Ben Kerr, cleared up the mess on the community Facebook page Lake Worth Live, the Palm Beach Post reports.

“We are looking into reports that the system mentioned zombies,” he said in the post.

“I want to reiterate that Lake Worth does not have any zombie activity currently and apologize for the system message.”

Power was soon restored, probably because there weren't any zombies to deal with beforehand.

People have questions. Mainly this.

But why do they have a zombie alert setting? That's my real question https://t.co/78zF0v3ZMT

There hasn't been an update on what happened as yet, but the "terminus" line in the alert is a reference to a location in the TV show The Walking Dead, which hasn't gone unnoticed.

So the mistake is likely due to the department responsible testing out some "fun" warning alerts, which accidentally went live during a real power outage.

Bizarrely, this isn't the only zombie government mixup to have happened this month. On May 17, a police department apologized after their warning sign told road users to run away, as zombies were further up the road.

In this case, someone had gained access to the sign and changed the message. The other spoof messages were not shown by the department due to their X-rated nature.

The zombie apocalypse isn’t coming (nor will it ever), but a few less savvy citizens of a tiny sliver of Pennsylvania may have thought otherwise. Thanks to the mischievous behavior of a bunch of troublemakers, a digital traffic sign on the East Market Street of Springettsbury Township informed people that the brain-munching monsters were en route.

As reported by USA Today, this message appeared in the area last Thursday.

“On May 17 at 16.58 hours STPD was dispatched to E Market St near Mt Zion Rd for the report of strange messages on a Penn Dot traffic board. It appears that someone gained access to the sign and typed in their own messages,” the Springettsbury Township Police Department explains in a Facebook post.

“We hope there was no public alarm today as there were no reports of Zombies anywhere in Springettsbury Township,” they add, much to some people’s relief.

It’s not clear how this particular prank was managed, but it’s fair to say that it caused mixed reactions, judging by the comments under the local police force’s post. Many thought it was well-meaning and fairly amusing – “they’re just silly words,” as one opined – whereas a few others appeared to suggest that it could unnecessarily scare the local kids.

Another message, said to be far more sexually explicit, appeared on another traffic sign at the same time. People have been inquiring as to what it says, but the police department remains schtum on the issue: “Let’s just say the other message is not G rated,” they explain.

Fair play to the police there for clearly having a good sense of humor. This is exemplified in response to someone asking them how they’ll ever know when a real zombie-based emergency has occurred.

“We use the color-coded Zombie alert system. Right now we are green,” they respond. “If it ever gets to orange we will release further instructions.”

The public generally seemed to approve of this vigilance. “Thanks for keeping us safe from the zombies. You do a great job, we haven't seen a single zombie,” one person commented.
