Infinity War Theory: Loki Was Posing As Bruce Banner

Did Loki survive Avengers: Infinity War after all, by hiding in plain sight, disguised as Bruce Banner? Marvel's Kevin Feige teased that the deaths in Infinity War may be permanent, and the film's opening sequence went one step further, with Thanos assuring viewers, "No resurrections this time." The Mad Titan might as well have given a nod and a wink to the viewers as he said it, promising that this time Marvel would break their tradition of fake deaths. But, by the end of the film, it was clear the stakes weren't quite so high as promised. Thanos's finger-snap killed off half the life in universe, but the most notable victims were all characters who have confirmed sequels. No doubt there will be long-term consequences from Thanos's atrocity, but some of these were fake deaths.

If that's the case, any death in Infinity War is open to question. Including, of course, as always, the death of Loki. The death of the God of Mischief was hardly unexpected; he was known to possess the Tesseract, and that meant he was standing in Thanos's firing line. Killing off Loki in the first scene was a shock tactic, a way of making the film seem powerful and evocative, and it truly worked. But was Loki actually tricking, not only Thanos, but the viewers themselves? Former entertainment journalist Josh Dickey has an interesting theory that Loki was really fooling everyone the whole time. Again. And is alive and well posing as Banner.

It's a surprising theory, but taking it a step deeper reveals there's quite a strong flow of argument to it. Let's take a look at the evidence:

Civil War, Hulks Arc, and Where is Hulk Actually?

Bruce Banner Is Suspiciously Out Of Character

There's something not quite right about the scenes on Earth involving Bruce Banner. He seems ever-so-slightly out of character, rushing from one situation to the next with an air of bemused desperation. When Banner is finally reunited with Black Widow, the two trade an awkward smile and then avoid any personal talk at all. The Russos have suggested that's because two years have passed, and both characters have moved on; that doesn't quite work for Banner, though, who spent the last two years as the Hulk. To Banner, the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron were only a few days ago. It also doesn't explain quite why filming a reunion scene left Scarlett Johansson "so devastated" - perhaps she's actually referring to a reunion scene that we haven't seen yet.

Related: Did Marvel Change Hulk’s Story In Avengers: Infinity War?

Bruce Banner's "performance issues" compound the problem. The film shows him struggling to transform into the Hulk. It was an unexpected plot twist, and not an altogether satisfying one. The fundamental problem was that viewers couldn't understand why the Hulk wouldn't come out and play during the Battle of Wakanda. The common view is that the Hulk was afraid, shocked after being beaten down so easily by Thanos. The Russos themselves have seemed surprised by this interpretation, instead proposing that the Hulk is tired of being brought out just to fight. He hates Banner with a passion, and hates being his weapon. Is it possible, though, that in reality these "performance issues" were essentially just a bit of acting and illusion on Loki's part?

The final point here is that Bruce Banner knows far too much about Infinity Stones - more than he has any right to. He also seems to remember everything the Hulk experienced on the Asgardian vessel, and that's just odd; previous films have established that Banner can remember nothing from his time as the Hulk. Something about this just doesn't add up.

Warning: This story contains major spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War.

Okay, so you've seen Avengers: Infinity War, possibly multiple times if the box office numbers are any indication. You're still trying to suss out what's what — not just because of that harrowing ending, but also everything else that occurs throughout the film.

Well, it seems at least one actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has tweeted out what could be seen as a pretty big spoiler. It seems to remove any doubt about the fate of the character for those that have seen the film and were left to wonder if this person would be around for Avengers 4 (and beyond) next year.

Yup, Idris just sorta... tweeted it out.

Okay, so, Heimdall's fate isn't exactly like that of, say, Black Panther or Spider-Man, mourned by theater-goers everywhere. Heimdall's great, don't get me wrong. But he's a fairly minor character compared to others who met untimely ends in Infinity War.

So, it appears as if this confirms Heimdall won't be back which, as our own Angie Han pointed out, isn't a surprise, really, as it seemed his character had run its course. What's more, his death came in the film's opening scene — so, not exactly a major spoiler after the first 10 minutes — at the hands of Thanos who put a blade through his chest.

That's... a pretty concrete death, even in the world of the MCU.

Side note: it's possible, as The A.V. Club notes, that maybe Heimdall is somehow brought back for Avengers 4 and maybe Elba was just saying goodbye to his character now that shooting is done on the coming sequel. Still, I'm sticking with the original idea here: he dead.

But given Marvel and Disney's anti-spoiler stance (looking at you, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland), who knows what trouble Elba could be in with the bosses.

Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland Sure Did Their Best to Spoil Infinity War

TFW you said something in an interview you shouldn’t have, but got away with it, then didn’t.

One of the most fascinating things in the lead-up to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War was the cast admitting very few of them had seen a full script. The reason, according to directors the Russo Brothers, was to cut down on the chance of spoilers leaking out.

“It takes a lot of work to censor yourself,” Anthony Russo told io9. “You have to constantly be analyzing what you’re saying on a very detailed level because fans and journalists are so sophisticated, they can intuit quite a bit by what you say. So [keeping the scripts from the actors] was just a way to make everybody’s life a little easier.”

And while it worked out for the most part, it wasn’t 100 percent successful. Last year on Good Morning America, Mark Ruffalo... Mr. Bruce Banner... said something that seemed like a joke at the time. But now, we realize, it wasn’t. Also, he’s not the only one.

Screencrush went back and dug up this clip from the D23 Expo in 2017. Watch this. Especially Don Cheadle’s reaction.

Now we know that, despite kind of playing it off, Ruffalo was not kidding and “everyone dies” was only a slight exaggeration. But it’s interesting to note that no men in black suits came to take him away immediately following his comment. Neither he nor Cheadle’s characters die, but the list of those who do is still impressive. So while neither actor may have read the whole script (Cheadle actually told us about this on the set), there’s still danger in the game.

Want more danger? This is great.

Last week, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland joined Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers in Los Angeles to introduce some screenings of Infinity War. However, it seemed like maybe Holland didn’t realize if they were introducing the film or doing a post-credits Q&A, because when he came out to introduce the film, he exclaimed “I’m alive!” Then, going off his lead, Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, added “I’m also alive.”

Um, you guys, these people hadn’t seen the movie yet. Digital Spy found the video.

“It’s important for us that we protect the story at all costs,” Joe Russo told io9. “And we just felt it would be best if people just didn’t know the whole story and be easier for them then to talk about it and say ‘I wasn’t given the script.’”

Even so, nobody’s perfect. Not even Avengers. Here’s one more bonus supercut of Cumberbatch trying to prevent the spoilers from falling right out of Holland’s mouth on the press tour.
