Chris Carter comments on the end of The X-Files

Is this the end of The X-Files? Back in October, Gillian Anderson confirmed the 11th season on FOX (which premieres tonight) would be her last, and has now confirmed Agent Scully’s farewell in a new interview with TV Insider, with creator Chris Carter also chiming in on an AMA.

“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me,” Anderson explains. “I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement… because my understanding was that this was a single season.”

“For me, the show has always been Mulder & Scully,” Carter responded on Reddit. “So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider. Was her character given a proper goodbye? I think you will want to sit down and watch the series finale very carefully.”

In 2018, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, and they’re joined by co-star Mitch Pileggi as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner and William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Karin Konoval will also return for the series, having first appeared as Mrs. Peacock in the fan-favorite episode “Home” from the original series run. Barbara Hershey joins the series as a new character, Erika Price.

The all-new 10-episode installment once again will be executive-produced by creator Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning in their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

The X-Files features the return of David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner. The series originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully and Mulder, as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions, The X-Files is created and executive-produced by Chris Carter.

The X-Files Season 11 is set to premiere Wednesday, January 3 on FOX.
