School cafeteria workers in New Orleans are fighting for better working conditions and a union. Before Hurricane Katrina, cafeteria workers were members of the same union as teachers. All that changed after the storm, when the state dismissed thousands of school employees, many of them Black, as it turned the local education system into an unprecedented charter experiment. Now, a wealthy religious contractor, which is partially staffed by volunteers, manages much of the lunch preparation for local elementary schools. The lunch program provides a glimpse of the way in which top-down policies have turned New Orleans into a petri dish for school privatization.
As this exclusive Truthout investigation by reporter Mike Ludwig reveals, the New Orleans experiment in full-scale school privatization created both a race to the top and a race to the bottom. Disadvantaged students were pushed out of schools under pressure to improve test scores or close their doors, and jobs that once supported the city's Black communities were replaced by low-paying contractor gigs, or disappeared altogether. Please read this special report on the plight facing New Orleans' cafeteria workers -- and what it reveals about the charter system as a whole, in New Orleans and beyond.
