SHADOWGRAM Official News Update Number 400

MAY 23, 2017

********************************************

Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), provides the following confirmed news in this ShadowGram Official Dark Shadows News Online Update "Bulletin" via the FREE ShadowGram Group List at yahoo.com

***** DAVID SELBY IN LIVE-PERFORMANCE/RECORDING IN LOS ANGELES

DAVID (Quentin) performs in the fact-based, world-premiere drama THE TUG OF WAR an LA Theatre Works (LATW)’ staged reading / live recording at the James Bridges Theatre on the UCLA campus in Westwood (Los Angeles) May 25-28.

David portrays “Dean Rusk,” the U.S. Secretary of State from 1961-69 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the lead-up to the Vietnam War. The docudrama play explores the political, national, international, and personal interactions and consequences between the American government, the threat of Communism, and the strong potential of major – and possibly cataclysmic – international warfare.

David has participated in numerous LATW programs over the years. The concept and presentation is unique and fully involves the cast members, audience, and sound personnel.

Each performance ((in this case, 5 total)) is presented on a bare stage. The cast members are seated behind a row of standing microphones. Their scripts in hand, they step up to a microphone when their character is speaking, then return to their seats. At the edge of the stage is a “sound engineer” who creates live necessary sound effects, pre-recorded music, and similar appropriate additions throughout the program.

Everything is fully recorded live, including audience reactions. The final project is a combination of selected parts from the various performances, including the sound and audience portions.  Listening to the released overall recording is like being in front of a live performance, complete with the spoken words, sound effects, music, and audience response. When listening to this final recorded version, the listener provides his/her own imaginary costumes, sets, etc., while being immersed in the story and distinctive characters.

Live recorded performances:

Thursday, May 25 - 8:00
Friday, May 26 - 8:00

Saturday, May 27 - 3:00 & 8:00

Sunday, May 28 - 4:00

“The James Bridges Theatre is conveniently located on the northern edge of the UCLA campus, in Melnitz Hall, just off Sunset (at Hilgard). Enter UCLA from Hilgard just south of Sunset Blvd. and park in Lot 3 on the lower level.”

Publicity: “A LATW World Premiere Docudrama.

Kennedy, Khrushchev and the brink of WWIII. The judgment of an untested president is all that stands between us and WWIII. As Soviet nuclear missiles move ever closer to Cuba, President John F. Kennedy must chart a course between conflicting counsel and unparalleled emotional stakes to prevent nuclear annihilation. The newly-minted U.S. President is put to the ultimate test in this riveting original commission from (playwright) David Rambo.

"Hollywood & Broadway’s finest perform without sets or costumes for later broadcast on public radio nationwide. Casts subject to change. Box office: (310) 827-0889 M-F, 12:00-6:00. After hours: (866) 811-4111. ALL SALES FINAL.”

Broadway World 4-25: An all-star cast is set for the world premiere docudrama THE TUG OF WAR…, an L.A. Theatre Works-commissioned work that explores decision-making by a president in crisis.  With the world on the brink of war, the judgment of an untested president is called into question. What kind of intellectual and emotional stamina does it take to make the right decision? As Soviet nuclear missiles move ever closer to Cuba, President John F. Kennedy must parse his inner circle's conflicting counsel to prevent nuclear annihilation.

“L.A. Theatre Works' syndicated radio theater series broadcasts weekly on public radio stations across the U.S. (locally in Southern California on KPFK 90.7 FM); can be heard daily in China and around the world on the Radio Beijing Network; can be downloaded as a podcast via iTunes and Wondery.com; and can be streamed on demand at www.latw.org.

--- Publicity: “A mix of high-sheen professionalism and raw vulnerability make an evening with Donna McKechnie quite a singular sensation.” – The New York Times

“Tony Award winner, Donna McKechnie’s new show, ‘Same Place: Another Time’, is a musical déjà vu celebrating the scintillating ‘70s in NYC - the heyday of Studio 54. The journey she takes puts a personal spin on the ‘ingénue’ coming to New York, finding love and success, losing her innocence along the way, perhaps, but never her spirit. It is beautifully illuminated by the music of Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Marvin Hamlisch, Peter Allen, Jim Croce and Leroy Anderson.

“She received a Tony Award for her performance in the original production of A CHORUS LINE, and is regarded internationally as one of Broadways foremost dancing and singing leading ladies. Her Broadway shows include HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, (NATL TOUR), THE EDUCATION OF H*Y*M*A*N-K*A*P*L*A*N, SONDHEIM - A MUSICAL TRIBUTE, ON THE TOWN, PROMISES-PROMISES, COMPANY, STATE FAIR and THE VISIT. She has starred in numerous productions in London's West End, including PROMISES PROMISES, COMPANY, FOLLIES and THE WILD PARTY.”

***** IN MEMORY OF STUART LEICHTER, NANCY BARRETT’S HUSBAND

ShadowGram is saddened to share that Stuart Shepard Leichter, husband of NANCY BARRETT (Carolyn, Millicent, Pansy, Charity, Leticia, Melanie), has passed away after a long illness.

SHADOWGRAM fondly remembers how Stuart was a familiar presence over the years as he attended several DS Festival events with Nancy. He was an entertaining and interesting man to talk and work with. Additionally, he worked on her various 1-woman stage shows. For many years, Stuart served as a dental surgeon in New York. He also enjoyed traveling the world with Nancy during their time together over the past 2 decades.
