Two-Story Diorama
This calm, quiet scene conceals a riot of activity taking place just beneath the surface. To see what's happening in the coral reef below the water level, visit the lower level of this unique two-story diorama.

It is a lovely painting, Tom!

Too bad the the two-story diorama wouldn't enlarge.

Hi Desiree

I would like to say this, there is a Geo "coincidence" between these North-West Atlantic Islands, they are positioned in the same meridian area of the Westernmost part of Greenland, don't get me wrong, the reason i am stating this, is because we know of a strong magnetic field up North (Iceland and Greenland), concluding that a dislocation from the South, of a highly magnetic formation, could have left in that area, unfinished magnetic influences, accounting to several navigational disorientation. Just a thought,

please look at the Bahamas in these two maps,

Opinion of  geologists refers to the impossibility of a sunken continent and not to a sunken island in the
Atlantic Ocean. That island must have been much smaller than Australia, so one cannot call it a continent.

Plato has never claimed that a whole continent has disappeared, he only referred to an island, in front of another continent.

Not all geologists deny the possibility of a sunken island in Central America. After the Charles Berlitz book The Mystery of Atlantis, a Canadian Hungarian geologist-topographer's book was published, entitled Atlantis: The Seven Seals. The author, Z.A. Simon, called the attention to these controversies. He included some supporting conclusions of Dr. J. Manson Valentine, M. Dmitri Ribikoff, E. Umland and C. Umland, Robert B. Stacy-Judd, Dr. David Zink, John P. Cohane, Peter Tompkins, Pino Turolla, Captain Alexander, Francis Hitching, James Bailey, Dr. C.J. Cazeau, Dr. S.D. Scott, Brad Steiger and William R. Fix.

The June 1981 edition of Marine Geology shows some radiocarbon dates on mangrove peat, based on the estimate of Broecker and Kulp, listing dates between 5590 and 3680 BCE, with connection of the gradual sinking of the Florida-Bimini region. Most recently the rate of the sea level's rise has slowed to 4.5 inches per century. Prior to that time it was one foot per century.

Near Andros Island, underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau found a huge submerged cave 165 feet beneath the surface.

There are stalactites and stalagmites in it, that can be formed in the open air only. Marine sediments on the walls of the grotto enabled scientists to estimate its submersion around or after 10,000 BCE.

The submarine topography of the Bahamian region shown in the huge Russian Atlas Mira by detailed isobaths, catches the attention of a topographer.

The sea floor on the northern side of Cuba, Haiti and Puerto Rico indicates a definite system of submerged valleys of ancient rivers, combined with sunken mountain ranges.

The "Tongue of the Ocean" at Andros Island is undoubtedly an underwater ravine caused by terrible tectonic forces, surrounded by almost vertical walls, as a "memento" of the catastrophe.

The Bahamas is the only region of the world where Atlantis can be located, if it ever existed.

Simon offers an "accurate" map of Plato's rectangular island with its given dimensions as 2,000 by 3,000 stadia, overlaying its outline on the suspected ancient irregular shoreline of that traditional island in the Bahamas region. (An Attic stadium corresponds to 177.6 meters.)

                                                            Andros

In June 2004, we returned to Andros with a production team with the National Geographic. The underwater Andros Platform, found in 2003, which we believe may have been a breakwater or building platform, was investigated. We found areas that we had not previously seen and filmed several areas of the Platform that looked like they had large stone slabs arranged as steps.

In addition, a University of Leiden Physics Department specialist analyzed the toolmark we found at Andros in 2003. He found another toolmark on our video and we soon reviewed more of the film we had taken during several visits in 2003. Numerous other toolmarks were found all of which escaped our attention when making our DVD. The toolmarks match countless other toolmarks on giant stone formations in Peru and elsewhere. In addition, the existence of an ancient structure in central Andros, overlooking the deep water on Andros' east shore, was verified during the June 2004 trip. A cave was found under the site of this ancient structure. The cave descended about 12-feet straight down and led to a 40-foot long horizontal cave with human artifacts.

One of the things we considered doing at Andros was refinding (and documenting) the underwater petroglyphs Herb Sawinsky found in the early 1970s. At Andros our time was completely taken up with other tasks and after talking to Sawinski about the location of the petroglyphs, we decided that we needed more time and equipment for the task. The petroglyphs are located in a narrow, small cave that is accessed on the shoreline at South Andros. The narrow cave descends deeply into salt water.

We hope Donato and Bader find these interesting carvings as it will prove (to all but the skeptics) that Andros was inhabited thousands of years ago. During our several visits to Andros we managed to speak to numerous divers and dive operators, but not one reported ever encountering any petroglyphs in any blue holes or caves. However, these divers tend to dive in areas that are visually appealing and wide so that safety of those diving is a major consideration. We believe that Sawinski's petroglyph discovery was legitimate and think that if Donato and Bader's efforts are successful, it will represent a major archaeological discovery.

The ARE's Search For Atlantis DVD documentary has been updated with 2004 information and is now available. The video is now 72-minutes in length. Information can be accessed here.

Searching For The Great Stone Circle of Andros

By Dr. Greg Little

The years 1968 and 1969 produced a series of reports from the Bimini area of the Bahamas of underwater structures: stone temples, columns, walls, roads, staircases, hexagons, pyramids,
and a host of other forms were “discovered.”

The stimulus for these reports can be attributed to a prediction made by Edgar Cayce in 1940.
In a reading conducted on the location of Atlantis and one of the Hall of Records that was
placed near Bimini sometime before 10,000 B.C., Cayce stated that

“Poseidia will be among the first portions of Atlantis to rise again. Expect it in sixty-eight and

sixty-nine, not so far away.”

The most cited 1968 discovery was the Bimini Road, a J-shaped series of stones found about
a mile off North Bimini in about 15 feet of water.

The road was immediately declared an Atlantean wall, road, or temple remains by a few

explorers, but professional investigations have proven otherwise. The road is made up of
natural beachrock with an erosion and cracking pattern which takes on a manmade appearance.

This does not mean that the feature wasn't altered by man or that it wasn't used in ancient
times. But research on the road has ground to a standstill.

In 1969 two commercial pilots were flying over Andros Island, which lies south of Bimini.

Andros is the largest of the Bahama Islands, extending about 100 by 40 miles. It is almost entirely
swamp, is largely uninhabited, and is considered to be unexplored.

On the east coast of the island a few residents live with dive shops, fishing resorts, and little else.
The pilots spotted a portion of a huge series of concentric stone circles in shallow water, and the pilot,
Robert Brush, snapped a photo of it. The photo is reproduced with this article.

Brush and his copilot Trigg Adams, played important roles in the 1960s-70s frenzy of Atlantis stories.

While some of the visual anomalies spotted by them have turned out to be natural or recent features,
the Andros stone circles have remained enigmatic. Charles Berlitz reproduced the photo and told the tale
in one of his books, and, more recently, Andrew Collins showed the photo in his excellent 'Gateway to
Atlantis'.

The Andros circle appears to consist of three concentric stone rings. A little over half of the formation
was covered by sand in 1969 and the entire ring was then under about 3 feet of water. Virtually all of
the individuals who have seen it believe that it is now completely covered by sand.

Collins termed the Andros circles as “arguably one of the most enigmatic structures” in the
region.

Collins gave the size of the stone circle reported by the pilots as about 1000 feet in diameter
with the stones forming the rings about three feet thick.

Berlitz, according to archaeologist William Donato, gave the size at 1200 feet in diameter.
This would, of course, make it far larger than virtually every stone circle known in the world.

Richard Wingate's (see below) 1980 book, Lost Outpost of Atlantis, gives the diameter of
the circle, described as a "colossal stadium" in his book, as an astonishing 1000 yards — or
well over half a mile. In addition, Wingate related that the pilots first spotted the structure
in 1979.

Both of those figures (1000 yards and 1979) may have been typographical errors. But they do
point out the immense problem all this contradictory evidence would pose to serious archaeo-
logists who wanted to find and investigate the structure.

A brief computer analysis of the original photo by Dr. Greg Little, (author of this article)
led to several conclusions about the structure.

If the circle is 1200 feet in diameter, some of the smallest stones in its rings are at least
18 feet in diameter—far too large for such a structure and certainly not consistent with
the pilots’ estimations that the rings were between three to six feet apart.

If the circle is actually only 600 feet in diameter, the smallest stones would be 6 feet in
diameter—still too large.

The most reasonable estimate is that the diameter of the rings is 100-120 feet.

Most of the stones would then be about one foot in diameter. By way of comparison, the
Big Horn Medicine Wheel in Wyoming is 82 feet in diameter.

Donato’s Project Alta (now called APEX), conducted in 1997 and 1998, attempted to locate
the stone circle by air.

The first unsuccessful attempt took place in North Andros. Donato later found out that the
circle was in South Andros. The second unsuccessful aerial attempt looked along the coast
of Andros.

In his report to the Cayce organization, Donato revealed that Author Richard Wingate had
related to him that the circles were not on the coast, but were actually on the interior of
the island within its many mangrove swamps.

I contacted Wingate in January 2003 and was told that Wingate had actually filmed the
circles in 1971, but he couldn’t remember the exact location. He sent me a copy of the tape,
but when I played it, it had been recorded over.

UPDATE:

On Saturday January 18 we received a new tape from Wingate.
But the aerial "video" taken of the Andros Circle was a simple shot of the picture taken back
in 1969 by Robert Brush.

It is interesting that Andrew Collins also reported that the circles were videotaped in 1971
by a television documentary crew. But that film was never shown according to Collins. The
names of the producers and others on the Wingate film were identical to the names listed
by Collins as the producers, directors, and others who supposedly videotaped the circle in
1971. Thus, it seems that Wingate's film (of the photo) is what Collins referred to.

Like Collins, I too thought that someone else had actually found the circles—but that certainly
does not seem to be the case.

I have bad news about the "Andros Circle".

Here is what Dr. Greg Little says about it:

"The "Andros Circle", however, is a circle of sponge, not stone.

As far as I know, Lora and I are the only people who have ever actually gone to it, as that
one photo that was taken from the air in 1969 was frequently cited as evidence that it was
a standing stone circle. Needless to say, the discovery of sponge was a disappointment.
If it actually had been standing stone, it would have been one of the most important archaeo-
logical discoveries ever made.

There was so much written about the photo that was convoluted, contradictory, wrong, and
made up, that it was the one major thing that made me decide to get directly involved in the
search for Atlantis.

The question about what is under the sponge circles is one others have asked and is also rele-
vant to all of the odd formations off Andros, and there are a lot of these. We first heard the
explanation given to us by the sponge diver and then, oddly, found it that night in a textbook
we found on a shelf in a lodge at Andros where we were staying.

The textbook explained that anything protruding from the bottom, like a stone or pebble, can
become a "coral head" if it is at the right depth and so on. So contours--like small hills-- are
found on the sea bottom, just like on land.  As this head is formed by coral growth on the high
spot, it attracts small creatures like shrimp, lobsters, and so on. The coral also attracts small
fish. The crustaceans living in the head itself, or "under it," actually constantly push rubbish
to the outer edge making a sort of raised circular ridge on the bottom.

The fish swimming around the small coral "bump" gradually move the rubbish into a larger circle.
Then larger fish are attracted by the many smaller fish. These swim in circles around the coral
head which itself grows bigger and bigger over time. Rubbish, sand, droppings and so on are
pushed into wider and wider circles on the bottom.

As these circles form, turtle grass seed or sponge pieces take hold. Depending on the size of
the original head and how long it goes undisturbed, the formation can get huge. The biggest
one is just north of the famous one of the alleged stones--it is over 1000 feet in diameter.
Incredible, really, when you stand in the middle of it and grasp how it formed.

So what we found is that under the sponge was a solid limestone bottom.

Sponge only attaches to stone or something solid. A thin layer of sand was present in all areas
without the sponge. Sponge spores quickly attach to exposed bottom stone so as fish swirl
around in circles, they can expose a circular band of stone. This area was really shallow-
2-3 feet at high tide, so we could walk over the entire thing and see it all easily.

Amazing.

But other underwater formations in slightly deeper water --10-40 feet--all have something else
in them. These formations were also huge and uniform although they are all more "eye-shaped"
or linear. Some of them were 2000-feet and longer.

Always in the center is something--we have found sunken boats, crashed planes, dumped un-
exploded bombs, dumped appliances, gas cylinders, and yes, stone blocks that were really out
of place--although none of them were what we hoped for--stone buildings.

I realized that if a person really wanted to solve these mysteries, with some effort and money,
it could be done."
