I have bad news about the "Andros Circle".

Here is what Dr. Greg Little says about it:

"The "Andros Circle", however, is a circle of sponge, not stone.

As far as I know, Lora and I are the only people who have ever actually gone to it, as that
one photo that was taken from the air in 1969 was frequently cited as evidence that it was
a standing stone circle. Needless to say, the discovery of sponge was a disappointment.
If it actually had been standing stone, it would have been one of the most important archaeo-
logical discoveries ever made.

There was so much written about the photo that was convoluted, contradictory, wrong, and
made up, that it was the one major thing that made me decide to get directly involved in the
search for Atlantis.

The question about what is under the sponge circles is one others have asked and is also rele-
vant to all of the odd formations off Andros, and there are a lot of these. We first heard the
explanation given to us by the sponge diver and then, oddly, found it that night in a textbook
we found on a shelf in a lodge at Andros where we were staying.

The textbook explained that anything protruding from the bottom, like a stone or pebble, can
become a "coral head" if it is at the right depth and so on. So contours--like small hills-- are
found on the sea bottom, just like on land.  As this head is formed by coral growth on the high
spot, it attracts small creatures like shrimp, lobsters, and so on. The coral also attracts small
fish. The crustaceans living in the head itself, or "under it," actually constantly push rubbish
to the outer edge making a sort of raised circular ridge on the bottom.

The fish swimming around the small coral "bump" gradually move the rubbish into a larger circle.
Then larger fish are attracted by the many smaller fish. These swim in circles around the coral
head which itself grows bigger and bigger over time. Rubbish, sand, droppings and so on are
pushed into wider and wider circles on the bottom.

As these circles form, turtle grass seed or sponge pieces take hold. Depending on the size of
the original head and how long it goes undisturbed, the formation can get huge. The biggest
one is just north of the famous one of the alleged stones--it is over 1000 feet in diameter.
Incredible, really, when you stand in the middle of it and grasp how it formed.

So what we found is that under the sponge was a solid limestone bottom.

Sponge only attaches to stone or something solid. A thin layer of sand was present in all areas
without the sponge. Sponge spores quickly attach to exposed bottom stone so as fish swirl
around in circles, they can expose a circular band of stone. This area was really shallow-
2-3 feet at high tide, so we could walk over the entire thing and see it all easily.

Amazing.

But other underwater formations in slightly deeper water --10-40 feet--all have something else
in them. These formations were also huge and uniform although they are all more "eye-shaped"
or linear. Some of them were 2000-feet and longer.

Always in the center is something--we have found sunken boats, crashed planes, dumped un-
exploded bombs, dumped appliances, gas cylinders, and yes, stone blocks that were really out
of place--although none of them were what we hoped for--stone buildings.

I realized that if a person really wanted to solve these mysteries, with some effort and money,
it could be done."
