Tree burns inside out after lightning storm
Posted on Monday, 6 March, 2017

A tree at a cemetery in St Louis, Missouri was left smouldering after it was hit by a bolt of lightning.
The harrowing spectacle, which demonstrates exactly why it is a bad idea to stand next to a tree during a thunderstorm, was filmed by Jim Probst who happened to live nearby.

The scars of the lightning bolt can still be seen on the outside of the tree while the inside continues to glow red hot as a slow-burning fire gradually consumes the center of the trunk.

The footage has since gone viral online with some Internet users likening the burning tree to the portal to another world that appears at the bottom of a tree in the Netflix series Stranger Things.

"Had to be hit by lightning and it's hollow and rotten all the way up," wrote Facebook user Lynn Niemeier. "Burning like a chimney on fire."

In a spooky scene fitting of its graveyard setting, a tree was recorded being consumed by fire from the inside out after a devastating lightning strike.

Lightning setting trees alight is a common occurrence. What’s unusual in this instance is that the strike basically exploded the base of the tree and burnt it up from the inside out. Amazingly, the exterior of the tree appears intact despite the carnage wrought upon its innards.

The tree stands in a graveyard in St Louis, Missouri, very close to the house of Jim Probst, who shot the video. A photograph taken by another local, Thelma Harper, shows the devastating effects of the strike: the hardwood bark bears thick, long scars where it was lashed by the lightning.

The scene is reminiscent of that eerie tree in the hit Netflix show Stranger Things that drew characters into another, hellish, dimension.

Why exactly the tree burned in this manner isn’t yet clear. “Had to be hit by lightning and it’s hollow and rotten all the way up. Burning like a chimney on fire,” speculated Lynn Niemeier on Facebook.

Local news channel WKRG says the the reason for the explosion was “the rapid heating of moisture found in the tree and ground. The water boiled and expanded and eventually caused the tree to explode.”

We’d like to know – what do you think is going on with the burning tree?
