The famed movie director has linked the discovery of bronze age anchors to the legend of Atlantis.
Famously documented by the Greek philosopher Plato, Atlantis was said to be a continent situated in the middle of the Atlantic that was inhabited by a highly advanced and prosperous civilization.

According to legend, the Atlanteans ultimately fell out of favor with the gods and the entire island was submerged beneath the waves. Real-world theories suggest that if Atlantis did exist, it may have been sunk by a tsunami, a sustained period of volcanism or some other ancient disaster.

Whether or not Atlantis was a real place however has long remained a matter of heated debate.

One prominent figure who has long been intrigued by the mystery is filmmaker James Cameron who has been investigating the legend as part of a new TV documentary entitled 'Atlantis Rising'.

During the program, the investigation team made a particularly intriguing discovery in the form of six anchors dating back over 4,000 years. Found just outside the entrance to the Mediterranean, the anchors have been tentatively linked to the existence of Atlantis.

"These anchors could be 3,500 to 4,000 years old and establish a harbor in the Atlantic, where I didn't even dare dream to find anchors," said filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici.

"It's easier to find a needle in a haystack than Bronze Age anchors in the Atlantic."

Whether the anchors really did have something to do with Atlantis however remains unclear.

A clip from the documentary, in which the team examine rock carvings, can be viewed below.

James Cameron links find of bronze-age anchors to lost city of Atlantis

TITANIC director James Cameron thinks he’s found Atlantis. His documentary team has stumbled upon a cluster of six 4000-year-old anchors just outside the entrance to the Mediterranean.

Myth? History? Or just a good storytelling opportunity?

The idea of an advanced ancient civilisation lost to history certainly has eternal appeal.

It’s certainly been a favoured subject among documentary makers.

Now Oscar-winner James Cameron joins them.

His National Geographic series Atlantis Rising goes to air in the United States this weekend.

Suitably, he’s got a tantalising find to pin his narrative upon.

MEGA-MYTH

Is there more to Atlantis than just an ancient fireside tale?

The idea exploded among the modern popular imagination with pseudoscientific books such as Erich von Daniken’s Chariots of the Gods in 1968 and, more recently, the likes of Fingerprints of the Gods by Graham Hancock.

Atlantis has been linked to just about everything: The pyramids were really an astral power station to charge its technology. Its survivors seeded just about every ancient civilisation. It was buried under Antarctica’s ice (or off the Bahamas, or Japan, or just about any mysterious place).

There are more plausible, though equally unproven, theories.

COMET ENCKE: Did it destroy Atlantis? Is it coming back?

It could be a distorted memory of the Black Sea Flood which saw a vast swath of Europe engulfed about 5600BC. Or a memory the Minoan palace vaporised on the island of Santorini erupted, sending tsunamis through the Eastern Mediterranean at some point around 1600BC.

That last one looks particularly enticing.

But the fact remains all we really have is a few throwaway lines included in two moral tales written by the Greek philosopher Plato. Most academics feel this was likely to have been an allegorical warning to the then vibrant city-state of Athens not to turn its back on the gods.

CAMERON’S TWIST

Oceanic explorer Robert Ballard beat Cameron to the Titanic in 1985. Now Cameron’s attempting to go one better.

“We set out to investigate the most interesting theories that argue that there is some kind of history behind the myth of Atlantis,” Cameron says.

Expedition leader Richard Freund (an archaeologist from the University of Hartford) is more ebullent: “This is the world’s most sophisticated and extensive search ever made.”

The plot sounds familiar.

It’s the most “sophisticated and extensive search ever made”. They use ‘cutting edge technology’ to explore a ‘virtual map’ built from Plato’s ancient writings.

While the show travels throughout Greece, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean tracking ‘sightings’ of Atlantis, much is made of the discovery of a cluster of Bronze Age anchors on the Atlantic side of the Strait of Gibraltar — which some believe to be the “Pillars of Hercules’ Plato states the civilisation was ‘beyond’.

DELVE DEEPER: Does a shipwreck contain Atlantis’ mythical metal?

“These anchors could be 3500 to 4000 years old and establish a harbour in the Atlantic, where I didn’t even dare dream to find anchors,” filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici said in a statement. “It’s easier to find a needle in a haystack than Bronze Age anchors in the Atlantic.”

The fun part will be linking them to Plato’s 4th Century BC writings.

ANCHORED IN REALITY?

Plato mentions Atlantis in his works ‘Temaeus’ and ‘Critas’, but provides only an outline sketch of this mysterious civilisation.

He describes it as an island, formed of concentric rings. At its heart was a great city. It’s inhabitants were half-god and half-human. They were rich in resources and mysterious metals. They were proficient seagoers.

The story goes that, through their greed, they upset the great god fo the sea Poseidon. So he got rid of them through enormous earthquakes and floods.

There is one historic event that fits Plato’s tale remarkably well.

It’s the story of the eruption of the volcano Thera (now called Santorini) in 1650BC.

Archaeologists in recent decades have uncovered the remains of an ancient settlement there belonging to the then remarkably advanced Minoan civilisation.

Among the ruins they found a map. It shows a palace on an island in the middle of volcanic caldera.

The fallout of the eruption, and its subsequent tsunamis, are believed to have triggered the collapse of the entire civilisation as it engulfed much of northern Crete.

Into the ruins marched tribes of Greeks - the predecessors of the great nations of Sparta, Corinth and Athens.

So the idea that the disaster that destroyed the Minoans may have somehow wound its way through the centuries down to Plato certainly seems enticing. Though unsubstantiated.

Why James Cameron Decided to Investigate the Legend of the Lost City in Atlantis Rising

Move over, Titanic — James Cameron has another ocean-themed project coming your way.

Executive produced by Oscar-winning Cameron and Emmy-winning filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici, National Geographic’s upcoming investigative documentary, Atlantis Rising, sets out to unravel the mystery of the lost city of Atlantis.

The film tracks a team of archeologists, scientists and historians as they travel throughout the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to search for the true “Atlantean” civilization — and a possible location for the mother city, the lost city itself, using cutting-edge technology and Plato’s ancient writings as a virtual treasure map to lead the way.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal a sneak peek at the documentary, in which Jacobovici travels to the Pillars of Hercules, the ancient name given to a point that flanks the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, to investigate what just might be a startling discovery.

“This legendary diver in these parts, that they nicknamed The Panther, shot this video footage,” Jacobovici tells Cameron via Skype. “When I got images of it at the beginning, I thought: ‘This is a joke.’ ”

“But when I looked at still frame grabs, it looks like an underwater Nuragic [site],” he continues. “It’s big — it’s got pillars, it’s got steps, it’s got circles. It’s the Hollywood version of Atlantis, and it’s supposed to be right here, where we are.”

As for how that scene pans out? Stay tuned to find out — but one thing’s for sure, and it’s that Cameron believes exploring myths — and what we can learn from them — is important.

“That’s how the ruins of Troy were found!” Cameron tells PEOPLE. “With Plato, we have only fragments from Critias and Timaeus, but yet this fragmentary story has intrigued people for the 2,400 years since he wrote it.”

“When I’m not doing my day job as a Hollywood movie guy, I’m doing my other job as an ocean explorer,” he continues. “The payoff is that in the course of searching for Atlantis and exploring the possible sites, we came up with some pretty good evidence that there was in fact a ship-based trading culture outside the so-called Pillars of Hercules, which is the Strait of Gibraltar, just off the coast of Spain. That’s pretty big.”

In the course of the expedition, the investigators discovered six ancient anchors that could date back to the Bronze Age and that together may be the greatest ancient anchor hoard ever found on the Atlantic side of the Strait of Gibraltar.

“The anchors are something that people haven’t seen before,” says Cameron. “Is it proof that Atlantis exists? No, of course not. But it’s very intriguing, because it’s now physical evidence for a hypothesis that’s been out there for a while.”

As for Jacobovici? Well, he’s even more convinced.

“I think a lot of people when they hear the word ‘Atlantis,’ they put it in the same category as alien abduction. That is simply not the case,” he tells PEOPLE. “Somebody wrote this story down, and it’s not just anybody — it was Plato, one of the most famous philosophers in history.”

“You can’t just think of Atlantis as one spot that people argue either existed or didn’t exist,” he adds. “Reading the original text very carefully — and it’s amazing how many times you can read the same pages and not see it — Plato doesn’t say it’s just a spot. He says it’s a civilization. It’s an empire. If thousands of years from now somebody was looking for American civilization, it wouldn’t just be about finding Manhattan.”

“Once we realized that, and started visiting places like Sardinia — I mean, there are 7,000 temples on Sardinia that more or less match Plato’s description of Altantean architecture!” he continues. “I was blown away.”

And looking back, Jacobovici is as hopeful as ever about one day discovering proof of the existence of a mother city.

“I do believe, at the end of the day, that wherever you have an empire, you have a mother city,” he says. “If you have an America, you’ve got a Washington, D.C., you’ve got a New York. If you’ve got a Roman empire, you have a Rome. You don’t have a civilization without a mother city and I believe there is one here.”

“I can’t describe the feeling,” Jacobovici says of filming the documentary. “It’s easier to find a needle in a haystack than it is to find 4,000-year-old anchors in the Atlantic. When the stars all lined up, the archeology and the story combined, it was breathtaking.”

Ultimately, both men agree that at the end of the day, everyone has their own fantasy of what Atlantis was.

“There’s this sort of Disney idea of it that’s come about,” says Cameron. “I certainly don’t think it was ever that, and Plato may have just been doing sort of the Ancient Greek equivalent of science fiction. But wouldn’t it be amazing if we could find that there was actually some substance behind the myth?”

Atlantis Rising premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on the National Geographic Channel.

Wish we would hear more about the six anchors found in the Atlantic dating to 4,000 bc. Talk about a rewrite of history.
