There’s a monster snake on the loose, apparently, and it has already got its own Twitter account.

An enormous snakeskin found in the US state of Maine has caused alarm after police posted the below photo on Facebook.

Westbrook Maine Police Department warned citizens to remain ‘alert’ after the 12ft-long snakeskin was found in the woods next to a riverbank in the city.

Police have taken a sample of what they believe to be snakeskin and are examining it to determine what type of snake it is and see if it is a danger to the public.

Some have speculated the skin was shed by a large snake dubbed ‘Wessie’, after several sightings of a reptile estimated to be 10ft long in the area.

According to WCSH, one report described the snake being “as long as a truck and [a] head the size of a soccer ball.”

Another officer witnessed the snake “eating a large mammal”, believed to be a beaver, on another occasion before it swam off.

However cryptozoologist Bill Brock said he believes that while Wessie is out there, he does not believe the skin belongs to the creature.

He told WMTW: “At best, it is suspect. That thing was laid out in a way that kind of suggests that someone just literally laid it there, and I’m pretty sure that’s how the snakeskin got there, but I do think Wessie is real, and I do think Wessie is out at the Riverbank Park somewhere.”

Westbrook Maine Police Department added: “Around 3pm, Saturday, August 20, a citizen reported finding a shed snake skin along the Presumpscot River near the carry-in boat launch in the area of Riverbank Park.

“Westbrook Police Officers responded, photographed, collected, and tagged the skin which will be examined in attempts to determine what type of snake shed it and what risks this type of snake poses to public safety.

“Until the type of snake is determined and we can assess the safety risk, we caution people who recreate along the Presumpscot River to remain alert, maintain a safe distance from any wildlife, and report any sightings of the snake to the Westbrook Police Department.”

In June, a massive monitor lizard ‘knocking’ at a front door stunned this Thai man.

While this  massive alligator was pulled from a drain in Florida after complaints of a bad smell.

-29-16 at about 0330 hours an Officer on patrol in the area of Riverbank Park observed a large snake on the riverbank in the area of Speirs Street. The snake was eating a large mammal, possibly a beaver (not joking). A second officer arrived and they both watched it swim across the river to the Brown Street side of the Presumpscot River where it disappeared in the thick underbrush. They estimated its length to be at least 10 feet. WPD contacted the Maine Warden Service and they expect that the snake will remain dormant for a few days because it just ate a substantial meal. The snake has been dubbed “Wessie” or the “Presumpscot Python” by locals. We ask the public to be mindful of the snake’s presence in the area and immediately report any sightings so we can remove the animal from the river.

The find has been linked to reports of a particularly large snake nicknamed "Wessie" that has been sighted several times in the area. While it isn't clear whether the skin belongs to that particular snake, if it does then it would corroborate claims that the creature is over 12ft long.

"Westbrook Police Officers responded, photographed, collected, and tagged the skin which will be examined in attempts to determine what type of snake shed it and what risks this type of snake poses to public safety," the department wrote on its Facebook page.

According to cryptozoologist Bill Brock however the snakeskin discovery may be a bit suspect.

"That thing was laid out in a way that kind of suggests that someone just literally laid it there, and I’m pretty sure that’s how the snakeskin got there, but I do think Wessie is real, and I do think Wessie is out at the Riverbank Park somewhere," he said.

Whether officers will be able to get to the bottom of the mystery however remains to be seen.
