1953 sighting of the Houston Batman remains unsolved
November 1, 2012

This is a great fun story about the legend of the Houston Batman. The local news station gathered a collection of experts from all areas to discuss the encountered reported in 1953. Check it out!

‘Houston Batman’ remains mystery decades after three Houstonians’ 1953 encounter with bat-like creature | abc13.com.

It was 2:30am on June 18, 1953 in the Houston Heights. Three neighbors claimed they saw something extraordinary just a few feet from their home.

Hours later, the unearthly encounter was front-page news in the Houston Chronicle.

“It appeared to be a very tall man or manlike figure standing about six and a half feet tall but with bat-like wings attached to his back,” […] “Also seemed to be encased in a halo of glowing light.”

Here is the news report:

What a great story I’d never heard before. What could it have been? If I had to guess, I’d say large bird, maybe owl. People tend to imagine strange features or misinterpret details later on. It appears there is no way to follow up on the details so this one will remain… unsolved.

The Houston Batman, also known as the Houston Horror, was a winged creature reportedly sighted in. The most famous encounter with the beast took place during the early morning hours of June 18, 1953. Given the fact that it was a hot and restless night, twenty three year old housewife Hilda Walker, and her neighbors, fourteen year old Judy Meyer and thirty three year old tool plant inspector Howard Phillips, were sitting on the porch of Walker’s home, located at 118 East Third Street in the city of Houston. AppearanceEdit

The entity was described by a witness as being essentially man like in shape, sporting a pair of bat style wings, dressed in a black, tight-fitting outfit, and surrounded by an eerie, glowing haze. The monstrous form stood about six and a half feet tall and the strange glow engulfing him was yellow in color.
Possible ExplanationsEdit

There are several explanations as to what the creature could be. Theories include:

    An undiscovered species (a Cryptid)
    Extraterrestrial
A hoax (possibly a man in a suit)

Notable EncountersEdit

    Account #1

Several years after he first heard about the exploits of the Batman, a close friend of Gerhard told him about the experience of a number of employees at Houston’s Bellaire Theater, who claimed to have seen a gigantic, helmeted man, crouched down and attempting to hide on the roof of a downtown city building late one night during the 1990s. TriviaEdit

As a former resident of Houston, researcher and author Ken Gerhard made valiant attempts to locate the address on East Third Street where the event took place and discovered that it is no longer in existence. It has seemingly been overtaken by the expansion of the nearby Interstate 10.
