A Penny Dreadful Series Finale Farewell Video From Cast & Crew
A Penny Dreadful series finale farewell video from cast & crew

The critically acclaimed Showtime drama Penny Dreadful has slayed its final demon – last night’s jaw-dropping finale marked the Penny Dreadful series finale of the three-season opus envisioned by creator, writer and executive producer John Logan, it was announced today by Logan and David Nevins, President and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc. Check out a special Penny Dreadful series finale farewell from Logan and the cast in two video clips below! (Spoilers Beware)

This unique mash-up of literary horror has followed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green, in her Golden Globe-nominated role), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) as they’ve worked together, at all costs, to vanquish the evil that relentlessly pursues them.

“I created ‘Penny Dreadful’ to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her. For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series,” said Logan. “From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally – and triumphantly – finding peace as she returns to her faith. To have had fans that have embraced us so passionately has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. This has been a very personal project for me and I will be forever grateful to have worked with the incredible cast led by Eva, Josh and Tim, our amazing Irish crew, and with our wonderful partners at Showtime and Sky.”

“John Logan deftly created a truly beautiful, brilliantly-written, epic drama series that has drawn a passionate fanbase to our network,” said Nevins. “After three fulfilling seasons, John has told the story he set out to tell and brought the series to a close in an incredibly poetic way. It has been an honor to work with him and this amazingly talented cast, and we’re thrilled that we can continue to work with John as he transitions to write and produce his next project for us, ‘Just Kids,’ alongside Patti Smith. Together with our partners at Sky, we celebrate John’s vision and the thrilling finale of ‘Penny Dreadful.’”

Over its three seasons, Penny Dreadful developed an incredibly loyal fanbase, lovingly called “The Dreadfuls,” that have followed and rabidly commented on every twist and turn of the series.

In Penny Dreadful, some of literature’s most famous characters – including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light — came together in Victorian London. Penny Dreadful, was created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator). The ensemble cast was led by Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill) and Eva Green (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Casino Royale). Simon Russell Beale (My Week with Marilyn), Reeve Carney (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Patti LuPone (“American Horror Story”), Billie Piper (“Doctor Who,” “Secret Diary of a Call Girl”), Wes Studi (“Hell On Wheels”) and Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger) also starred.

Penny Dreadful has been honored with three Primetime Emmy nominations and has wonthree BAFTA Awards. Eva Green was recognized for her brilliant work as Vanessa Ives with Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award nominations. Patti LuPone and Helen McCrory also received Critics Choice Award nominations for their work in the series.

A co-production with Showtime and Sky, Penny Dreadful was executive produced by John Logan for Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call The Midwife), both of Neal Street Productions, and Karen Richards (“The Borgias”). The series was shot on location in Dublin, Ireland.

I'm definitely disappointed, though, trying not to be selfish! This was such a great show. I just kind of feel that they didn't get to tell the full story. There were many missed opportunities to optimise some characters.

They definitely didn't make this the horrorshow they set up in the first season. Dracula, was set up one way, via Egyptian clues, they sort of continued that in the second season very weak but, could have pushed that to places we've never seen before.

The Monster was done in a very poetic way but, they really could have paralleled the Vanessa story this season more and had him end up with the rest of the group as well and possibly matched the supernatural aspects of the werewolf and vampires. Plus, finally revealing himself to the rest! Though the solitude ending he had was done in character for this show.

I definitely felt like the show was going to continue with Dr. Heckle and, possibly a partial new cast, depending on which characters story lines where finished! I mean, Invisible Man anybody!?

I was very happy with Dorian Greys ending though!

If this was the ending planned, why not let Wolfman fight Dracula? & Dorian Gray v bride of Frankenstein? & Frankenstein's monster v Dr Jackel? if its your last few steps, burn those bridges! burn! burn!

I never knew it was intended for only three seasons, so it came as quite a shock... but it makes sense to end with Dracula. This was an amazingly written show and I have loved watching all the characters progress in their own story. I will miss Dorian, Vanessa, Ethan, Victor, Sir Malcolm, John and all the other. Farewell and thanks for three great seasons.

Penny Dreadful Not Returning for Season 4, Confirms EP John Logan: 'Vanessa's Struggle Had to End'

By Michael Ausiello / June 20 2016, 7:59 AM PST

The following story contains major spoilers about Sunday’s Penny Dreadful — proceed at your own peril.

What could be worse than Penny Dreadful creator John Logan killing off leading lady Eva Green? Logan killing off the show altogether.

Read it and weep: The Showtime drama will not be returning for a fourth season, meaning that Sunday’s Season 3 finale — which concluded with the death of Green’s long-suffering, demonically tortured heroine — was actually the series finale.

VIDEOSEva Green Reacts to the End of Penny Dreadful: ‘I’m Going to Miss Vanessa’

In the following Q&A with TVLine, Logan and Showtime president David Nevins reveal why and when they made the call to bring down the curtain, defend their decision not to give viewers more of a  heads-up that the end was nigh, and answer this doozy of a question: Was there a contingency plan in place to continue the series without Vanessa Ives?

TVLINE | When did you make the decision that this would, in fact, be the final season?
DAVID NEVINS | I will let John handle that because it was, ultimately, his decision. It was a creative decision about the trajectory of this character.
JOHN LOGAN | [The decision] was made a while ago. The show, to me, has always been about Vanessa Ives and her struggle with faith. I knew, sooner or later, it would get to a point of apotheosis, where she would either accept her God or deny her God. Midway through [Season 2] – so, two years ago — as I was planning a third season, I realized, “Oh, I see exactly where this is heading. She’s going to have that moment, and the only way she can truly have it is at the moment of her death.” So, in my mind, I began shaping the third season thinking about all the characters and how I could lead them to a place that felt like a fitting conclusion. And it was very difficult to do as a writer. I’m deeply attached to these characters. I feel like I created them, even the ones I didn’t, like Victor Frankenstein and the Creature; they’re real parts of me. Penny Dreadful Cancelled Season 4That’s particularly the case with Vanessa Ives. I felt like it was the graceful, perfect way to end her story and therefore the story of all the characters.

TVLINE | So you knew going into Season 3 that this was the final season?
NEVINS | That’s when I found out. I always knew this was not going to be a six- or seven-year show, but it was working really well for us. It was getting richer and deeper with each season. But when John came in to lay out Season 3, he said, “I think I have to end the season with the death of Vanessa Ives.” Then I went through a period of like, “Do I try to talk John out of it? And is there a show beyond her?” It just felt like the creative elements of this show are dependent on John Logan writing [for the character of] Vanessa Ives, and Eva Green playing Vanessa Ives. And I didn’t want to make the show without the creative elements that made it great. So after trying to talk John out of it for a little while, I said, “It’s OK. We can do it this way.” Then the question is, do we sort of warn the audience that this is the end? But, given the trajectory, that would have been really unfair, because people want to be surprised.

TVLINE | So you never considered promoting this as “the final season of Penny Dreadful“?
NEVINS | I considered it. But it seemed like the wrong way to do it. It wasn’t in the spirit of Penny Dreadful. I’m sensitive about it, because I think the show has a really passionate fan base. And [they’re] going to be very emotional.

TVLINE | John, did you consider doing a fourth season without Eva? Because it certainly seemed like Perdita Weeks’ Catriona was being groomed as her successor.
LOGAN | To me, the show was always going to achieve closure with the death of Vanessa. And all the storylines this season were meant to be leaving characters at a place of appropriate and beautiful stasis. So, in the last episode, Dorian Gray is left alone staring at his portrait; Sir Malcolm finds the family he lost with Ethan; Ethan finds the surrogate father he lost with Sir Malcolm; the Creature realizes that he can’t be part of the human family or the human community and he’s left kneeling on a grave, which is, poetically, where he belongs. So it was apparent that this season was leading toward the ending… And along the way, what makes a show interesting is vibrant characters. I loved [Weeks’ character] Catriona.

Penny Dreadful Cancelled Season 4TVLINE | So Mr. Lyle going off to Egypt wasn’t setting up the arrival of the Mummy in a potential Season 4?
LOGAN | [Laughs] No, that was really just to give that character a beautiful ending for a homosexual man in 1892. I love these characters so much. I wanted to give them all fitting endings.

TVLINE | I think fans are going to be bummed that Vanessa was so scarce a presence in these last two episodes. Since you knew going in that this would be the end, why not give us more Eva Green?
LOGAN | It’s akin to the decision of not announcing [Season 3 as the final season]. I believe in the coup de théâtre. I believe audiences want to be surprised. They want to have their breath taken away. I wanted to do a major reveal when you saw Vanessa as the Mother of Evil, per se, when she’s living with Dracula and you see what she’s become. Because she is responsible for this horrible plague that’s killing London. I thought less of her was better to make her appearances much more powerful. And she becomes the Maltese Falcon — that thing they’re all striving toward. It was purely a dramatic decision.

TVLINE | Maybe I’m just having a tough time letting go, but I feel like there is still so much life left in this franchise. I love Eva Green, but I could see the show potentially carrying on without her. John, why weren’t you more eager to keep the show going?
LOGAN | Because Eva Green is my muse for this show. And Vanessa Ives is my muse for this show. Her story had to end exactly as it ended for me. Would I have loved to keep telling her story for 10 years? Yes. But that would’ve been an act of bad faith. Vanessa’s struggle had to end, and it had to end in peace. That’s what the series was about for me. And as much as I love the other characters and the other actors and running this show, the central ticking clock of it was always Vanessa Ives.

TVLINE | When did you tell Eva that this was the end?
LOGAN | Eva and I talked every day on the set. First thing I would do is go sit in her trailer, and we would talk, sometimes for 10 minutes and sometimes for three hours. So she was aware of every permutation of my thought [process].
NEVINS | I can tell you that she knew before I did. [Laughs]
LOGAN | And I continue to have that relationship with her. Of all the Dreadfuls, she is the one I’m most kin to. From the first episode that I wrote, when I begged her to do the show for six months, she has been embedded in my DNA.

TVLINE | Was her reaction, “No, I want to keep going” or was it, “Thank God, I’m exhausted from playing this character”?
LOGAN | It was closer to the latter. [Laughs] Eva’s a true heavyweight. She’d go into the ring as often as I would send her in. But she knew as well as I did that it was the right ending for the character. She just wanted a beautiful ending.
Penny Dreadful Cancelled Season 4NEVINS | I think her performance will go down in history as one of the magnificent performances on television. Ultimately, the thought of trying to continue this iteration of Penny Dreadful without Eva seemed definitely wrong to John and fairly quickly seemed wrong to me, too. I think this is a part that, during the six months of the year that she’s doing it, takes a huge toll on Eva. She lives in it. She is haunted by the devil, and it’s not an easy way to get through life. So it was a relief to her soul that it was going to come to an end. But I think it’s great that we got 27 episodes.

TVLINE | Did Eva’s exhaustion influence the decision to end the series?
LOGAN | No. She has always been incredibly respectful of me and the character.
NEVINS | I think it’s pretty clear that Eva would crawl across broken glass for John Logan.

TVLINE | John, favorite moment from the series?
LOGAN | My personal favorite episode is Eva and Patti LuPone, when they’re off in the cottage in the second season. My relationship with Eva is such that being on the set with her when she was creating this incredible character with that kind of commitment was one of the most flattering and amazing experiences of my life.

TVLINE | What do you think the reaction will be when fans see the “The End” card?
NEVINS | I think they’ll be emotional. And maybe even devastated. But I hope, when they get past that, they’re going to feel satisfied. I think John has done a brilliant job of creating closure. Nobody can say he didn’t end the story on his terms.

The real reason Penny Dreadful was canceled
Jon Ledford @JonLedford

Showtime's horror drama Penny Dreadful dropped its biggest twist during "The Blessed Dark," its season three finale. To much surprise and dismay, we learned that the thriller series was ending, and this abrupt finale was its last episode. While the show is still having its last rites read, let's investigate the potentially spoiler-filled mystery of why it had to end.
Money

Like most TV cancellations, money was likely the main factor in Showtime's decision to give Penny Dreadful the axe. We'll explore other reasons, but things most likely boil down to ratings not justifying costs. It's happened to plenty of other fan favorite shows over the years, including Firefly, Hannibal, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Constantine, Dollhouse, and Almost Human. Despite featuring the likes of Dracula, Dr. Jekyll, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and other public domain characters, the price of bringing this Monster Squad to the screen was probably too much compared to what it was reeling in.
Declining viewership

According to TV Series Finale, this season was only the sixth-highest-rated show out of the 10 other series Showtime filmed for the year (though House of Lies was also canceled). Viewership dropped over five percent compared to last year. Even if Masters of Sex had less viewers than Penny Dreadful overall, its more contemporary setting and lack of special effects mean it's cheaper to produce. Penny Dreadful's cult following just wasn't enough—only around 578,000 people watched the original airing of the series finale.
Showtime can focus on other shows

Of course, the cancellation of Penny Dreadful frees up money. All that Showtime cash used to make those elaborate Victorian sets and awesome special effects can be used somewhere else, like one of the channel's current shows or to help fund something entirely new. We've got our fingers crossed for that long-awaited follow-up to Dexter!
Couldn't continue without Vanessa Ives

Despite all the interesting characters she's met over the past three years, Penny Dreadful is, at its core, a tale about Eva Green's Vanessa Ives. The show ended with her finally finding peace. "I always knew it wasn't going to be a really long-running show—John [Logan] made that clear coming in. As he was laying out what he wanted to do this season," Showtime CEO David Nevin said to Entertainment Weekly. "John came in and said, 'This needs to be the end of Vanessa Ives. I know exactly how I want to end it. And when Vanessa Ives, when that character, is done, I think the show is done.'"

Remember how That '70s Show's final season felt after Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher left? Yeah, we're trying to forget it too. While there are plenty of tales you could tell without her in this dark world, Ives was the focal point of this show, and we couldn't imagine it continuing without her.
Other monsterfests are on the way

The loss of Vanessa Ives leaves Penny Dreadful with its roster of 19th century ghouls, and we'll be seeing a lot more of them soon. Universal Pictures is launching its own set of films featuring the classic movie monsters, starting with Dracula Untold and the 2017 Mummy film. Don't be surprised if a channel like CBS (Showtime is its subsidiary) tries bringing Frank, Drac, and the gang back in their own way to capitalize on Hollywood's resurrection of the Universal Monsters.
Creator John Logan planned it this way

While we've looked at the various reasons why Penny Dreadful was canceled, we're just going to have to go with Logan's explanation. Apparently, he always knew this was how the series would end. "I realized that's where the third season was going to head," Logan told Entertainment Weekly. "It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God."

All of our favorite shows will eventually end—even Game of Thrones and The Simpsons one day. While it stinks that we'll never see Ives involved in plots with Caliban or Dorian Grey again, we're sure we'll see most of these characters in other forms soon enough.

By Gregory Martin, Parent Herald July 13, 07:00 am
TAG Penny Dreadful Season 4, John Logan, Vanessa Ives, Eva Green, CBS, Netflix

The last season of "Penny Dreadful" ended with a cliffhanger. Many are wondering about Vanessa Ive's death, hence, the demand for "Penny Dreadful" Season 4. Unfortunately, executive producer John Logan stated that season 4 is impossible. Is he done with the season?

'Penny Dreadful' Season 4 Is Not Happening

"Penny Dreadful" season 4 has been cancelled. There are no more seasons coming up after the unanswered finale in season 3. According to Movie News Guide, John Logan is firm on his stand about not pushing "Penny Dreadful" further.

Initially, "Penny Dreadful" was not meant to run beyond six to seven years and per Logan "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 is just impossible. However, fans have been clamoring for it, especially that the management had not announced it earlier that season 3 will be the last. They felt that the show was ended abruptly.

'Penny Dreadful' Fans Petition For The Show's Return

Per Master Herald, there are two petitions for "Penny Dreadful." The first petition is calling Netflix to rescue the series and pursue "Penny Dreadful" Season 4. Meanwhile, the second petition is asking CBS and John Logan to continue the series for another season because they want a proper ending.

Unfortunately, the future of the show is bleak especially that Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) died last season. "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 ended with Vanessa requesting Ethan Chandler (Josh Harnett) to pull the trigger and kill her to end her miseries. Her death means that she is free from Dracula and that she surrendered her soul to God.

'Penny Dreadful' Spinoff To Continue The Series

Despite Ives' death, fans believe that there are still too many plots to explore. In addition, they wanted to understand why Ives' opted to die.

There are rumors that a "Penny Dreadful" spinoff will address this question. Unfortunately, fans should still take these reports with a grain of salt as John Logan has already spoken up about his disposition regarding the series.

What do you think, will the petition for "Penny Dreadful" Season 4 be granted? Do you believe that a spinoff would be good enough to answer fans questions about the show share your thoughts in the comment section below.
