Has Marvel Found Their Captain Marvel Star?
Silas LesnickJun 01, 2016

Will Brie Larson be the Captain Marvel star? A new report suggests that the recent Academy Award winner is the frontrunner to play Carol Danvers.
Recent Academy Award winner Brie Larson is reportedly in talks to be the Captain Marvel star!

Has Marvel Studios found its Captain Marvel star? Variety is reporting that recent Academy Award winner Brie Larson has entered early talks to play Carol Danvers and that she is the current frontrunner for the role.

In the regular Marvel Comics continuity, Carol Danvers made her first appearance in 1968’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #13. A Security Chief in the US air force, Danvers would later be transformed  into the superhero Ms. Marvel following an explosion involving Kree technology. More recently, Danvers took on the identity of Captain Marvel after being “promoted” to the moniker of the former Kree superhero.

Little is known regarding Marvel’s specific plans for Captain Marvel outside of the fact that the film will feature the Danvers version of the character. It was confirmed last year that a Captain Marvel cameo was, at one point, part of the script for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that the decision was ultimately made not to rush her appearance. It was also recently reported that Captain Marvel will make her debut in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, which is set to begin production in November. The first part of Infinity War is scheduled to hit the big screen May 4, 2018 with the second half following on May 3, 2019. Between those two films will be Captain Marvel, which arrives March 8, 2019.

Brie Larson is no stranger to comic book adaptations. She played Envy Adams in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Following her Oscar win for last year’s Room, Larson is headed to adventure as part of the cast of next March’s Kong: Skull Island.

Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are scripting Captain Marvel, which does not yet have a director attached.

What do you think of Brie Larson as the potential Captain Marvel star? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Captain Marvel’ Movie: What We Know So Far

What do we know about Marvel’s first female-led superhero film Captain Marvel? As it turns out, not a whole lot. But that’s set to change sometime this summer — although Marvel chief Kevin Feige is staying coy about any Captain Marvel news at the moment. “I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer,” he told Fandango in early April. While Feige is being vague about when they’ll be dropping news, the expectation is that the film will be unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con which happens in July. For now, here’s what we know.
1. It’s set to arrive in 2019, and she’ll likely be in Avengers: Infinity War

Captain Marvel was previously scheduled for a summer 2018 release date when Marvel released their phase three timeline, but it has now been pushed back a year to March 8, 2019. This would place the film in-between the two-part Avengers: Infinity War, and less than two months before Part 2. The placement also suggests that Captain Marvel will appear in Infinity Wars Part 2 if she’s not introduced in Infinity Wars Part 1 as a lead up to the standalone. As Cinema Blend notes, Captain Marvel will now be the first Marvel film of 2019 and will hopefully set the tone for the year to come.

2. It’s written by two talented female screenwriters

You probably don’t know Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman by name, but you definitely know their films. LeFauve’s writing credits include Pixar’s Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, while Perlman co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy and acted as a script doctor for Thor. Both screenwriters have a spate of films in the works and are among some of the hottest female writers in Hollywood. For Marvel’s first female-led film, which is also likely to have a female director, it’s a breath of fresh air that the film will benefit from a creative team composed mostly of women.

3. At least one casting rumor might be on the money
Emily Blunt - Edge of Tomorrow

On a live chat with readers, Jeff Snieder of The Wrap said that he had received his first concrete tip about the Captain Marvel’s casting, but according to Yahoo! could only give cryptic hints for legal reasons. “There was a rumour about an actress being up for it; an already existing rumour, that’s not new,” he said. “I’ve definitely heard there’s some truth to that rumour.” If you believe the hottest rumor about Captain Marvel’s casting, that actress is Emily Blunt. Adding to the mystery, Snieder said that “there’s a director with the same first name who has also been eyed.”

4. Kevin Feige and Jeremy Latcham pay attention to rumors and their responses

Here’s something interesting that Feige and Latcham revealed in October: they pay close attention to what Marvel fans are saying online. In response to the various Captain Marvel casting rumors out there, Moviepilot reported Latcham as saying, “We always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in,” but Feige added, “When a cast list comes out, we look at it!” Latcham then revealed something that might represent a big reason for Marvel’s success. “We read [the rumors], we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like. Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right.” Even if they don’t ultimately side with fans, the fact that they’re doing their homework to study what fans like has got to be one reason for their sustained success.

5. Captain Marvel had a cameo at one point in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Back in September, Feige and Avengers producer Latcham answered questions at an event about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Slash Film reported some of the more interesting tidbits. Feige explains, “It was in the script at one point, it might have been one draft… And we shot a plate and thought we may add her in there.” But it ultimately didn’t fit he says. “The truth is it just didn’t seem appropriate to have this new person in a new costume come out of nowhere at the end of this story. It would have been a disservice to, what by the time the movie was coming out, a character people already knew was coming anyway.”
