This forgotten abandoned city has been lying under 130 feet of water for over 50 years

Sitting almost 150 feet below the water’s surface lies what was once a thriving city full of bustling people milling through paved roads to ornate temples, houses, and gardens. Forgotten for half a century, the Lion City has recently been rediscovered by curious divers… and what they found is nothing short of incredible.

The city of Shi Cheng, once a hub of commerce and politics in the Chinese provence of Zhejiang, was built in 1959, but when the Chinese government elected to built a new hydropower station, a dam went up and the Lion City was slowly flooded. In all, 27 towns, 1,377 villages, almost 50,000 acres of farmland, and two ancient towns were flooded. 53 years later, Zhejiang is now known to most as Qiandao Lake, a shimmering blue body of water that sits on 573 square km of land… and few know of the amazing structures that lie beneath.

Divers have now rediscovered the amazing underwater city, and have snapped some of the eeriest photographs you’ve ever seen. But what’s even better than the pictures? The diving company is very soon going to be offering their own tours of the real life Atlantis!

Check out the stunning photos of the submerged Lion City below.

Bit of a nitpick here, but your information is somewhat incorrect. Zhejiang Province is still very much in existence, one of the largest and wealthiest in all of China as a matter of fact. Shicheng (狮城) was a very important town in Zhejiang Province for several hundred years before the government decided to dam up the river to create Qiandao Lake (千島湖), literally "Thousand Island Lake", 55 years ago.
