Position of Book Review Editor(s) for the American Journal of Archaeology

The Book Review Editor of the AJA receives books for review directly from the publishers, decides which books should be reviewed, invites reviewers, edits the reviews, and submits reviews for each issue to the Director of Publishing. Final copy editing is done by the AJA Editor.

AJA publishes between 20 and 25 book reviews, with a limit of 25,000 words, in each quarterly issue.

The term of the new Book Review Editor will begin formally on January 1, 2017, with a period of transition from July through December 2016 when the new Editor will overlap with the old Editors.

The Book Review Editor serves at the pleasure of the AJA Editor-in-Chief for a term of three years, which may be renewed. The position of Book Review Editor has often been held jointly by two people. The Book Review Editor receives a quarterly stipend from the AIA. Some additional support (student assistant, office space, mailing costs) is expected from the Book Review Editor’s home institution.

The qualifications for this position include:

A record of publication in a field of the art and archaeology of ancient Europe and the Mediterranean world from prehistoric to Late Antique times.
Strong writing skills and editorial experience.
Strong interest in academic publishing and the mission of the AJA.

Applicants should send, to jcarter@tulane.edu, the following:

Cover letter expressing interest in the position and summarizing qualifications.
    Curriculum vitae.
Names and contact information of three recommenders.

For further information, please contact Jane Carter (incoming Editor-in-Chief) at jcarter@tulane.edu.

Review of applications will begin March 15, 2016 and will continue until the position is filled.

Updated Books Received

Of the titles published in the AJA lists of books received, those below are still available for review.

A full listing of books received since 2003 (volume 107) can be found at http://www.ajaonline.org/books-received. Lists in previous volumes are available by issue as downloadable pdfs on JSTOR.

The AJA Book Review Editors are always seeking to increase our cadre of reviewers; those who wish to become reviewers should contact the Book Review Editors directly (bookreviews@aia.bu.edu) and provide an up-to-date curriculum vitae that includes credentials (generally a completed Ph.D. degree or equivalent professional experience and published research) and a list of relevant publications, as well as a statement of research interests.
