Ghost ships' baffle authorities in Japan

Almost a dozen vessels have been washed ashore in recent weeks with not a single surviving crew member.
The mysterious ships, which started to show up along the coast of Japan back in October, have been the subject of an ongoing investigation with officials desperate to unravel their secrets.

To date 11 ships have turned up, some showing signs of damage and each with its entire crew found deceased. Some of the vessels also appeared to have been adrift for quite some time.

One possibility is that the boats are from North Korea - a theory backed up by the discovery of Korean writing on both the vessels themselves and on the clothing worn by the crew.

Some have suggested that the vessels may have been fishing boats that had become lost at sea.

Appearance of ‘ghost ships’ off coast leaves Japanese puzzled
AFP AND NETWORK WRITERS NEWS CORP AUSTRALIA NETWORK NOVEMBER 28, 2015 12:52AM

Maritime mystery ... Coast guard officials investigate a wooden boat at the Fukui port in Sakai city in Fukui prefecture, western Japan after the ship was found drifting off the coast. Picture: AFP
JAPAN is investigating nearly a dozen ‘ghost ships’ recently found drifting off the country’s coastline, some with decaying bodies aboard, officials said on Friday.

At least 11 cases involving wooden boats — some badly damaged — with 20 bodies on board have been reported during October and November, a coastguard spokesman said.

Place of origin ... North Korean writing was visible on the boats as well as clothes left inside the vessels. Picture: AFP
Many of the boats have been towed to Japanese ports, but the bodies are yet to be identified, he said, adding that investigations were ongoing.

On Tuesday, one of the boats was pulled ashore at Fukui port after three sets of remains were found inside when coastguard personnel spotted it some 100 kilometres offshore in the Sea of Japan, private TV channel Tokyo Broadcasting System reported. TBS said the remains were badly decomposed and partially skeletonised.

Escape attempt ... There has been speculation that the boats were trying to flee Kim-Jong-un’s oppressive rule. Picture: AFP
Japanese media has speculated the boats may came from North Korea, with public TV broadcaster NHK saying Korean writing was visible on the boats as well as clothes left inside the vessels.

Experts suspect the vessels are fishing boats from North Korea as the impoverished state prone to poor harvests is trying to expand its fishing industry to bolster food security, NHK said.

But a number of North Korean fishing boats have been lost due to a lack of modern equipment, including the Global Positioning System capability, it added.

Other media have speculated that the boats were trying to flee Kim-Jong-un’s oppressive rule and got caught in a storm.

Amazing the lengths people will go to to escape communism/socialism, even dying to do so. Let's not forget that.

I think it is also very likely that the boats are coming from North Korea. The waters betweens North- and South Korea are one of the best controlled areas in the world. And when they arrive in China, they are also sent back to North Korea which results in the death sentence. So an escape right to Japan seems to be a a good option, but there is a big distance about 1.000km and there are also very dangerous areas. What concourns me is the fact, that the Japanese government is still investigating the case, though it should be clear what happened.

Communism, feudalism, socialism - all don't work due to greed and other human flaws. There's always one top dog. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely. We should never forget that.

There was a 1955 or so Japanese horror film called The H-Man, and that was how it started. Not your typical Japanese man-in-a-rubber-suit movie.

If you liked the series, YouTube has an 8 part (or so) documentary on it. From the animation, to the music and so forth, it's worth the watch.
