SPENCER PERRY NOV 24, 2015

Doctor Strange cast officially confirmed

Despite set photos popping up online a few weeks ago, Marvel Studios has now announced that production has officially begun on the upcoming Doctor Strange and confirmed the film’s cast. Production on the film is currently set up in London with additional plans to shoot in New York and Hong Kong.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the title hero in the film and is joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Stuhlbarg, with Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. Other cast members previously reported to be in the film include Scott Adkins and Amy Landecker.

Scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange is scripted by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers) and directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil). Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

Director Scott Derrickson’s creative team also includes director of photography Ben Davis, B.S.C. (Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy); production designer Charles Wood (Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy); costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy); editors Wyatt Smith (Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World) and Sabrina Plisco, ACE; and visuals effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy).

Chiwetel Ejiofor featured in latest Doctor Strange set photos

Yesterday, a video from the set of Marvel’s Doctor Strange popped up online, featuring not only star Benedict Cumberbatch but a mysterious hooded figure walking around in the shots as well. Now, new set photos have debuted online at The Kathmandu Post (via CBM) revealing that the hooded figure in question was Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo and giving us out first look at the Academy Award nominee on the set. You can check out one of the photos below and see even more by clicking here.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Mordo, like Stephen Strange, was a student of The Ancient One with comparal magical abilities. The pair first faced off when Mordo plotted to kill his teacher, which lead to Strange taking up the mystical arts. Mordo has gone on to become a recurring villain against Strange in the years since. It was initially reported when Ejiofor was cast that the film’s version of Mordo would not be totally evil in the film, but rather an amalgamation of several characters in the Strange canon, meaning he could potentially begin as an ally and gradually turn to evil.

Scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange is scripted by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson. It is said to follow the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Also attached to star in Doctor Strange is Rachel McAdams as the female lead, Michael Stuhlbarg as Doctor Nicodemus West, and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. “Hannibal” and Rogue One star Mads Mikkelsen is also in talks for the villain role of the film, which remains a mystery.

Although no official Doctor Strange artwork has yet been revealed, fans attending the recent D23 Expo in Anaheim, California were treated to a concept art sizzle reel, teasing the look of the “Phase Three” entry.
