'Thermal anomalies' found in Khufu pyramid

A new scan of the Khufu pyramid has turned up possible evidence of a hidden chamber within its walls.
Researchers who have been conducting thermal scans of the pyramids as part of a new effort to locate hidden chambers have revealed that they may have discovered something of interest within the largest of the three pyramids at Giza.

According to a statement by Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities, archaeologists have identified "thermal anomalies" within the pyramid's walls - something that could indicate the presence of a hidden room that has been sealed off for thousands of years.

"It’s always interesting to hear new discoveries at Giza, which has a huge significance in the public imagination," said Egyptology lecturer Richard Enmarch from the University of Liverpool.

"It's such a huge structure - there is no end to exotic theories behind it."

Despite the excitement surrounding the find however experts have been keen to emphasize that there could be other explanations for the anomalous readings.

"A void could be one reason, but it's not necessarily the most probable," said Enmarch. "It could also be explained by quality of the stones, whether the stones were cracked and the air flow was able to travel around."

With any luck we'll hear more about this discovery over the coming weeks.

Those damn Decepticons. They tore the pyramid to shreds. Makes one wonder, in how many different movies has Giza appeared through the years?

The Long, Strange History of the Pyramids as
The Granaries of Joseph

http://www.jasoncolavito.com/blog/the-long-strange-history-of-the-pyramids-as-the-granaries-of-joseph

I'm a fan of this blog, and thought this was interesting. I like knowing the why behind odd beliefs, and Colavito tracks the origin of the idea of the pyramids as Joseph's granaries as much as possible.

I remember hearing it when I was a kid at the Catholic Sunday school I went to and the Evangelical school I went to. No idea how common it is.

In Photos: Inside Egypt’s Great Pyramids

New scanning research has revealed so-called thermal anomalies in Egypt's Great Pyramid of Khufu, suggesting a space that could be a tomb within the 4,500-year-old pyramid.

Strange findings

Thermal imaging of the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza has revealed anomalies (variations in temperature) on the lower east side as well as the upper part of the pyramid. Additional thermal anomalies have been detected at the pyramid of Khafre as well as the Red and Bent Pyramids at Dahshur.

This image shows one of the spots on the Great Pyramid where an anomaly was detected. The work is being carried out by the Scan Pyramid project. (Image courtesy Scan Pyramids.)

 Various possibilities
Scan Pyramids project, Various possibilities

The thermal scan shows that the temperature of the area is elevated by a few degrees (note the scale on the right). Researchers say that this could be caused by many things, including internal air currents, differences in the materials used or by an opening behind the wall. (Image courtesy Scan Pyramids.)

 Studying images
Scan Pyramids project, anomalies

The Scan Pyramids project involves contributors from universities, private companies as well as the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities. They are running thermal and radiography scans in order to learn more about the pyramids. They are also creating a 3D model of them. The pyramid of Khafre can be seen in the foreground in this image.  Experts debate
Khufu, king's chamber

This image shows scanning work being done within the "king's chamber" at the Great Pyramid. The king's chamber contains a badly damaged sarcophagus that many archaeologists believe was used to bury Khufu. However some archaeologists believe that Khufu was not buried here and that his true burial place remains hidden within the pyramid, awaiting discovery.  Misleading names
queen's chamber, khufu

This image shows scanning work being done in the Great Pyramid's "queen's chamber." Despite the royal name, there is no evidence that a queen was buried in the chamber, which contains two shafts that go up into the pyramid. Robots have gone up the shafts over the past two decades, revealing doors with copper handles. Archaeologist Zahi Hawass told Live Science in 2013 that he believes that these shafts lead to Khufu's actual burial chamber. (Credit: © www.HIP.Institute / Philippe Bourseiller.)
