Courtesy Matthew Champion, Norfolk and Suffolk Medieval Graffiti Surveys

Don't miss September/October 2015's "Letter From England," by journalist Kate Ravilious, which takes us to several medieval churches in eastern England where archaeologists have discovered thousands of examples of medieval graffiti. Long hidden in plain sight since they were inscribed on church walls some 700 years ago by ordinary worshippers, these crosses, floral designs, and even ships are changing how we understand spirituality in medieval England. At a time when most were illiterate, it seems making graffiti was an approved way for the common people to express their faith.
