Doggerland, as it was known, was some 100,000 square miles in area and home to tens of thousands of stone-age families living it was is believed could have been a prehistoric centre of Europe.

Rising seas took the community's homes around 7,500 years ago, but now thanks to specialist 4D technology, archaeologists plan to research how life was on the vast lost region for around 6.000 years before it became part of the ocean.

Professor Vince Gaffney from the University of Bradford, who is coordinating a team of investigators, said: "The only populated lands on earth that have not yet been explored in any depth are those which have been lost underneath the sea.

"This project will develop technologies and methodologies that archaeologists around the world can use to explore similar landscapes including those around the Americas."

The ancient land became gradually submerged by melting ice caps after the last ice age between 18,000 BC and 5,500 BC.

It first became an island of 140 miles by 100 by 6,500BC, becoming totally covered within 1,000 years.

The only populated lands on earth that have not yet been explored in any depth are those which have been lost underneath the sea

Professor Vince Gaffney from the University of Bradford

However, it was discovered three years ago by oil company divers working for researcher at the University of St Andrews.

It was found to have been occupied during the Mesolithic period.

The team are hoping to find evidence of the flint tools that were used plus the animals and plants that would have been on the land.

Researcher Dr Simon Fitch said: "This project offers the potential to explore an extensive European submerged landscape and a former heartland of the Mesolithic period.

"The revolutionary data gathered will provide new insights into the life and territories of people during this time and revolutionise our archaeological understanding of this period."

Once discovered, climatologists, archaeologists and geophysicists mapped out the formerly occupied land across two sunken valleys stretching from Scotland to Denmark.

They now intend making a new map showing how the terrain was and samples will be taken from the sea of the sediment.

The project is being funded through a £1.8million grant from the European Research Council.

i think this man should discuss things with his colleague anthony harding. if this statement was true then the largest bronze age structure in europe should not have been discovered by western science only in 2005. you can see it plainly from the main hiway.

http://www.academia.edu/1255464/Corneşti-Iarcuri_a_Bronze_Age_town_in_the_Romanian_Banat

this place is 25% bigger than rome [5000 acres] and dates from the trojan war.

the banat region was no better known than the bottom of the sea.
