‘Fear The Walking Dead’: What Nefarious Plan Does The Military Have For Episode 4?
Rachel Tsoumbakos

As we approach the second half of Season 1 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead the military has arrived, much to Travis’ (played by Cliff Curtis) delight. But how much of a help with the military be in a show where fans know the outcome and it certainly doesn’t involve a large amount of military?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about season 1 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. If you have not watched all available episodes, please proceed with caution.

For many — Travis Manawa being one of them — the military are the peacekeepers, the ones who fix the most dire of problems. However, as fellow character, Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) pointed out, “Men do these things not because of evil. They do evil things because of fear.” And if the military in Fear The Walking Dead is faced with the fear of the unknown or the fear of being overrun, then this is when it might not be safe to place your trust in the authorities. And Daniel should know, after all he immigrated from El Salvador to the U.S. to escape the civil war in his home country, so his experience with the military when things go wrong is probably more knowledgeable than what Travis has picked up from being a school teacher.

In a recent interview Mercedes Mason (who plays Ofelia Salazar) did with MTV, she notes that at this point in Fear The Walking Dead, the three families (Travis’ two families and the Salazar’s) are, effectively, quarantined now into a military safe zone. Although, how safe this zone will turn out is be is anyone’s guess. And, even this early into the quarantine, one of the teaser clips for Episode 4 (entitled “Not Fade Away”) of Fear The Walking Dead already shows Madison (Kim Dickens) sneaking out of the safe zone.

The military quarantine is designed to clear the houses of the infected and, therefore, make the area “safe.” This indicates that perhaps the authorities in Fear The Walking Dead don’t even know that everyone is infected yet. If they did, they would know that just by clearing an area of the infected does not make it safe, it just makes it safe until someone dies.

MTV also pointed out that the “military’s nefarious plans will (mostly) be revealed next Sunday” on Fear The Walking Dead, leading fans to speculate on just how bad it will get for these three families before the Season 1 finale. Mercedes Mason also points out there will be some discussion over what the military will do with them.

“We don’t know if they’re going to separate us. Initially, in society, you’re taught that the police, the military — they’re there to help, and to garner some sort of security. But we start finding out something quite different.”

With speculation by fans that Griselda Salazar (Patricia Reyes Spíndola) could either die or be taken away for treatment because of her broken ankle, perhaps this is what Mercedes is making a reference to? Only time will tell.

You can view the Episode 4 teaser video of Madison escaping the safe zone in Fear The Walking Dead below:

Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC with Episode 4 (“Not Fade Away”) on Sunday, September 20, 2015.

What do you think, should the families stay and trust the military like Travis wants to, or try to sneak out and flee to the desert like they had originally planned? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below!
