Girl, 16, run over and killed by four cars and a bus on her way to college on road with no lights

By Lincolnshire Echo  |  Posted: July 23, 2015

A coroner will ask for lighting to be installed on a Lincolnshire road after a teenager was killed in a horrific accident.

Jessica Dunning, 16, was crossing a busy road to reach a bus stop on her way to Lincoln College when she was hit by a car at 7am on a dark winter morning.

The driver of a Mazda MX5 told an inquest into her death that he did not see the teenager.

And the drivers of the vehicles travelling behind him also failed to see her and ran over her body.

Central Lincolnshire coroner Stuart Fisher is now working with Lincolnshire County Council asking for lights to be installed along the A158 Burgh Road in Skegness where Jessica died.

Speaking at the inquest, which was held at Spilsby Coroner's Court, Mr Fisher said: "I propose to ask the county council to install lights to the west of South View for the safety of pedestrians and in line with a new holiday park being built in the area."

Jessica, of South View Caravan Park in the town, who was described by her father as a "genuine, nice and trustworthy girl", was on her way to college on the morning of December 17 last year.

The driver of the Mazda, Peter Whitfield, told the inquest about the aftermath of the tragedy.

He said: "It was so dark. There was no street lighting. There was a bump and I thought it was an animal.

"I immediately stopped. A man came and told me to go back to the car and an ambulance came."

The inquest heard that Jessica would not have survived the head injury she suffered after the collision with the Mazda.

As she lay in the road injured, she was then run over by three other cars and a double decker bus.

The drivers of another MX5, a Citroen C3, a Ford Focus and the bus that were involved were also unaware what had happened until they pulled over.

A statement by from Jessica's dad Ben, who is the complex manager at the holiday park, was read out by senior coroner for central Lincolnshire Stuart Fisher.

He said: "She was a genuine, nice and trustworthy girl. She had her whole life to look forward to and we will all miss her. This has left a great hole in our lives."

After the accident, dozens of tributes were left on social media and at the scene for the teenager.

She was described as a 'gorgeous angel'.
