Explore superpowers of the ancient world with new MOOC

GlennGodenho-3w

Explore the superpowers of the ancient world by signing up for new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology (ACE).

Dr Glenn Godenho, a Lecturer in Egyptology, developing the four week course along with e-learning’s Matt O’Rourke, Rob Lindsay, Vaiva Adamonyte, and others. Entitled Superpowers of the Ancient World: the Near East, it will deliver a rounded view of the world’s first international age 3,500 years ago, between 1500 and 1200 BCE.

This is a particular area of expertise for the University, and the course features a variety of Glenn’s colleagues from ACE, as well as the Department of Politics.

The free online course, delivered by University partners, FutureLearn, focuses on shifting relationships between Egyptian, Mitannian (based in what is now north Syria) and Hittite (based in ancient Turkey) superpowers, and the city states of the Syria-Palestinian lands that lay between them.

It will also introduce participants to archaeological objects housed in important North West collections, including the University’s own Garstang Museum of Archaeology and Liverpool’s World Museum.

Dr Godenho said: “Having taught a variety of Egyptological subjects to University students, school groups, and members of the public, I know that there is currently lot of interest in this particular theme. Sure enough, we received over 2000 registrations within the first week of the trailer going live.

“My colleagues in ACE and elearning have been very enthusiastic about the project, and with their involvement, this is shaping up to be a really nice looking course. So come and join us as we make sense of how the ancient cultures struggled with each other to become the greatest superpower of the ancient Near East.”

Superpowers of the Ancient World: the Near East is for anyone interested in archaeology and ancient history. Previous study in archaeology is not necessary. The course starts on September 28. To sign up for free, please visit: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/superpowers-near-east/

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. The smallest act of kindness can be the greatest thing in the world.
