Update Number 359

June 27, 2015

********************************************

Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), announces the following key breaking news in this Official Dark Shadows News Online Update "bulletin."

**** DS’ ROBERT COBERT RECEIVES SPECIAL AWARD

**** TODAY:  DARK SHADOWS’ 49TH ANNIVERSARY

**** DARK SHADOWS FESTIVAL 50 YEAR CELEBRATION ONE YEAR FROM NOW

**** ROBERT COBERT – DS MUSIC COMPOSER – HONORED

SG Online Update #357 (5-1-15) and the new Triple SG #124-#125-#126 Print Newsletter (published May 2015) both announced Bob would receive the Saturn Awards’ “Lifetime Achievement Award,” recognizing his 70+-year career “as an accomplished musician, composer, musical director and arranger.”

The ceremony was held at the legendary Castaway Starlight Ballroom in the hills high above Burbank, CA the evening of Thursday-6-25-15. The presentation was the first award given at the 41st Annual Saturn Awards by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. DS’ DAVID SELBY (Quentin) and KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT (Josette) presented the award to Bob.

Joining Bob at his table for the dinner and ceremony were David and his wife Chip, Kathryn and guest Michael Alden, Jim Pierson (Dan Curtis Productions, DS Festival Director), Marcy Robin (ShadowGram Editor/Publisher, DS Festival Co-Founder/Staff Member), Lance Alspaugh (Vintage Theatres), Ansel Faraj (Filmmaker/Director), and Nathan Wilson (Actor)

The Saturn Awards honor a wide range of genre categories in theatrical and TV movies, network/syndicated/cable TV programming, DVD/Blu-Ray releases, and more. Multiple specific categories include acting, directing, writing, production design, costume design, makeup, visual/special effects, live stage production, and others. The Academy also salutes the contributions of noteworthy individuals – such as the “creative musical genius,” Robert “Bob” Cobert.

In presenting Bob’s award, Kathryn noted her character had her own distinctive “Josette’s Theme.” David also pointed out that his character had his own “Grammy-nominated” song, “Quentin’s Theme.” Each of these signature tunes (and lyrics for “Quentin’s Theme”) was composed by Bob.

In fact, over the years, “Quentin’s Theme” has had many vocal and instrumental cover versions recorded and performed by various singers and orchestras. The “performance rights licensing agency” BMI – Broadcast Music Incorporated – recognized Bob when the song received more than 1 million radio plays.

Onstage, David hummed a few bars of “Quentin’s Theme.” He and Kathryn also briefly described DS, then introduced a video with clips and still photos highlighting Bob’s great range of musical creations from 1956-2005. Bob composed all of DS’ music themes and cues as well as virtually all the music for DS creator DAN CURTIS’ feature films and TV movies/series/anthologies. His score for Dan’s acclaimed monumental miniseries WAR & REMEMBRANCE brought Bob a 1988 Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He also wrote TV game show themes and scored dozens of theatrical and TV movies, TV series, and more.

After receiving the statue award, Bob – with his usual delightfully open, uninhibited zest – spoke about his life: growing up in Brooklyn; playing saxophone at age 18 in the band at a NYC nightclub; going to Julliard and Columbia, and more. When he casually mentioned he is 90 years old ((91 on Oct. 26, 2015)), the audience of 1000+ people audibly gasped and applauded spontaneously. With the twinkle of life in his eye and his bright smile, Bob thanked the Academy and everyone for the honor.

Also presented at the ceremony was the 3rd annual Dan Curtis Legacy Award, named for
“a true master of genre TV and quality programming.” It was given to Carlton Cuse, “one of the most successful writers-producers in television.” He currently is showrunner/writer for 4 series: “Bates Motel,” “The Strain,” “The Returned,” and the upcoming “Colony.” He also was writer/producer for the series “Lost.”

The next ShadowGram Official DS Published Newsletter – SG #127 – will spotlight Bob and the awards ceremony with photos and more details.

**** DS: YEAR #49 TODAY – ORIGINAL DAYTIME SERIES DEBUTED (6-27-66)

DS Episode #1 – Victoria Winters’ arrival by train at Collinsport Station – premiered on ABC-TV the afternoon of Monday, June 27, 1966. Its early storylines covered her acclimation to the “unusual” Collins family, the citizens of Collinsport, and encounters with many of their secrets, mysteries, and ambitions. Gradually she began to discover elements of the “unexplained” at Collinwood…  And then a surprising “cousin from England” knocked on the door of “The Great House of Collinwood” on April 14, 1967.

**** DARK SHADOWS FESTIVAL 50 YEAR CELEBRATION ONE YEAR FROM NOW

ShadowGram Online Update #352 (3-29-15) premiere-announced initial information for next year’s commemorative DS 50th Anniversary Celebration, presented by the Dark Shadows Festival/Dark Shadows Official Fan Club. It will be held for the 50th Year weekend, Friday-Sunday, June 24-26, 2016.

Weekend activities will be at the Doubletree Hotel, Tarrytown, NY (25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan on the eastern shore of the Hudson River). On June 24, attendees can tour nearby Lyndhurst Estate, the historic mansion and grounds used as location filming sites for both of the original theatrical movies, HOUSE OF DS (1970) and NIGHT OF DS (1971).

Over the year ahead leading up to this milestone occasion, ShadowGram Online Updates and the ShadowGram Published Newsletters will premiere-announce and detail our expected DS cast/crew guests, planned programming, and special features.

As noted by a premiere announcement in SG Update #352 (March 29, 2015), the Doubletree Hotel will offer discount-rate sleeping rooms for Fest attendees.

PLEASE NOTE: This reduced rate – and the specific code necessary to secure the rate – will be premiere-announced in an upcoming SG Update within a few days. Please wait for that ShadowGram announcement in order to use the special code.

As we approach this special event, ShadowGram will announce attending-membership ticket prices and other information and news. The Fest later will send out a general postal-mailing to everyone on the Fest’s postal-mailing list, with a descriptive flyer, membership form, and other information.
