Jurassic World dinosaurs savaged by experts

Palaeontologists have been quick to point out the flaws in this summer's follow-up to Jurassic Park.
While the latest movie in the popular franchise has been generally well received by audiences and movie critics alike, scientists who work on piecing together real world dinosaurs have been left less than impressed by some of the design decisions that went in to their on-screen counterparts.

The carnivorous velociraptors for instance, which have been portrayed as having the same smooth scales as their Jurassic Park predecessors, failed to be updated to take in to account the fact that in real-life the species would have most likely sported a plumage of colorful feathers.

"Nevermind all those fossils that demonstrate the presence of feathering in all birdlike dinosaurs, or the bony feather attachment knobs present on the arm of velociraptor," said author Darren Naish.

"Judging from the trailers, Jurassic World has opted to stick with scaly-skinned raptors, scientific advancement be damned."

Similar criticism has also been leveled at the pterosaurs in the movie which should have been more furry and were too small to have been able to pick people up off the ground.

Even the seagoing mosasaur was criticized on the basis that it should have been more cumbersome.

"Sadly, the dinosaurs in Jurassic World have not been updated with any new information from the 1990s or 2000s or 2010s, and indeed in a few cases are less accurate than in the original movie," said paleontologist Thomas R. Holtz, Jr. of the University of Maryland.

These few scientific inaccuracies however are unlikely to have much of an effect on the film's popularity which remains on course to see it become one of this year's top cinema releases.

Jurassic World dinosaurs criticised by paleontologists
The latest instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise is expected to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer but experts are unhappy with how its resurrected stars have been portrayed

Paleontologists have criticised dinosaurs depicted in summer blockbuster Jurassic World as scientifically inaccurate.

The movie, produced by Steven Spielberg, opens in cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic this weekend, and is the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise which brings to life long extinct creatures through dazzling special effects.

But experts have accused film-makers of not including recent discoveries which have changed their understanding of what dinosaurs may have looked like.

Specifically, some point to research showing the beasts, including the movie's villainous velociraptors, may have been covered in feathers rather than scales.

Darren Naish, author of The Great Dinosaur Discoveries, told CNN: "Our hopes came crashing down with the tweeting of two words from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow – 'no feathers'.

"Nevermind all those fossils that demonstrate the presence of feathering in all birdlike dinosaurs, or the bony feather attachment knobs present on the arm of velociraptor. Judging from the trailers, Jurassic World has opted to stick with scaly-skinned raptors, scientific advancement be damned."

He said the pterosaurs should have been portrayed as attractive "furry beasts" rather than "shiny-skinned horrors with grotesque, gnarly faces". And the seagoing mosasaur should have been more cumbersome than the way it is depicted.

Other paleontologists described the on-screen dinosaurs as a "major step backward for accuracy".

They said pterosaurs would not have been able to lift people off the ground as shown, and the gallimimus was the wrong size and should not have had teeth.

Thomas R. Holtz, Jr, a paleontologist at the University of Maryland, told CBS News. "Sadly, the dinosaurs in Jurassic World have not been updated with any new information from the 1990s or 2000s or 2010s, and indeed in a few cases are less accurate than in the original movie."

The director has hit back at criticism saying the film is "not a documentary".

Film-makers also pointed out that the plot includes an explanation of how the dinosaurs have been genetically modified using the DNA of other animals, which means they do not look or behave entirely as predicted.

Actually, this was touched on -briefly- in the movie. They said that they had engineered the dinosaurs to look more like what the tourists wanted. I personally would have been upset if they HAD tried to throw feathers all over the Jurassic Park of my childhood. They also explained in the movie that they used DNA from other animals to fill in holes so the dinosaurs dont look exactly like they would have
