ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), announces the following key breaking news in this Official DS News Online Update "bulletin."
**** “REVIVAL PLAY WITH SUSAN SULLIVAN & DAVID SELBY GETS AWARD NOMINATION
The revival of the classic drama A DELICATE BALANCE has received a nomination for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards. These honor “excellence in theater for Los Angeles and Orange Counties in 2014.”
DAVID SELBY (Quentin) and SUSAN SULLIVAN (Ghost) starred in the production at the Odyssey Theatre 5-3/6-15-2014. David portrayed “Tobias” and Susan his wife “Agnes.”
It is one of 3 plays nominated for “the McCulloh Award for Revival, which honors plays written between 1920 and 1980.” The other 2 are "Pippin" at Hollywood Pantages and "Ruth Draper's Monologues" at Geffen Playhouse.
The intense drama, touched with wry humor, was written by famed playwright Edward Albee in 1966. It won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for that year. Thirty years later in 1996, Albee wrote: It “concerns… the rigidity and ultimate paralysis of which afflicts those who settle in too easily, waking up one day to discover that all the choices they have avoided no longer give them any freedom of choice, and that what choices they do have left are beside the point.” (Program Book) During the course of the play, “Tobias” and “Agnes” realize how they’re trapped by their family, friend, and social choices that can not be “balanced,” no matter how much they try or wish it so.
SG Update # 340 (1-5-15) announced A DELICATE BALANCE was honored by “the theater critics of
www.ArtsinLA.com.” The play won Sage Awards for the overall production, director Robin Larsen, and 3 actors: David, Susan, and their co-star O-Lan Jones.
