Huge Underwater Pyramid Discovered Near Portugal, Navy Is Investigating, Reports Going Viral

Reports about a huge underwater pyramid being found near Portugal off the coast of Terciera in the Azores archipelago are still going viral months after the discovery was first announced.

The “subaquatic pyramidal structure” was first announced in English by the Portuguese American Journal in September 2013.

It reported that the structure was sighted by a private yacht owner at a depth of 40 meters, and that it was estimated to be about 60 meters high. Its base was measured at 8,000 square meters, which would be bigger than a football field.

“The pyramid is perfectly shaped and apparently oriented by the cardinal points,” Diocleciano Silva, the owner, told Diário Insular, the local newspaper.

Archeologists from the Portuguese Association of Archaeological Research found evidence of other rock structures in the area that they believe supports the belief that humans arrived in the Azores thousands of years before the Portuguese.

The structures may have been built according to a plan because they’re aligned with the summer solstices.

The Portuguese found the Azorean archipelago uninhabited around 1427.

Among other evidence found includes an epigraph from Roman times, Carthaginian sanctuaries, and cave art.

Alternative news sources say that American media outlets have been suppressing the discovery and that NOAA has known about the pyramids for a while. The discoveries have been promoted by these sources as possibly being linked to Atlantis, a kingdom that is purported to have existed many years ago but has never been found.

 Silva himself believes this to be the case.

“It’s amazing because it forms a perfect pyramid. And moreover, orientation, deployment of the pyramid: the vertices are oriented north and south, just north and south, such as the Giza pyramids in Egypt,” he told Portuguese news website Terra.

The Portuguese Navy is helping investigate the findings.

Admiral Fernando Pires, commander of the Maritime Zone of Azores, said that it’s too early to know definitively what the structures are or where they came from.

Não é possível "confirmar a existência de tal figura geométrica, com a forma e dimensão divulgada, registando-se apenas uma elevação submarina semelhante a outras elevações detetadas no Banco D. João de Castro", afirma um parecer do Instituto Hidrográfico sobre a suposta pirâmide subaquática descoberta nos Açores.

A construção piramidal, cujos vértices teriam a mesma orientação norte-sul das pirâmides de Gizé, mediria 60 metros de altura e a base estaria a 100 metros de profundidade. Foi detetada recentemente ao largo da ilha Terceira por um velejador local, Diocleciano Silva, através de um GPS com um programa de cartografia de baixa resolução dos fundos marinhos.

A Secretaria Regional da Educação, Ciência e Cultura, resolveu pedir ajuda à Marinha para desvendar o mistério. O Instituto Hidrográfico (IH) realizou então uma análise aos dados de profundidade existentes relativos à área, obtidos num levantamento hidrográfico realizado em 2009 com equipamentos de alta definição.

No parecer agora tornado público, o Instituto Hidrográfico afirma que "nos modelos batimétricos gerados não é visível qualquer estrutura com a profundidade mínima de 40 metros, registando-se nessa posição profundidades da ordem dos 540 metros". ( ver video ). 

O Instituto Hidrográfico é o órgão da Marinha responsável pela produção da cartografia hidrográfica do território nacional, tendo como atribuição a execução dos levantamentos batimétricos dos espaços marítimos sob soberania ou jurisdição nacional para a manutenção e atualização das cartas náuticas.

A Marinha Portuguesa diz que a suposta pirâmide submersa a sudoeste da ilha Terceira é um monte submarino e não uma obra do homem.

 

Uma recolha batimétrica feita pelo velejador Diocliciano Silva apontava para a possível existência de uma pirâmidade de sessenta metros submersa entre a Terceira e São Miguel, próximo do banco D. João de Castro.

O comandante da Zona Marítima dos Açores diz que se trata de um "erro de leitura".

O último levantamento hidrográfico,feito em 2009,no local identificou apenas uma "cordilheira montanhosa",explica o militar.

Na sequência da solicitação do Governo Regional dos Açores, o Instituto Hidrográfico (IH) realizou uma análise aos dados existentes relativos à área onde foi reportada uma pirâmide submarina. Nos dados de profundidade do levantamento hidrográfico, realizado em 2009, não é possível confirmar a existência de tal figura geométrica, com a forma e dimensão divulgada, registando-se apenas uma elevação submarina, semelhante a outras elevações detetadas no Banco D. João de Castro.

Nos modelos batimétricos gerados a partir dos dados existentes no IH, não é visível qualquer estrutura com a profundidade mínima de 40 metros, registando-se nessa posição profundidades da ordem dos 540 metros (ver figura), estes dados foram recolhidos através de equipamentos de alta definição.

The “Underwater Pyramid” Discovered off the Azores—The Update No One Wants To Read

The story emerged around September 23, 2013 and was soon touted on thousands of web sites where it morphed into more and more fantastic claims. The stories started by relating that a “gigantic pyramid” had been discovered off the Azores Island of Terceira in 130 feet of water. It was said to be 197-feet tall, perfectly aligned to the cardinal directions, perfectly square, and discovered by a private Portuguese yachtsman using sonar. The base was calculated at 295 feet on each side. It was first reported on Portuguese television and then by a newspaper. When it hit the internet it quickly morphed into a “perfect stone pyramid,” definitely “the discovery of Atlantis,” the main site where “ancient aliens from Atlantis” landed, and so much more. The Portuguese Navy was said to be excited and investigating the discovery.

The sonar images didn’t really look perfectly square, but that didn’t matter. And the idea that it was “gigantic” seemed odd. There are a lot of pyramids, ancient and modern, that are taller and have much larger bases. But the speculation ran rampant on web sites and forums. Almost immediately, calculations were made asserting that the pyramid was so “perfect” that it incorporated Phi in its base and Pi in its height. The slope of the pyramid’s sides was calculated by some people to be precisely the same as Kafre’s Pyramid at Giza. Author Graham Hancock became so excited that he wrote that he was considering going to site to scuba dive it. Then a website touting the discovery popped up that used the nonprofit (org) designation. It began by complaining that the discovery was not getting enough media attention. The owner of the website is listed as “private” and was registered by a third party.

Very few people wrote anything cautious. I wrote on Facebook that there were stone structures on several Azores islands and it would not be surprising that some structures there were now underwater. And I hoped that the reports were true, but because I have used sonar and seen a lot of old sonar reports of underwater “pyramids”—which later turned out to be nothing but shifting piles of sand, I doubted the entire thing. Andrew Collins wrote on Facebook that, while it was intriguing, he cautioned that sonar was not a reliable way to discover an underwater pyramid and that volcanic hills and ridges were known to be in that area. Oddly the reports of pyramid discoveries in the Bahamas still keep emerging as if they are new stories. But all of these have turned out to be false—sadly so, I will add.

For a week or so the websites touting the discovery kept asking what the Portuguese Navy was doing? But when the Navy gave their answer, it was met with silence and claims of a cover-up.

On October 5 the Portugal-based Hydrographic Institute issued a report that was all but totally ignored by the English speaking media. Portuguese newspapers reported that the sonar used by the sailor was extremely low-resolution. The data points obtained by the sonar pings created straight lines making it look uniform. The Secretary of Science & Culture had also asked the Portuguese Navy to investigate so they pulled out a hydrographic survey of the site made with the highest resolution equipment. The results were definitive: there is no “structure” there, just a hill on the bottom.

The Portuguese Navy then formally commented on the “discovery.” In this video a Navy Commander relates that it is a sonar “read error” and that it is a volcanic hill.

The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute then related that the “pyramid” was a known volcanic hill and posted actual underwater bottom contours of the site from a hydrographic survey.

For the Portuguese Navy and their officials (who were initially said to be excited and involved) that ended the affair. But almost immediately there came allegations that it was a cover-up. It is obviously a pyramid from Atlantis some claimed, and for reasons that are obscure, the government doesn’t want anyone to know. At least, that’s the claim. But of course, none of the people who claim a cover-up will ever go out there and dive it or drop a camera down. It is much better to keep it alive as a mystery. After all, no one wants to admit the truth—or know the truth.

Last spring, Diocleciano Silva was sailing his yacht in the Azores near Portugal when his GPS hit on a perfectly square...thing just 40 meters off the coast of Terciara. Estimated at 60 meters tall and perfectly square, GPS imaging recorded the structure as a sort of underwater pyramid "...perfectly shaped and apparently oriented by the cardinal points," Silva Diário Insular, told the local newspaper.

Since then there has been a firestorom of speculation and controversy over the possible discovery or hoax of the 'Azores Pyramid'. According to Collective-Evolution.com, the pyramid was found in an area of the mid-Atlantic that has been underwater for about 20,000 years. Considering this is around the time of the last ice age where glaciation was melting from its peak 2000 years prior, an unknown civilization predating the ice age, is the only thing that could be responsible for building a pyramid.

Reports from the Portugese American Journal claim archeologists from the Portuguese Association of Archaeological Research (APIA) have found archaeological evidence on Pico island supporting the notion that human occupation of the Azores predates the arrival of the Portuguese by several thousands of years. However, deniers say that to claim the possibility of an underwater civilization as a hoax all you have to do is to compare the uncharted area around the Azores islands as it changed over the last 60 years in the ocean relief maps.

Even still folklore is sometimes as strong as scientific evidence, or the lack thereof, and natives from Sao Miguel truly believe the Azores is a remnant of Atlantis. Some of the old folks on the island insist people inhabited the islands long before the Portuguese found them. Call it a conspiracy, hoax or legitimate archeological find, the Azores pyramid is a testament to the credence that the more we learn about anceint civilizations and our place in the universe, the less we seem to know. Reality truly is what you believe. What do you believe?
