Brazilian 'Atlantis': Submersible Finds Possible Evidence Of Continent Deep Beneath Atlantic Ocean (VIDEO)

Nearly 2,600 years after Greek philosopher Plato wrote about the fabled metropolis of Atlantis, vanished forever beneath the sea, a Japanese-manned submersible has discovered rock structures that may be evidence of a continent that similarly disappeared beneath the Atlantic Ocean many, many years ago.

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Geology Service of Brazil (CPRM) announced Tuesday the discovery of granite at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, about 900 miles off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Granite, normally found on dry land, suggests that a continent once existed in the region and then sank, much in the same way Plato described, according to The Japan Times.

“South America and Africa used to be a huge, unified continent," Shinichi Kawakami, a professor at Gifu University told the outlet. "The area in question may have been left in water as the continent was separated in line with the movements of plates."

Plato wrote that Atlantis was "an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules," Reuters notes. During Plato's time, the Straits of Gibraltar were known as the Pillars of Hercules, so Atlantis-seekers have focused their search in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. (However, others disregard the tale altogether, NTDTV points out.)

CPRM geology director Roberto Ventura Santos emphasizes that his team's references to the so-called "Brazil’s Atlantis" are mostly symbolic.

"Obviously, we don’t expect to find a lost city in the middle of the Atlantic," Santos said, according to the Telegraph. “But if it is the case that we find a continent in the middle of the ocean, it will be a very big discovery that could have various implications in relation to the extension of the continental shelf.”

JAMSTEC, which is currently conducting a variety of missions and experiments, has been exploring this region in the Atlantic for some time using its state-of-the-art manned mini-sub the Shinkai 6500, the Telegraph notes.

On its website, JAMSTEC states its mission is "to contribute to the advancement of academic research in addition to the improvement of marine science and technology by proceeding the fundamental research and development on marine, and the cooperative activities on the academic research related to the Ocean for the benefit of the peace and human welfare."

Finding Plato's actual lost city has been something of a holy grail for many researchers and has spawned several unproven "breakthroughs."

In 2011, a team of researchers claimed to have found Atlantis buried in mud off the tip of Spain. The ancient city was allegedly flooded by a devastating tsunami, according to PopSci. In 2009, a mysterious, underwater grid pattern on Google Earth was also heralded by some as the lost city; however, Google Earth quickly explained it was a glitch created by sonar boat data collection, Time reported

Sub discovers signs of legendary Atlantis
Japan agency finds unique granite mass off Brazil coast

Kyodo

    May 7, 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO – A large mass of granite has been found on the seabed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, suggesting a continent may have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the Brazilian government announced.

A Brazilian official said the discovery of the granite — which normally forms only on dry land — is strong evidence that a continent used to exist in the area where the legendary island of Atlantis, mentioned in antiquity by Plato in his philosophical dialogues, was supposedly located.

According to legend, the island, host to a highly developed civilization, sunk into the sea around 12,000 years ago. No trace of it has ever been found.

The finding was made using a Shinkai 6500 manned submersible operated by the Japanese agency. The seabed where the granite mass was discovered is estimated to have sunk into the sea several tens of million years ago. No man-made structures have been found there.

It is the first time such research using a manned submersible has been conducted in the South Atlantic. In late April, the agency used the device to explore the Rio Grande Rise, a seabed more than 1,000 km southeast of Rio de Janeiro. At a depth of 910 meters, it found a rock cliff around 10 meters in height and breadth.

After analyzing video data, the agency concluded it was granite. Also discovered in the area around it was a large volume of quartz sand — which is also not formed in the sea. The bedrock is believed to consist mainly of basalt rock.

The rise itself stretches around 1,000 km at the widest point, and is considered part of the continent left behind when South America and Africa split apart more than 100 million years ago. The agency said it assumes the area was above sea level until about 50 million years ago but became submerged over a period spanning several million years, based on fossils found in the nearby seabed and other data.

According to the agency, the Rio Grande Rise is the only plausible area that could possibly have been dry land in the past.

Despite the latest discovery, however, experts remained cautious about jumping to conclusions about Atlantis.

Shinichi Kawakami, a professor at Gifu University versed in planetary sciences, said the granite could have been a part of a big continent before it separated into what is now Africa and South America.

“South America and Africa used to be a huge, unified continent. The area in question may have been left in water as the continent was separated in line with the movements of plates,” he said.

Kawakami said researchers must look further into the composition of the granite and see if it matches the granite now found in Africa or South America.

“The concept of Atlantis came way before geology of the modern age was established. We should not jump to the Atlantis (conclusion) right away,” he said.

Atlantis Found Off Brazil? Erm...
May 8, 2013 03:48 PM ET // by Larry O'Hanlon

It’s happened! Scientists have found the lost continent of Atlantis…again! (They also found it in February off Cuba, last year in the North Sea and generally about once a year, some where).

But this time it’s the real one. I swear.

New World Heritage Sites: Photos

Here’s how it happened: 900 miles off the coast of Brazil some Japanese researchers dredged up some rocks that are the kind typically associated with continents. Continental rocks under the ocean water can only mean one thing: Atlantis!

They even have a picture of one of the rocks, which, using my geological expertise, I have positively identified as a petrified peach jelly roll. Does Nature make peach jelly rolls? And tell me, what city is known for peaches? That’s right, Atlanta! Are you getting the picture? This is no coincidence.

Now, of course, there are some evil-minded naysayers out there, including the scientists who found the rocks, but we can safely ignore these Atlantis denialists. I mean, these rocks can’t possibly mean that a chunk of South America got marooned by the rifting that created the Atlantic Ocean millions of years ago. What an absurd idea. Plate tectonics?! Really? How boring!

NEWS: Stone Mystery in Sea of Galilee

It’s virtually certain that these bits of rock will lead to the rapid discovery of a vast lost civilization still inhabited by aqua-humans at the bottom of the ocean. What’s more, these Aqua-Atlantians will have the solutions to all our problems, since they are almost certainly advanced extraterrestrials.

I mean, how else can you explain the fact that they created such an impressive civilization (again, which we will discover any day now) so many millennia ago. Could regular stone age humans do it? Nah! Ancient humans were just so, you know, stupid! Not like Atlantians or us modern humans at all.

So stay tuned and fear not: Just as soon as you have forgotten about this amazing discovery, Atlantis will be discovered again, and again, and again. Isn’t it wonderful?

RIO DE JANEIRO: A large mass of granite has been found on the seabed off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, suggesting that a continent may have existed in the Atlantic Ocean, a Japanese agency and the Brazilian government has said.

A Brazilian official said yesterday that the discovery of the granite, which is formed only on dry land, is strong evidence that a continent existed in the area where the legendary island of Atlantis, mentioned by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues, was supposed to be located.

According to the legend, the island, host to a highly developed civilisation, sunk into the sea in a flood around 12,000 years ago.

No traces have so far been found. The discovery was made using a Shinkai 6500 manned submersible belonging to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.

The seabed where the granite mass was found is estimated to have sunk into the sea several tens of million years ago.

No man-made structures have been found. It is the first time research using a manned submersible has been conducted in the South Atlantic Ocean.

In late April, the agency used it to explore the Rio Grande Rise, a seabed more than 1,000 kilometres southeast of Rio de Janeiro.

At a depth of 910 meters, it found a rock cliff around 10 meters in height and breadth.

The agency concluded that it was granite after analysing video data.

Also found in the sea around it was a large volume of quartz sand, which is also not formed in the sea.

The bedrock is believed to be mainly basalt rock. The rise itself stretches around 1,000 kilometres at the widest point and is considered part of the continent left behind when South America and Africa were split over 100 million years ago.

The agency said it assumes it was above the sea until around 50 million years ago but submerged over a period of around several million years, given fossils found in the seabed around the area and other data.

According to the agency, the Rio Grande Rise is the only plausible area that could have possibly formerly been dry land.

The legend of Atlantis, a sunken island thought to have once lay between Africa and South America, has been the subject of literary myths for centuries.

But geologists in Brazil have now added their claims to speculation over the precise location of the mysterious land mass, mentioned first by Plato in around 360BC.

Working with scientists from Japan, experts believe they have found evidence of a continent that disappeared after Africa and South America separated, 900 miles from the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The discovery of granite, a rock formed on dry land, was announced by the Geology Service of Brazil (CPRM) as a sign of a lost continent.

“This could be Brazil’s Atlantis,” said CPRM geology director Roberto Ventura Santos. “We are almost certain, but we need to strengthen this hypothesis.”

The material was reportedly found more than 8,000 feet beneath the sea in a region known as the Rio Grande Elevation.

It was discovered last year when geologists dredged the seabed. Underwater observations from Japan’s £84 million manned mini-sub Shinkai 6500 yielded more reports of granite formations last month.

“It is unusual because it is granite rock,” Mr Santos told Brazilian newspaper Estadao. “And you don’t find granite on the seabed. It is more usual to find it on the mainland.”

Hiroshi Kitazato, the Japanese researcher who led the work for the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), said the region was of interest to researchers.

“This is the region that has been least explored worldwide,” he said. “So, we believe it is very important to research it. Previously, the Shinkai carried out expeditions closer to Japan, the Indian and the Pacific Ocean.”

The current thinking on the findings is that the land is continental crust but further confirmation is needed. Scientists are now expected to drill for more samples later this year.

“We speak of Atlantis more in terms of symbolism,” Mr Santos added. “Obviously, we don’t expect to find a lost city in the middle of the Atlantic.

“But if it is the case that we find a continent in the middle of the ocean, it will be a very big discovery that could have various implications in relation to the extension of the continental shelf.”
