Meet the UK's scariest ghosts from Henry VIII's spirit to haunting headless horsemen

    By Ben Burrows

Fresh from the 'sighting' of a shadowy hooded figure in Bolton yesterday, we've scoured the length and breadth of the country to bring you plenty more

Oooooh: Could this spooky figure be Henry himself?

A couple believe a ghost of a Victorian girl is "haunting" them after a chilling figure appeared in their family snaps.

John Burnside and Shona Backhouse took a handful of photos when visiting York's Castle Museum two years ago with their baby son Johnthomas.

But when looking again at the photographs more recently, they noticed the image of a ghostly girl appearing in some of the pictures.

In honour of this latest paranormal sighting, we've scoured the length and breadth of the country to bring the best ghostly goings on in the UK.
The Hampton Court ghost, London

Henry VIII is said to still walk the corridors of his former palace, even some 500 years after his death.

Alongside wife number three, Jane Seymour, and wife number five, Catherine Howard, he apparently haunts the giant buildings he was given in 1528.

Nine years ago security staff spotted a figure in a large cloak bursting through some fire doors.

Under closer inspection of CCTV footage the doors can be seen being thrown open and a shadowy figure appearing.
Whitstable corner shop ghost, Kent

A spooky video of teabags levitating off a corner shop shelf went viral earlier this year.

CCTV footage captured the moment a box seemingly leaves the shelf at the Whitstable Nutrition Centre in front of a completely unaware shopper.

The box then drops to the floor apparently in contact with nothing around it.
Castlefield House poltergeist, Manchester

This video from November 2012 alleges to show a poltergeist causing havoc in a building in Manchester.

Caught on CCTV office chairs move independently, cabinets open and shut, screens go on and off and door handles open and rattle.

Whether this is definitive footage of a real paranormal event, or just security staff bored on a night shift is not clear.

Plenty of people have seen fit to take a look though with nearly 700,000 viewers online.
Leeds Castle ghost

A 13-month-old princess is said to still walk the halls of Leeds Castle.

Circumstances surrounding her death remain shrouded in mystery but this video claims to have caught her on tape for the first time.

They've even slowed down the clip so you can see the 'sighting' in all its glory.
Guy Fawkes' ghost, Guy Fawkes Inn, York

While the famous plotter hasn't been seen as such, there have been lots of ghostly goings on noted at his former residence.

You can stay at the cottage where he was reportedly born, and guests have checked out in the middle of the night after noticing strange and unexplainable events.
Red Dress Manor

Calcott Hall is said to be frozen in time after being left untouched since its last owner died in the 1970s.

Dubbed Red Dress Manor the abandoned building in Wales is filled with personal effects, letters and photos.

And spookily the famous red dress that the owner is pictured in still hangs up as if someone is still present in the house.
The White Lady of Rufford

A fast-fingered teenager captured a ghostly image while visiting Rufford Abbey with friends.

The photographs show the arched stone doorway to the medieval Cellarium area of the ruins, and appear to show a misty white figure.

Staff think he might have captured images of the ghostly White Lady of Rufford who, according to legend, is believed to be the spirit of ill-fated Arbella Stuart.
Borley Rectory, Essex

Borley Rectory is apparently one of the most haunted places in the whole of the UK.

A ghost of a nun, two headless horsemen, a phantom horse carriage, servants bells ringing even though the lines had been cut and other ghostly goings on.

In 1927 unnerved by paranormal phenomena the residents contacted the Daily Mirror who sent noted expert Harry Price to assess the reports.

Upon his arrival in the rectory objects were apparently thrown at him and spirit messages inscribed on to a mirror frame.

Price went on to write a book about his investigations, The Most Haunted House in England, that made him and the rectory itself famous.
Houses of Parliament ghost

How about a ghost at Guy Fawkes' most infamous hangout?

At the turn of this year a professional snapper claims to have photographed a ghost during the New Year's Eve celebrations on the Thames.

Paranormal investigators are apparently none the wiser as to just what the ghostly figure is.

The shot shows a person in modern clothing gazing out over the river towards the parliament building.
The Brown Lady, Norfolk

The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall reportedly still haunts its passageways.

She became famous in 1936 when she was actually photographed by Captain Hubert C. Provand.

Alongside his assistant, Captain Provand reported that a ghostly apparition gradually materialised in front of them before she moved down the staircase towards the pair.

Fortunately for us he had the presence of mind to press the shutter button and get a glimpse of her for all to see.
Lumley Castle, Durham

The 14th century building is situated in the Chester-le-Street area and is infamous for being a paranormal hotspot.

Lily Lumley, wife of creator Ralph, is said to still haunt the premises after being thrown down a well by two priests for rejecting the Catholic faith.

Most recently visiting international cricketers, including the touring Australians in 2005, reported several spooky happenings during their stay.

All-rounder Shane Watson was so freaked out by the feeling around the castle he slept on bowler Brett Lee's floor.

England bowler Darren Gough found the whole incident rather funny, prompting these hilarious on-field theatrics.
