To ancient Egyptians, animals possessed a ba, or soul. Creatures as diverse as cats, hawks, and shrews could travel to the afterlife, just as humans did. In fact, at least 20 million animals were mummified and buried in necropolises along the Nile. The March/April 2014 feature "Messengers to the Gods" explores how a rediscovered cache of animal mummies stored in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum is giving us new insights into the critical role these creatures played in the religious life of ordinary Egyptians.

Many animal mummies went to the afterlife in style. To see images of their lavish caskets, go the online exclusive "Animal Coffins of Ancient Egypt."

AIA Tours: Tunisia & Malta by Land or Sea
The AIA offers you TWO ways to explore Tunisia and Malta in 2014. Our 11-day land program in October visits all seven of Tunisia's cultural UNESCO World Heritage sites; and its optional, 4-day extension visits all three of Malta's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Or, enjoy a luxurious, 9-day cruise this June aboard the 36-cabin Variety Voyager, including excursions in Tunisia, Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia.

Complete details on these (and the rest of AIA Tours') exceptional learning adventures are online at www.aiatours.org, or contact us at (800) 748-6262 or aia@studytours.org for brochures and reservations.

Featured AIA Lecture
For those in the College Station area, Susan Heuck Allen will be lecturing on Tuesday, March 18 on Archaeologist Spies: The Truth Behind the Myth. She presents an insiders' account of the American intelligence effort in WWII Greece, when archaeologists selected for their knowledge of language and terrain were tasked with establishing spy networks, burying Athenian dig records, and organizing parachute drops. The stories of these remarkable men and women, often mistaken for mild-mannered professors and scholars, will reveal previously unpublished secret diaries, letters, and photographs.

Learn more about the AIA Lecture Program and find an upcoming lecture in your area. All lectures are free and open to the public.
