Rodin was one of the primary forces who introduced modernity to, not only the arts, but to the world at large. He was a giant, on par with Freud, Dostoyevsky and Conrad in his influence on the 20th century and continuing today.

That his work is both important and approachable is a testament to his genius, and his lifestyle and work habits, as noted in the article, would not be out of place in 2012.

Once of his last commissions was of de Balzac, a French novelist and Freemason. I love the part of his story where he's rejected twice by the Grand Ecole and goes on to become a great artist anyway. Don't let 'em tell ya that you ain't got it.
If you're visiting Paris don't miss his house. A wondrous oasis in the middle of the city.

There is a sculpture garden just off the national mall that has his masterpiece "Burghers of Calais" in it. I always stop by to admire that one when in town.

The only sculpture that I can say I understand is Rodin's "The Thinker". When I've been in deep thought, I've been in that same position on numerous occasions. Especially when I write poetry.
