GOP Operative: "The real question for Republicans in Washington is how low can you go"
The Republicans Party presents itself as the model of virtue and familiy values. The Republican Party has an agenda based on hate and divisiveness.
That Republican Party is falling apart. Read this article in today's New York Times:
Just when Republicans thought things could not get any worse, Senator Larry E. Craig of Idaho confirmed that he had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct after an undercover police officer accused him of soliciting sex in June in a Minneapolis airport restroom. On Tuesday, Mr. Craig, 62, held a news conference to defend himself, calling the guilty plea “a mistake” and declaring, “I am not gay” — even as the Senate Republican leadership asked for an Ethics Committee review.
It was a bizarre spectacle, and only the latest in a string of accusations of sexual foibles and financial misdeeds that have landed Republicans in the political equivalent of purgatory, the realm of late-night comic television.
Forget Mark Foley of Florida, who quit the House last year after exchanging sexually explicit e-mail messages with under-age male pages, or Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist whose dealings with the old Republican Congress landed him in prison. They are old news, replaced by a fresh crop of scandal-plagued Republicans, men like Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, whose phone number turned up on the list of the so-called D.C. Madam, or Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska and Representative Rick Renzi of Arizona, both caught up in F.B.I. corruption investigations.
It is enough to make a self-respecting Republican want to tear his hair out in frustration, especially as the party is trying to defend an unpopular war, contain the power of the new Democratic majority on Capitol Hill and generate some enthusiasm among voters heading toward the presidential election in 2008.
Wait....What is a "self-respecting Republican"? Is there such a creature?

GOP Distances Itself From Senator's Bathroom Bust
AP
Senate Launches Ethics Investigation…Romney: Craig’s Actions "Disgusting"…Log Cabin Republicans: "Innocent People Don't Plead Guilty"…McConnell: "This Is A Serious Matter"…55 Percent In Idaho Say Craig Should Resign…
USA Today | Kathy Kiely | August 29, 2007 10:13 AM
Moments before Sen. Larry Craig held a news conference to declare "I am not gay," Senate Republican leaders Tuesday requested an Ethics Committee investigation into the Idaho Republican's arrest in a public restroom.
The unusual move underscored the political difficulties facing Craig, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to a disorderly conduct charge and now says he regrets it. The senator was arrested at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport by a plainclothes officer investigating reports of "sexual activity in the public restroom,"...

BREAKING NEWS FROM CNN:
Craig stripped from committee assignments
Craig said Tuesday he did nothing wrong.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Senate Republican leadership said in a statement Wednesday embattled Idaho Sen. Larry Craig has agreed to temporarily step down from his committee assignments:
"Senator Larry Craig has agreed to comply with Leadership’s request that he temporarily step down as the top Republican on the Veteran Affairs Committee, Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, and Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests. This is not a decision we take lightly but we believe this is in the best interest of the Senate until this situation is resolved by the Ethics Committee."
The GOP leadership includes Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican Whip Trent Lott, Conference Chairman Jon Kyl, Policy Committee Chair Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Senatorial Committee Chair John Ensign.

Craig is Gone, Leaving GOP Bruised
By JAY NEWTON-SMALL/WASHINGTON
Sat Sep 1, 2:35 AM ET
The only regret the GOP is likely to feel about the end of Idaho Senator Larry Craig's 27-year congressional career is that it didn't happen two days earlier. Craig's announcement, Saturday, that he intends to resign effective Sept. 30 comes amid the traditional Labor Day weekend campaign launches for the 2008 election cycle. And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had not envisioned starting the weekend with the news media dominated by speculation over whether Craig is gay, and why he pled guilty to disorderly conduct on Aug. 8 when accused of soliciting sex from an undercover cop in the men's bathroom of a Minneapolis Airport.
Craig's announcement, just days after he swore to fight the charges, was hardly surprising, given the race among Republican legislators and candidates to distance themselves from the senator, many of them calling outright for his resignation. "Disgusting," said 2008 GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. "Unforgivable," said McConnell to a local newspaper in his home state of Kentucky. The Republican National Committee even drafted a letter calling for his resignation, although it stopped short of releasing to avoid being seen as piling on - although leaking it widely to the media had virtually the same effect.
Noting the presence of Idaho Governor Butch Otter and Idaho Republican Party Chairman Kirk Sullivan at his resignation announcement, a clearly humiliated Craig noted: "For any public official at this time to be standing with Larry Craig is in itself a humbling experience."
Scandals of the sort that brought down Craig have a demoralizing effect on the Republican base, leaving the party even more vulnerable in the 2008 elections. In putting Democrats in control of Congress for the first time since 1994, voters last November cited corruption scandals that had led to the resignation of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, California Rep. Duke Cuningham and Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio, coupled with a sexual harassment scandal involving underage male congressional pages that led to the abrupt resignation of Florida Rep. Mark Foley.
Just last spring, Senator Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young, both Alaska Republicans, were linked to an ongoing bribery and money laundering investigation. And Senator David Vitter of Louisiana admitted to inappropriate conduct with the D.C. Madame. Now, the GOP must digest the Craig scandal.
"Craig had the misfortune to commit his sin on the heels of Foley, Vitter, and others," said Larry Sabato, head of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "The tolerance in the GOP ranks for misdeeds is at a low ebb. Republicans are facing yet another tough election where they are behind the eight ball, and the activists are disillusioned."
Vitter's job was saved only by the fact that his replacement would have been named by Louisiana's Democratic governor, and the Republicans were not about to sacrifice a seat. Given that Idaho is heavily Republican, "his replacement, unlike Vitter's, was guaranteed to be an electable Republican," Sabato said. "This was an easy call for the GOP leadership."
As of May 31, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which helps elect Republicans to the Senate had raised only $9 million, compared to the $18 million raised by its Democratic counterpart. Even worse, the GOP has 22 seats, or two-thirds of their caucus, up for reelection while only 11 Democratic seats are at stake in 2008. Craig's is one of those 22 Republican seats up for reelection, although analysts say there is little danger of it going to the Democrats in given how Red Idaho is.
The greater danger in the Craig scandal is that it could further alienate the party's social conservative base, said Stephen Schneck, head of the politics department at Catholic University in Washington. "Republican leaders are frantic, fearing a cataclysmic collapse of the perceived moral high ground vis-à-vis the Democrats among Evangelicals and Catholics - not only among swing voters, but among the base," said Schneck.
Fear of the impact the latest scandal would have on the Republican base appears to have been foremost in the mind of Senator John Ensign, head of the NRSC, to urge Craig to quit for the sake of the party. "There is no question Senator Craig, being a Republican, brings a bad reputation," Ensign told a television station in his homestate Nevada. "We've had some problems lately."
While Craig's departure will likely move media coverage of the scandal from the front page to Page 10, it still leaves the Republicans facing a tougher challenge than ever the difficulty in regaining the high ground with their own base over the next 16 months.

Travelers ask to see Craig bathroom
Sun Sep 16, 4:33 PM ET
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - When tourists ask for the bathroom in the Minneapolis airport lately, it's usually not because they have to go.
It's because they want to see the stall made famous by U.S. Sen. Larry Craig's arrest in a sex sting.
"It's become a tourist attraction," said Karen Evans, information specialist at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. "People are taking pictures."
Craig was arrested June 11 by a Minneapolis airport police officer. The Idaho Republican pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
Craig has since said his guilty plea was a mistake. His request to withdraw the guilty plea will be heard Sept. 26, just four days before he has said he will step down from his Senate seat.
Just 15 minutes into her shift on Friday, Evans said she had been asked directions to the new tourist attraction four times. Other airport workers field the same question.
"It's by the Lottery shop, right next to the shoeshine shop," said newsstand worker Abdalla Said, adding he gets the question daily.
The Royal Zino Shoeshine shop owner's grandson, Royal Zino, said it has been hectic.
"People have been going inside, taking pictures of the stall, taking pictures outside the bathroom door — man, it's been crazy," he said.
On their way to Guatemala, Jon and Sally Westby of Minneapolis made a visit.
"We had to just stop and check out the bathroom," Sally said. "In fact, it's Jon's second time — he was here last week already."

Tales from a Minnesota Toilet
By MITCH ANDERSON/MINNEAPOLIS
Sun Sep 23, 6:35 AM ET
It's only been three weeks since a bathroom sting operation made U.S. Sen. Larry Craig a household name, but already Royal Zeno is sick of talking about it. "I don't know nothing about what goes on in no bathrooms," he says whenever asked about the infamous stall where the Republican senator from Idaho was arrested. Unfortunately for Zeno, it doesn't look like the talk will stop anytime soon, as the shoeshine shop he's run for the last 45 years adjoins the newest tourist attraction Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has to offer.
Since the Craig scandal first made headlines Aug. 27, the airport has been fielding requests for directions to the men's room in question. "I get the question daily," says Barb, a newsstand employee who declined to give her last name per her manager's request. "Normally they just want to know where it is," she says, "but one guy asked me to take a picture for him. It really has become quite the spectacle." Although men and women both show interest in the bathroom, Barb says, it's mostly the men who work up the nerve to ask for directions. "By the food court, next to the lottery stand," she tells them without batting an eyelash.
John Sheren, an airport information volunteer, says he had already been asked about the bathroom twice since he started his shift less than an hour before this reporter got to him. "People seem to have a weird fascination with it," he says. Indeed, sheets of toilet paper from the bathroom have apparently made their way for sale on eBay.
Frank and Lisa Smoot, a San Jose couple who missed their connecting flight to New Hampshire, thought they'd use the downtime afforded them to scope out the scene for themselves. "We're bored to death of sitting around the airport, so I thought we'd check it out," Frank says shortly after his wife snapped a digital photo of him giving a thumbs-up next to the bathroom sign. "It's just so bizarre to think that I can go stand next to where one of our 100 senators met his political demise."
"I've heard from some of the guys that I work with that that kind of stuff goes on in bathrooms," says Megan Schlossmacher, a security screener, referring to the now infamous details of the incident. "But I couldn't believe it when it actually happened." She adds, "That's like a really, really busy bathroom, the one that he was in. It's right outside the security checkpoint, I use that women's bathroom all the time. I don't know about other people, but I was really surprised that he chose such a heavily trafficked area."
While tourists might take pleasure in commemorating their brush with celebrity, airport officials are not thrilled. "I understand the curiosity, but we're certainly not looking for any kind of special attention to the bathroom as a tourist attraction," says Pat Hogan, public affairs director for the Metropolitan Airports Commission. "We've had complaints from people who've said they've used it and women have walked into the men's restroom to take pictures. We can't have that."
"A lot of people who work at the airport are simply tired of this story," Hogan says. "While the curiosity of somebody who's just passing through the airport may be understandable, for the people who work here every day they frankly get tired of talking about it, hearing about it and answering questions about it."
Kevin Wasiluk, who sat outside the bathroom while waiting to catch a flight, says he first heard about the bathroom on the evening news. Wasiluk says he fully embraces the novelty of the situation. "It's pop history," he says. "No one's going to remember this in five years, so I'm going to get a picture while I still can."
