Horror Movie Locations You Can Actually Visit

In this week’s Chernobyl Diaries, six young tourists take an 'extreme tour' of Pripyat, an abandoned city near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and soon discover that ‘getting off the beaten path’ is far more dangerous than they had anticipated. We don’t necessarily recommend such ‘extreme’ trips -- unless you have your own trusty Geiger counter! -- but we understand the desire to see places where terrible things have happened. So we’ve compiled our own list of horror movie locations you can actually visit.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Originally located in Quick Hill, southeast of Round Rock near Austin, Texas, the family house made famous by Tobe Hooper’s movie was relocated to Kingsland, Texas, in 1998, and is now known as the Junction House Restaurant, on the grounds of the nearby Antlers Inn. The restaurant serves steaks and seafood, but don’t expect any ‘cannibal burgers.’

Carrie

Though set at a high school, scenes set in the gymnasim (and the girls’ shower room) were shot at Pier Avenue Junior High School in Hermosa Beach, California. The school has since been converted into the Hermosa Beach Community Center, where you can rent out the gymnasium for basketball -- or telekinesis parties, we suppose.

The Sentinel

Cristina Raines starred as a model who moved into an apartment in Brooklyn Heights, New York, with gorgeous views of the harbor and Manhattan. Today you can take a pleasant walk to Montague Terrace and enjoy the same views -- and you can bask in the sight from the equally lovely Promenade, perfect for contemplation of the evil that sometimes lurks within beautiful old buildings.

Halloween

Michael Myers wreaks havoc in the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, but John Carpenter didn’t have to go far to find the perfect locations for his classic chiller. The Myers family home is situated in South Pasadena, California, while the two houses where the adult Michael terrorizes Jamie Lee Curtis and friends are conveniently located off Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger haunts the dreams of teenagers in Springwood, Ohio, a fictional town that, like Halloween’s Haddonfield, was actually shot in southern California. The home of our heroine on Elm Street was, in “real” reality, located on North Genesee Avenue in Hollywood (south of Sunset Boulevard), with settings throughout the Los Angeles area filling in for the sleepy Midwest.

Child’s Play

As a doll who becomes possessed by the soul of a murderer, Chucky does some serious damage in the apartment in Chicago where Karen Barcley (Catherine Hicks) lives with her young son Alex. The building still stands on Pine Grove Avenue in the Lakeside neighborhood, on the north side of Chicago. We’re sure the residents will appreciate it if you avoid chanting spells on the sidewalk.

Poltergeist

From all reports, the lovely suburban home where Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams waged war against a bunch of demons to save their family still stands, completely with swimming pool and Indian burial ground in the backyard. The house is located in Simi Valley, California, north of Los Angeles, in what we are sure is a model community.

Paranormal Activity

Oren Peli, who co-wrote and co-produced Chernobyl Diaries, kicked off his career by making a movie in his own house, so it’s only appropriate that it be included. The tract home is located in the Rancho Peñasquitos community in northeastern San Diego, California; we don’t have official confirmation that this is the house haunted by, well, paranormal activity, so we especially don’t recommend knocking on this front door.

The Entity

The supposedly true story of a woman haunted by a poltergeist in the late 1970s starring Barbara Hershey was filmed at a small house in the beachside town of El Segundo, Calif. (pictured left), but the real paranormal activity allegedly took place about 7 miles away on a quiet street in Culver City (at right). It's said that the hauntings followed the home's resident when she moved--but still, if this place went up for sale, would you dare even peek inside?
