This photograph shows King Kong and the other animation models as they appeard in 1933. One model, the styracosaurus was cut from King Kong but did make an appearance in Son of Kong

In 1933, the Motion Picture Academy wouldn't consider giving any Oscars for special effects -- not even for King Kong. But by 1949 they reconsidered this policy and awarded Willis O'Brien with this special Oscar for Mighty Joe Young.

Willis O'Brien stands in front of the giant head of King Kong used in some close-up shots. The bust was built on a flat car from mobility and required three men inside it to operate the jaws, eyes, eyebrows and other facial expressions.

This is a rare photograph showing the spider and other monsters at the bottom of the crevasse in King Kong. The sequence originally called for Kong to shake the sailors off the log and they fell into the crevasse where spiders, scorpions and other creatures ate the wounded sailors.

Merian C. Cooper decided that the footage showing the spiders was too shocking and drew attention away from the main plot action so he removed it from the film before it was released in 1933. So far, this film has never been found and all that remains of this animated sequence are two photographs and a sketch.
