Bulgarian Breaks Code for Ancient Thracian Letters

Lifestyle
A plate unearthed in Bulgarian land, which is dating back to the times of Mesopotamia civilization, has provided the code for reading the ancient letters of Thracians.

The sensational breakthrough was announced to be made by Bulgaria-born Dr Stefan Guide, residing in the US. He is an expert in linguistics, cryptography and transcendent analysis.

According to him, the decoded alphabet showed terms such as "Thracia" and "territory of Thracia" to have existed seven centuries before Christ - even before the civilizations of Egypt and Shumer.

The culture of Paleolith tribes living on nowadays Bulgarian land is believed to hide the roots of ancient Orphic mysteries.

Signs of sound alphabet have been discovered on the localities: Lepeneski Vir and Vincha in Serbia, Karanovo, Gradeshnitsa and Sitovo in Bulgaria, Tartaria in Romania as well as many localities in Macedonia.

More information on the findings - which, if true, will give an entirely new direction of the sciences of Thracians - will be held March 29, Wednesday, in the BTA press club in Sofia, archeologists announced.

Thracian Code Breaker Accused of Cribbing

Lifestyle
The author of a book unveiling the secrecy of Thracian letters has been publicly accused of cribbing from a publication.

At a press conference on Wednesday Bulgaria-born Dr Stefan Guide was critisised by a Bulgarian journalist that quotes and statements in his book do not meet the reality.

The US-residing linguist, who is also a specialist in cryptography and transcendent analysis, claimed that a Bulgaria-found plate - dating back to the times of Mesopotamia civilization - has provided the code for reading the ancient letters of Thracians.

According to him, the decoded alphabet showed terms such as "Thracia" and "territory of Thracia" to have existed seven centuries before Christ.

This makes it the oldest known human letters in the world, the Bulgaran scientist said.

Bulgaria Left Thracian Bones to Stray Dogs

A museum in south Bulgaria has left out on the street bones of Thracians, found at different archaeological sites in the region, a newspaper revealed Friday.

Stray dogs have been rummaging the findings for days, residents of Kardzhali have told 24 Chasa daily.

Workers had to take pieces out of the museum storehouse after its land was denationalized and had to be restored to previous owners.

Bones, ceramic items and fossils can be seen piled up next to the street, a reporter has said after visiting the site.

The newspaper informed the police, and authorities immediately ordered for the museum items to be brought back indoors, 24 Chasa says.

The Thracian bones have been recovered from Tsarkvitsa, Sedlovina, Sedlare, as well as the ancient sanctuary of Perperikon.

Abandoned Ancient Chariots Found in Bulgaria

Crime
Bulgarian police have discovered three ancient chariots and two ornaments tossed in an abandoned vine-field close to the central city of Stara Zagora.

The artefacts were found meters away from a mount and archaeologists believe they date back to the II or III century AD, the Bulgarian national TV reported.

Marauders have most likely ripped off exquisite bronze ornaments from the wheels of the chariots, experts think.

The silver ornaments that were spared by the treasure-hunters are rarely seen on Thracian chariots. This made archaeologists think that the artefact were probably used special occasions.

All artefacts have been sent to the Stara Zagora history museum.

Police are certain that the relics were pilfered by treasure-hunters and they have already arrested three men who were carrying out archaeological digs without permission.

WOW! This post and the last one seem to show quite a problem.

Bulgaria Reveals 7,000-Aged Coded Letters

Lifestyle
A stone tile in coded letters dating back since 5,000 BC was made public for the first time on Thursday.

Prominent archaeologist Professor Nikolay Ovcharov held a special news conference in Sofia to show the finding reportedly unearthed 20 years ago.

The tile has sizes 7cm x 8cm x 1.5cm and was previously in private hands, Ovcharov told media.

The coded tile consists of five separate parts with two elements each depicting a human figure with a lifted arm, Ovcharov explained.

The archaeologist has concluded that there is no obvious order in the arrangement of the parts but, definitely, the unique symbols have some meaning.

The find is only the third of its kind dating to that epoch, discovered in Bulgaria, Ovcharov stated. He reminded the pictograms on the two previously found tiles consist of lines only. The symbols on all three are a prototype script, the expert added.

Though Nikolay Ovcharov did not reveal the location of the finding, the artifact apparently comes from the same age as the Mesopotamia civilization. A few months ago a US-residing linguist of Bulgarian origin, Dr Stefan Guide, claimed in Sofia he had decoded these - in his words - Thracian letters.

So far, the science does not know a system of letters that have been used by the Thracian civilisation.

Bulgaria Finds Thracian Temple, Observatory

Top News
Bulgarian archaeoastronomers are studying a unique Thracian observatory in the central region of the country, the bTV channel said Saturday.

The unusual site near Buzovgrad combined a religious temple with facilities for observing the solar movements, according to the experts there.

The place is 3,600 years old, the team have said.

At the foot of Stara Planina mountain, Thracians were using specially-shaped rocks to calibrate their calendar by measuring the sunlight.

Bulgaria Unearths Thracian Dagger of Gold

Almost 600 gold pieces and a sensational, perfectly-preserved dagger, were discovered by archeologists in central Bulgaria.

Martin Hristov's team unearthed the Thracian items at a previously discovered hotspot near Dabene, they announced on Sunday.

Among the freshly-discovered 545 pieces, the beautiful dagger is the most impressive, the team revealed.

The exclusive item, dated to the 3rd Century BC, is in very good condition and wit no patina, which demonstrates the high gold content in the alloy, out of which the dagger was made.

Bulgarian scientists say that the nature of the Dabene gold site still remains a secret, two years after the ancient place was discovered.

Despite the tremendous number of the gold objects discovered there already (16,000 in total), archeologists found no trace of a temple or settlement.

They suggest that Thracians had laid the gold in the ground as a tribute to an ancient god or goddess, maybe Gea.

Conservation will allow to display the new discoveries as of August 9, at the National Museum of History.

Major Gold Deposit Found in Bulgaria

A Canadian natural resources company has uncovered a remarkable gold deposit in west Bulgaria, at the Trun property.

Euromax announced Tuesday that survey samples showed a peak value of 440 g/t gold.

The project's chief geologist has said he was "amazed" by the finding.

After 30 years as a geologist at numerous Balkan sites, this is my first time seeing such amounts of visible gold, Georgi Vakarelski said.

The expert was stunned by the fact that neither the Romans nor the Thracian gold diggers had uncovered the depot.

Bulgarians Discover Thracian Gold Treasure

A unique Thracian gold treasure has been discovered near the eastern Bulgarian village of Sinemorets, at the mouth of Veleka River.

Archeological digs are undergoing even in the late hours of the day, Darik News reported, while armed policemen are watching over the treasure.

Locals stumbled upon the amazing discovery while digging for sand for a construction. Archaeologists were quickly called to the scene and they discovered the treasure at dawn on Sunday.

Many golden and silver dishes and ornaments and clay stones with the image of the Mother Earth have been discovered. Ancient Thrace people worshipped the goddess, so this helped in dating the relics.

The most stunning piece that was dug out so far is a priceless crown, along with a pair of golden earrings.

All archaeologists working in the area have already joined their colleagues at the site, and are working without rest, adrenaline rushing through their veins.

Bulgaria's Newest Thracian Sensation was Priestess Funeral

Bulgarian archeologists suggested that the fresh sensational find was from a priestess funeral, media reported Monday.

The gold and silver objects found near Sinemorets the past weekend were dated back to the 3rd Century B.C..

Meanwhile, media revealed that a prosecution's check had begun at the site to determine whether there have been any violations by excavators.

There had been a signal that people were digging at the mound as early as June 7, according to reports, indicating that the treasure might has been rummaged.

On Sunday, archeologists brought out a tiara and ear accessories made of gold. Silver and ceramic objects have also surfaced.

Bulgarian Museum Displays Recently Unearthed Treasure

Bulgaria's National History Museum has prepared a special treat for its visitors - a display of the priceless treasure unearthed recently.

The 160 gold and silver objects that have probably accompanied a priestess on her trip to the underworld were exhibited for the first time in Sofia on Monday.

Archaeologists date the exquisite treasure back to the 3rd Century B.C. and are astonished by a tiny golden plate engraved with the cryptic words "Demetrius made..."

Such a plate has never before been unearthed in Bulgaria and experts have only seen a piece that resembles it on the grave of Alexander The Great, hence their excitement of the fresh findings.

The priestess has most likely been ritually burned to death, Daniela Agre, head of the excavation team revealed. Archaeologists believe that the ceremony may have been in honour of Dionysus.

Discovery Films Ancient World's Sanctuary at Perperikon

A team of Discovery Channel has commenced filming the royal palace at Perperikon - ancient sanctuary believed to be even more respected than the Delphi Oracle.

The world-popular travel channel has sent its team for the first time in Bulgaria, intrigued by the yet not completely known world of ancient Thracians.

The team including a producer and a photographer is to tour all the sites related to the history and culture of Thracian tribes.

Besides Perperikon, located in the bosom of the Rhodopes mountain, Discovery's audience will see also Tatul, where the tomb of Orpheus is believed to be, and the Valley of Thracian Kings locating some of the most fabulous Thracian treasures.

"The world knows a lot about ancient Greeks and Romans, but few of achievements made by the Thracian civilisation have been displayed," a team member told state-run BTA news agency.

Discovery Channel will shoot a one-hour documentary dedicated to this little known page of history and will feature it first in the UK and the US.

Summer 2006 has marked even more enhanced archaeological work at Perperikon's excavations, near Kardzhali. In July they hit an amazing streak at the site unearthing a temple five times larger than Athens' Acropolis.

The team's leader Prof Nikolay Ovcharov has even voiced his belief Perperikon may even turn out to be the ancient world's famous Pergamos.

New Thracian Discovery Thrills Bulgarians

Bulgaria's recent archeological triumphs continue with the discovery of over 100 ancient spearheads and arrowheads near the southeastern village of Konush.

Famed archeologist Georgi Kitov an his crew have unearthed a Thracian tomb that dates back to the beginning of the fourth century BC, shedding some more light on ancient Thrace's belief in the afterlife.

The grave was built by well-moulded stone blocks, connected with metal joints. The whole tomb was covered in red lines, the symbol of Thracian god Zagreus, believed to be the archetype of Dionysus.

Once all artifacts of interest are excavated the tomb will be closed and buried again.

Bulgaria fights to save its golden past from the curse of the gangsters

Daniel McLaughlin
Sunday September 24, 2006
The Observer

NOTE THE RARE MENTION OF PLATINUM ABOVE: "Gavrail Lazov, head of archaeology at Bulgaria's National History Museum, is celebrating another remarkable find while lamenting his country's failure to crush crime. Last month, his colleagues unearthed 20,000 Thracian ornaments, one a dagger made of platinum and gold.

'It is 5,000 years old and still so sharp a man could shave with it. Perhaps it belonged to a king, but it is too early to be sure,' Lazov said."

"one a dagger made of platinum and gold."

From BBC;

"The alloy used in the latest find suggests a far greater degree of sophistication in metal-working that was previously known for that period.

"This significant find confirmed that people in this region were familiar with what was then high technology in metal processing," Mr Dimitrov told Reuters."

Bulgarian Archaeologists: Ancient Thracian Made Brain Surgeries........

Bulgarian archaeological expedition discovered an ancient Thracian man's skull, which had undergone cranium surgery.

The skull was found near the Southeast Bulgarian city of Svilengrad, where archaeologists make rescue excavations.

The trepanation was done for medical reasons and it is the first one believed to be from Thracian times, chief archaeologist Georgi Nehrizov commented. The find is dated year 2500-1800 BC.

During the 2000s, Bulgarian archaeologists made discoveries in Central Bulgaria, which were summarized, as "The Valley of the Thracian Kings". On 19 August 2005, some archaeologists announced they had found the first Thracian capital.

Thracians were numerous tribes that developed from a mixture of invading Indo-European and indigenous peoples in the Balkans over the centuries, starting from the Early Bronze Age. They figure in the Iliad as allies of the Trojans, hailing from Thrace.

Luck is only sometimes on the side of Bulgaria's archaeologists, as they race gangsters to unearth the treasure of the ancient Thracians.
It was with Daniela Agre last month when she came across a Black Sea hotel owner flattening a 2,000-year-old burial mound and found a horde of gold and silver jewellery that she thinks belonged to a Thracian priestess. Another archaeologist was served in a remote rural shop by a woman wearing a string of 5,000-year-old gold beads, found by her husband in sunflower fields where a large Thracian treasure trove was later discovered.

Famed for their ferocity and horsemanship, the Thracians - who lived between modern-day Ukraine and Turkey - were long considered a barbarian race whose greatest contribution to history was Spartacus, the slave who rebelled against Rome. But just as a series of spectacular finds is deepening their understanding, academics fear the violent mafia that has dogged Bulgaria's bid to join the European Union are beating them to vital pieces of the historical jigsaw.

Gavrail Lazov, head of archaeology at Bulgaria's National History Museum, is celebrating another remarkable find while lamenting his country's failure to crush crime. Last month, his colleagues unearthed 20,000 Thracian ornaments, one a dagger made of platinum and gold.

'It is 5,000 years old and still so sharp a man could shave with it. Perhaps it belonged to a king, but it is too early to be sure,' Lazov said.

Indeed the riches of Thracia may rival those of ancient Troy. The most spectacular find is the 2,500-year-old burial mask of a Thracian ruler, a solid gold visage more than 10 times heavier than the Mask of Agamemnon, which is the centrepiece of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

'Bulgaria has more ancient artefacts than any European country except Greece and Italy,' said Lazov. 'We have 15,000 Thracian burial mounds, and 400 ancient settlements - but it is terribly hard to protect them all. Looting has boomed since the end of communism 15 years ago.'

Under pressure from Brussels, Bulgaria has tightened border controls and pledged to crack down on crime. It is expected to find out on Tuesday whether it can join the EU in January. But in a country where the average monthly wage is £120, Lazov fears the criminals will always prosper. 'Right now, it would be easier to catch bin Laden than all these thieves,' he said

Bulgaria-Unearthed Temples A Millenium Older than Egypt Pyramids

Temples that archaeologists have unearthed in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria are about a thousand years older than the pyramids in Egypt and the Mesopotamian civilization, experts claim.

Archaeologists Ana Raduncheva and Stefanka Ivanova said in an interview for BTA that thew whole system of temples in the Rhodope region dated back to the Vth centyry B.C. This is almost 4,000 years before the Thracian people settled on these lands.

At the end of the Chalcolithic Age, the rock temples were abandoned for a large period of time. The Thracians rediscovered them about 2,500 years later, the archaeologists claim.

(My note: The Thracian treasures unearthed last year were dated to approx. 3000BC and that was from perhaps the heigth of their time. So, extrapolating "almost 4,000 years before the Thracian people settled on these lands." would make the temples "Vth century" ludicrous, to say the least! Especially when they indicated that they pre-date the Egyptian pyramids.)

Bulgaria's Perperikon - Metallurgical Centre 13 Centuries BC

Bulgarian archaeologists announce on Thursday they have made an incredible discovery in the Perperikon area, an ancient living region of Thracians.

The archaeologists said last summer they discovered the missing link in Thracian's history. They have found evidence for the transition from the late Bronze epoch to the early Iron epoch.

At the end of the Bronze epoch, as a result of cataclysms a global system is destroyed. Scientists call the system "East Mediterranean Civilization". After its end, there came the so called "dark ages" - a period, who until recent was a mystery for archaeologists.

According to Associate Professor of ancient history Krassimir Leshtakov, during the "dark ages" Thracian tribes have lived peacefully, thus creating a highly developed civilization. Finally, the world can see the "fruits" of this civilization at Perperikon.

The living area has been around 12 square kilometres, which is much more than the one of Troy for example,

Archaeologists found many objects, such as mould for casting axes, bellows used in smelting industry, arrows, melting pots and pivots. All these objects prove that Perperikon has been a metallurgical centre 13 centuries BC.

Specialists even talk about temple economy, which existed also in Crete and the Middle East. Thracians had games, typical of Egypt and Mesopotamia, which involved fortune telling and astronomy.

The earliest traces of human civilisation discovered so far at Perperikon were dated to the late Neolithic Period, 6th-5th millennium BC.

The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of the present-day town of Kardzhali, on a 470 m high rocky hill. The city is called "The Sacred" because the famous sanctuary and oracular shrine dedicated to Dionysus of the Bessi was situated there.

A legend tells that Alexander the Great himself had sacrificed upon the altar of Dionysus.

Unique Ancient Thracian Chariot Unearthed in Bulgaria

Top News
A completely intact Thracian chariot was unearthed by the Bulgarian archaeologist Vesselin Ignatov on Friday, Darik News reported.

The chariot was found near a burial barrow close to the central Bulgarian town of Nova Zagora. Ignatov and his team have already dated the finding to 2 century BC. The chariot has two wheels with its roof made of heavy bronze in the form of eagle heads and a folding iron chair, where the driver sat. The chariot was aimed to be pulled by three horses.

The uniqueness of the finding is that it is completely intact, with all its parts on place except the wooden ones, and now we can calculate its precise size and how exactly it was placed in the tomb, Ignatov said. He believes a second chariot will be found as the excavations continue.

Luckily this time the archaeologists reached the incredible finding before the treasure hunters, because they usually look only for gold and coins and destroy all other valuable objects.

Another Thracian chariot was found near the Sadievo village and another one was found near Korten, so now that there is a third one the regional historical museum in Nova Zagora town plans to open a museum of the Thracian chariots.

Unique Thracian Symbol of Royalty Discovered in Bulgaria

Lifestyle
Archaeologists have discovered the most ancient ruler's symbol on Bulgarian territory, what was once the kingdom of the Thracian tribes.

The Bulgarian archaeologists Daniela Agre and Deyan Dichev, who are leading the Strandzha expedition, made the announcement for the exceptional finding on the Bulgarian National Radio on Monday.

The artifact was unearthed near the village of Golyam Dervent. Dichev and Agre were researching a dolmen (dolmens were the first Thracian tombs) when they noticed a frieze of intertwined zoomorphic and geometrical elements carved on the entrance of the tomb. The most interesting part of the discovery is the double-axe (labris) - a symbol of power in the Thracian society - placed inside a circle. The labris has lots of additional ornamentation on it, Dichev said. The frieze includes the images of snakes, which were the symbol of the king in the Thracian religious beliefs.

This is the first time when such an artifact is found on the territory, where Thracian tribes have lived in the 9-8 BC.

The labris had later become the symbol of the king dynasty of the of the Odris tribes, which is the most powerful state organization in the second half of the first millennium before Christ.
The appearance of this symbol three centuries earlier shows that organizing a state has started on this territory first.

Two years ago archaeologists found similar symbol of royalty on the entrance of a neighboring dolmen. There is no doubt that these two dolmens were the tombs of a mighty clan of rulers and priests, who lived around the end of the 9th to the end of 8th century BC.
